In human medicine, squamomelanocytic tumour is a malignant cutaneous neoplasm composed of closely intermingled neoplastic squamous cells and melanocytes. A multinodular gingival tumour in a 16-year-old, mixed breed neutered female dog was examined microscopically. Two populations of neoplastic cells, melanocytic and squamous epithelial cells were intermingled. The melanocytic cells were melan-A positive and cytokeratin AE1-AE3 negative and the squamous component was cytokeratin AE1-AE3 positive and melan-A negative. Bovine papillomavirus was not identified by immunohistochemistry or polymerase

Clear-cell ameloblastoma (clear-cell odontogenic carcinoma) is an uncommon odontogenic epithelial neoplasm. We report a case of a well-circumscribed 2 cm radiolucent lesion of the anterior mandible in a 30-year-old woman; this tumor was curetted. The first recurrence (at 5-year follow-up) was treated by aggressive curettage, and in the second recurrence a block resection was performed. However, 2 years after the resection was performed, the tumor recurred for a third time as an extraosseous gingival tumor, and 6 months later a recurrence was noted involving only alveolar mucosa.

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) in the head and neck region are malignant lymphoid neoplasms that usually originate from B-lymphocytic cell lines. Primary extranodal manifestations of this hematolymphoid tumor in the oral cavity are rare and involve the maxillary jaw including the palatal soft tissues, the mandible, and gingival tissues in patients between 60 and 70 years of age without sex predilection. This case report of an extra-nodal NHL in the palate of a 75-year-old patient emphasizes the importance of accurate clinical, radiographic, and histologic diagnostic procedures to avoid delayed d

This is a unique case report of a 67-year-old female diagnosed with multiple myeloma and extensive use of intravenous bisphosphonate, whose clinical and radiographic presentation of an oral lesion made it challenging to confirm its definitive diagnosis. This patient was referred to the dental service for a suspected medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Clinically, the lesion was located underneath a fixed partial denture in the left posterior mandible. There was a purulent swelling on the lingual side of the fixed partial denture, and a hyperplastic exophytic lesion on the bucc

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most frequently encountered neoplasm in the oral cavity, which accounts for more than 90% of all cancers. Except for carcinoma of the lip vermilion, the most common sites of oral SCC are the tongue and floor of mouth, followed at a lower frequency by the soft palate, gingiva, and buccal mucosa. Clinically, it may be misdiagnosed because of its variable appearances. This case report presents a case of well-differentiated SCC of gingiva. A 48-year-old male patient reported to the Department of Periodontology, School of Dental Sciences, Karad, with a 1-ye

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma is a benign, locally aggressive neoplasm of proliferating odontogenic epithelial origin. It is seen among old patients from 17 to 72 years with an average age 42 years and without predilection of sex. We report the case of a 7 year old child, having presented since the 5 years age, a gingival tumefaction on the left higher incisivo-canin group which increased volume gradually. The stomatologic examination showed a gingival tumefaction covered with a healthy mucous membrane, ovoid form and measuring 3 cm on its horizontal axis. The tomodensitometry of the jawbone show

Clinical cases in mineral and bone metabolism : the official journal of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism, and Skeletal Diseases2012eng
Osteoporosis is a systemic disease in which the skeletal condition is characterized by a decreased mass of normally mineralized bone, due to an augmentation of bone resorption processes. Bone biomarkers serum are used for the diagnosis. On the other hand the main cause of the resorption in the bone jaws are periodontitis, inflammatory cysts, developmental cysts, odontogenic neoplasms. Periodontal diseases can be localized to a single site of the jaws or can affect all the teeth, with a massive bone resorption. The cysts are classified in developmental and inflammatory. They caused a local bone

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) may involve gingival mucosa (granuloma gravidarum) in pregnancy but rarely involves the airway. This case report is perhaps the only reported presentation of PG in the larynx causing hemoptysis at a late stage of pregnancy. On laryngoscopic exam, a vascular, right false vocal fold neoplasm was identified with pathological characteristics consistent with PG. Conclusions: Pyogenic granuloma is a relatively common tumor of pregnancy but rarely involves the larynx. In the case of airway involvement during pregnancy, it is best managed in coordination with the high-risk obst

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a malignant neoplasm of myeloid series defined by the presence of immature blast cells (>30%) in peripheral circulation. Oral manifestations are the potential indicators of systemic health and disease. Oral cavity is the frequently and early involved sites in AML. Gingival overgrowth due to leukemia is one such condition encountered by periodontists. Hence, understanding, identifying, and correlating oral manifestations with systemic diseases are the ultimate responsibility of every dental clinician because of its lethal and unpredictable course. In the present

A case of gingival metastasis of adenocarcinoma of the colon is reported, the lesion being an early clinical indication of a primary malignant tumor. The diagnosis of metastatic lesion in the oral region is always challenging, both to clinician and to the pathologist, due to its rarity and complexity. In the present case, the clinical hypothesis was peripheral ossifying fibroma or pyogenic granuloma. Histologically, the biopsy tissue revealed a malignant neoplasm not connected to the mucosal surface. Immunohistochemically, the lesion was positive for 35ßH11 and cytokeratin 20 and focally posit

Oral manifestations in HIV infected individuals are common and may occur as mycotic, bacterial or viral infections neoplasms or manifestations of unknown etiology. Some of the oral manifestations may be of importance in early diagnosis of HIV infection. In particular, oral candidiasis occurring as pseudomembranous, erythematous and hyperplastic types should be considered. Oral hairy leukoplakia, pathognomonic for an HIV infection, has been considered to represent a probable diagnostic marker for the development of AIDS. HIV gingivitis and periodontitis are of particular significance. Early and

BACKGROUND: Gingiva that is prone to inflammation may serve as a pre-metastatic niche for the attraction of circulating malignant cells. The aim of this study is to analyze cases of metastatic lesions to the gingiva compared with cases metastasizing to other oral mucosal sites. The pathogenesis of gingival metastases is discussed, with emphasis on the role of inflammation.
METHODS: The English-language literature between 1916 and 2011 was searched for cases of metastatic lesions to the oral mucosa; only cases metastasizing in the oral mucosa, gingiva, and periodontium were included.
RESULTS:

INTRODUCTION: Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare vascular neoplasm that exhibits the potential for recurrence and metastasis but rarely involves the oral cavity.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the management and long term follow up of recurrent EHE in a 23- year-old woman. The lesion initially presented as a small area of erythematous gingival swelling with localised bone loss around the lower anterior teeth. It was treated by buccal and lingual stripping of the gingival tissues. The patient suffered local recurrence after 7 years and was treated with a wider surgical excision

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the gingiva are uncommon. They can be a diagnostic challenge clinically because of their rarity and tendency to mimic benign lesions. In this report, we present a case of an undifferentiated malignant neoplasm of unknown origin presenting as benign inflammatory gingival lesions and we review the literature on metastases to the gingiva.
METHODS: A 44-year-old female patient was referred by a local periodontist for evaluation of multiple painless gingival lesions that clinically resembled pyogenic granulomas or periodontal abscesses, but with an uncharacteristic multif

Plasma cell granuloma is a rare reactive lesion composed of polyclonal plasma cells. It manifests primarily in the lungs, but may occur in various other anatomic locations like the oral cavity. Intraoral plasma cell granulomas involving the tongue, lip, oral mucosa and gingiva have been reported in the past. This case presents a 54-year-old female with chronic periodontitis and mandibular anterior gingival overgrowth treated by Phase I therapy (scaling and root planing) and excisional biopsy. Histological examination revealed inflammatory cell infiltrate containing sheets of plasma cells. Immu

This report describes the occurrence of plasma cell neoplasia in three young HIV-positive males. Two patients presented with massive ascites. On cytologic examination of the fluid, many immature plasma cells were noted. Genotyping of fluid demonstrated clonal rearrangement of immunoglobulin heavy and kappa light chain genes in both cases. Postmortem examination on one of these revealed neoplastic plasmacellular infiltrate in various organs, including the bone marrow. The third case presented with a hemorrhagic, rapidly enlarging gingival mass with a histologic appearance of an undifferentiated

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the highly invasive malignancies globally, accounting for the vast majority of all oral cancers, that is, more than 90%. Carcinomas of the gingiva represent a distinct subgroup of OSCC, constituting approximately 12% of all OSCC cases. These neoplasms might mimic the inflammatory and reactive state of the periodontium, often leading to a delay in diagnosis and hence, poorer prognosis. A case of gingival squamous cell carcinoma in a 48-year-old female patient has been reported here, in which the patient had no risk factors for the development of thi

INTRODUCTION: Angiofibromas are benign fibrovascular neoplasms that rarely involve the oral cavity.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old female presented with a painless swelling on the buccal gingiva adjacent to the right maxillary second molar. Examination revealed a solitary, sessile, oval mass measuring 1.5 cm × 1.2 cm × 1.0 cm. The lesion was excised under local anesthesia. Histopathology confirmed an angiofibroma, showing non-keratinized hyperplastic epithelium overlying a fibrous stroma containing numerous newly formed capillaries. Healing was uneventful, with no recurrence at 1 year.
