BACKGROUND: As bacterial infections pose a major health risk to captive populations, disease prevention and management play a crucial role in the ex situ conservation of giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis). This study describes the case of a giraffe that developed septicemia after an umbilical cord infection caused by Escherichia coli. To our knowledge, pathological changes in diseased giraffes caused by E. coli, which is an opportunistic pathogenic organism, have not been reported. This is the first report presenting an analysis of necropsies and subsequent microbiological investigations.

We report the first isolation of Acinetobacter kookii from a Rothschild's giraffe calf (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) that had severe polyarthritis. It is well known that vitamin E and selenium deficiencies in domestic ruminants can lead to white muscle disease. For a large herd of reticulated giraffes, a mainly operant-based training program was created for front foot radiographs and hoof trims in an effort to diagnose and better manage lameness. Behaviors were shaped in a restricted contact set-up, using a positive reinforcement procedure to teach a series of mastered cued behaviors. Giraffes are one of the most commonly housed megafauna in zoos. Variation across zoos (e.g., geographic location, housing, and husbandry), may be expected to influence giraffe behavior. However, past studies have typically focused on a small number of zoos, limiting generalizable conclusions. This study reports the first successful vasectomy on a southern African male giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa). The goal of the procedure was to create a teaser male for reproductive studies.
