Biotic interactions and sunlight affect persistence of fecal indicator bacteria and microbial source tracking genetic markers in the upper Mississippi river.

The sanitary quality of recreational waters that may be impacted by sewage is assessed by enumerating fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) (Escherichia coli and enterococci); these organisms are found in the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and many other animals, and hence their presence provides no information about the pollution source. Microbial source tracking (MST) methods can discriminate between different pollution sources, providing critical information to water quality managers, but relatively little is known about factors influencing the decay of FIB and MST genetic markers following rel

Genetically modified indigenous Pseudomonas aeruginosa drove bacterial community to change positively toward microbial enhanced oil recovery applications.

AIMS: Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is cost-effective and eco-friendly for oil exploitation. Genetically modified biosurfactants-producing high-yield strains are promising for ex-situ MEOR. However, can they survive and produce biosurfactants in petroleum reservoirs for in-situ MEOR? What is their effect on the native bacterial community? METHODS AND RESULTS: A genetically modified indigenous biosurfactants-producing strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa PrhlAB was bioaugmented in simulated reservoir environments. Pseudomonas aeruginosa PrhlAB could stably colonize in simulated reservoirs. B

Genetically Proxied Associations Among 473 Gut Microbial Taxa, 1,400 Circulating Metabolites, and Mental and Behavioral Disorders: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

Mental and behavioural disorders substantially impair everyday functioning, yet the biological mechanisms through which the gut microbiome may contribute to psychiatric vulnerability remain insufficiently characterized. We jointly analysed genome-wide association study data for 473 gut microbial taxa, approximately 1,400 circulating metabolites, and seven mental and behavioural disorders, including schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, chronic depression, bulimia nervosa, and hypersomnia. Mendelian randomization

The genetic organization and evolution of the broad host range mercury resistance plasmid pSB102 isolated from a microbial population residing in the rhizosphere of alfalfa.

Employing the biparental exogenous plasmid isolation method, conjugative plasmids conferring mercury resistance were isolated from the microbial community of the rhizosphere of field grown alfalfa plants. Five different plasmids were identified, designated pSB101-pSB105. One of the plasmids, pSB102, displayed broad host range (bhr) properties for plasmid replication and transfer unrelated to the known incompatibility (Inc) groups of bhr plasmids IncP-1, IncW, IncN and IncA/C. Nucleotide sequence analysis of plasmid pSB102 revealed a size of 55 578 bp. The transfer region of pSB102 was predicte

Multimodal analysis disentangles the genetic and microbial associations between inflammatory bowel disease and other immune-mediated diseases across a harmonized population framework.

Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID) are chronic conditions with a well-established multifaceted association with the gastrointestinal diseases Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), commonly known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this study, we leverage Danish nationwide pedigree and health data, genome-wide association studies, and fecal microbiota data to characterize the association between IBD and other IMIDs and disentangle genetic and environmental contributions. We show that CD and UC have distinct patterns of correlations with other IMIDs within families. By

Correlations among Antibiotic Resistance Genes, Mobile Genetic Elements and Microbial Communities in Municipal Sewage Treatment Plants Revealed by High-Throughput Sequencing.

Municipal sewage treatment plants (MSTPs) are environmental pools for antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which is cause for growing environmental-health concerns. In this study, the effects of different wastewater treatment processes on microbial antibiotic resistance in four MSTPs were investigated. PCR, q-PCR, and molecular cloning integrally indicated that the tetracycline resistance (tet) genes significantly reduced after activated-sludge treatment. Illumina high-throughput sequencing revealed that the broad-spectrum profile of ARGs and mobile eleme

Metagenomic analysis of microbial communities and associated resistance genes, virulence genes, and mobile genetic elements in natural honey from Mu Cang Chai, Vietnam.

Natural honey is preferred over honey from farmed bees in Vietnam, often commanding higher prices; therefore, it needs proper guidance. Environmental DNA from natural honey can be used to monitor its safety and authenticate its quality, as it contains DNA traces from various organisms. In this study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing was employed to identify risk factors in three natural honey samples from Mu Cang Chai, one of the central honey-producing regions in Northwest Vietnam. Our data revealed that more than 95% of the identified DNA belonged to bacteria in all three samples. Some opportu

Associations of solute carrier family 23 member 1 (SLC23A1) rs6596473 genetic variant with serum vitamin C status and gut microbial profiles in healthy adults: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Solute carrier family 23 member 1 (SLC23A1) encodes sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter 1, which mediates intestinal vitamin C absorption. Although SLC23A1 variants are associated with vitamin C bioavailability, their relationship with gut microbiome remains unexplored. We aimed to investigate the associations of SLC23A1 polymorphism with serum vitamin C status and gut microbial profiles in healthy Korean adults. METHODS: We genotyped the SLC23A1 rs6596473 polymorphism in 257 healthy individuals (20-39 years) and measured their serum vitamin C concentrations, which were

Joint contributions of the gut microbiota and host genetics to feed efficiency in chickens.

BACKGROUND: Feed contributes most to livestock production costs. Improving feed efficiency is crucial to increase profitability and sustainability for animal production. Host genetics and the gut microbiota can both influence the host phenotype. However, the association between the gut microbiota and host genetics and their joint contribution to feed efficiency in chickens is largely unclear. RESULTS: Here, we examined microbial data from the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and feces in 206 chickens and their host genotypes and confirmed that the microbial phenotypes and co-occurrence networ

Monitoring drug Efficacy through Multi-Omics Research initiative in Alzheimer's Disease (MEMORI-AD): A protocol for a multisite exploratory prospective cohort study on the drug response-related clinical, genetic, microbial and metabolomic signatures in Filipino patients with Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is one of the leading causes of disability among older people aged 60 years and above, with majority eventually being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Pharmacological agents approved for dementia include acetylcholinesterase enzyme (AChE) inhibitors like rivastigmine, donepezil and galantamine and the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist memantine, prescribed as monotherapy or in combination with each other, depending on the severity of disease. There is currently no available study demonstrating the clinical response to these drugs for AD in the Filip

Gut microbiome maturation in early childhood interacts with host genetics to predict type 1 diabetes risk.

Prospective evidence linking early-life microbiome development and host genetics with type 1 diabetes (T1D) risk is limited. Here, we describe how gut microbiome maturation and host genetics influence T1D risk in the TEDDY study. We analysed 12,151 longitudinal metagenomes and host genetic data from 887 children at high genetic risk for T1D followed for up to 6 years. We identify three microbiome maturational patterns: Early Matured, Late Matured and Early Plateaued, driven primarily by non-linear changes in species from the Bifidobacterium and Ruminococcus genera. The Early Matured pattern is

Host genetic and gut microbiota interactions regulating intramuscular fat deposition in livestock: mechanistic insights and implications for meat quality.

Intramuscular fat (IMF) is a major determinant of meat quality, influencing tenderness, juiciness, flavor, oxidative stability, and nutritional value in livestock products. Increasing evidence indicates that IMF deposition is regulated by complex interactions between host genetics and gut microbial metabolism. This review summarizes current advances in the molecular and metabolic mechanisms linking host genetics and gut microbiota to IMF accumulation and meat quality traits. At the host level, IMF deposition is regulated by coordinated adipogenic networks involving PPARγ-C/EBPα signaling, lipo
