LiquidGAN for Handwriting-Based Detection and Severity Classification of Extrapyramidal Symptoms.

Extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) are motor side effects commonly induced by antipsychotic medications and can lead to measurable changes in handwriting patterns. These symptoms affect both the spatial and temporal characteristics of writing, including stroke thickness, direction and the rate of directional change. To model these complex variations, we propose a novel Liquid Generative Adversarial Network (LiquidGAN), which combines the adaptive dynamics of liquid neural networks with the data generation capability of GANs. Handwriting data were collected from 94 patients with confirmed EPS and 30

Teaching and Rehabilitation of Handwriting for Children in the Digital Age: Issues and Challenges.

Handwriting is a determining factor for academic success and autonomy for all children. Making knowledge accessible to all is a challenge in the context of inclusive education. Given the neurodevelopmental diversity within a classroom of children, ensuring that the handwriting of all pupils progresses is very demanding for education professionals. The development of tools that can take into account the variability of the profiles and learning abilities of children with handwriting difficulties offers a new potential for the development of specific and adapted remediation strategies. This narra

A study of auxiliary screening for Alzheimer's disease based on handwriting characteristics.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) has an insidious onset, the early stages are easily overlooked, and there are no reliable, rapid, and inexpensive ancillary detection methods. This study analyzes the differences in handwriting kinematic characteristics between AD patients and normal elderly people to model handwriting characteristics. The aim is to investigate whether handwriting analysis has a promising future in AD auxiliary screening or even auxiliary diagnosis and to provide a basis for developing a handwriting-based diagnostic tool. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four A

The brain basis of handwriting deficits in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia.

Abundant behavioral studies have demonstrated high comorbidity of reading and handwriting difficulties in developmental dyslexia (DD), a neurological condition characterized by unexpectedly low reading ability despite adequate nonverbal intelligence and typical schooling. The neural correlates of handwriting deficits remain largely unknown; however, as well as the extent that handwriting deficits share common neural bases with reading deficits in DD. The present work used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine brain activity during handwriting and reading tasks in Chinese dyslexic ch

Health at the writing desk of John Ruskin: a study of handwriting and illness.

Though John Ruskin (1819-1900) is remembered principally for his work as a theorist, art critic and historian of visual culture, he wrote exhaustively about his health in his correspondence and diaries. Ruskin was prone to recurring depressive and hypochondriacal feelings in his youth and adulthood. In 1871, at the age of 52 years, he developed an illness with relapsing psychiatric and neurological features. He had a series of attacks of brain disturbance, and a deterioration of his mental faculties affected his writing for years before curtailing his career a decade before he died. Previous w

Understanding handwriting difficulties: A comparison of children with and without motor impairment.

The nature of handwriting difficulties have been explored in children with specific developmental disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of handwriting difficulties in children with dysgraphia, a less studied group who have significant handwriting difficulties in the absence of motor control or cognitive difficulties. The performance of a dysgraphia group aged 8-14 years was compared to a group with Developmental Coordination Disorder and to typically developing (TD) controls. Participants completed two handwriting tasks on a digitizing writing tablet. The amount and ac

Impairment of a parieto-premotor network specialized for handwriting in writer's cramp.

Handwriting with the dominant hand is a highly skilled task singularly acquired in humans. This skill is the isolated deficit in patients with writer's cramp (WC), a form of dystonia with maladaptive plasticity, acquired through intensive and repetitive motor practice. When a skill is highly trained, a motor program is created in the brain to execute the same movement kinematics regardless of the effector used for the task. The task- and effector-specific symptoms in WC suggest that a problem particularly occurs in the brain when the writing motor program is carried out by the dominant hand. I

Handwriting-in-interaction between people with ALS/MND and their conversation partners.

The aim of this study was to examine the use and practices of handwriting-in-interaction by people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease (ALS/MND). Handwriting has previously been described as a viable and practical means of augmentative and alternative communication, particularly for adults with acquired progressive dysarthria and intact upper limb control. To date, however, there is extremely limited evidence documenting how handwriting is used within a conversational context. The analysis in this paper features data from two people with ALS/MND in conversation at home with

Analysis of handwriting of children during treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) often complain about handwriting problems. PROCEDURE: Using a computerized writing task, we have prospectively studied the processes necessary for the production of handwriting movements in 11 children (5-12 years old) during treatment for ALL. Children were tested at time points closely related to the vincristine administration. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Children treated for ALL drew slower, with longer pause durations and increased drawing pressure. Children were able to overcome the problems, except for a consistently incr

The influence of mental and motor load on handwriting movements in parkinsonian patients.

This experiment tested the hypothesis that Parkinson's disease (PD) patients are more vulnerable to a moderate level of secondary task load than elderly or young controls due to heightened variability in the motor system. PD patients, elderly, and young adults performed a handwriting task with different secondary tasks. The secondary task imposed motor load (i.e., speech) and/or a mental load (i.e., ignoring, repeating, or subtracting). The findings showed that, in contrast to young and elderly controls, PD patients tended to increase MT, accumulated pause time, and normalized jerk when the se

Cerebral dominance for speech and handwriting of patients with cortical vascular malformations.

Lateralization of speech dominance was established using amobarbital for 22 patients with vascular malformations lateralized to the left cerebral hemisphere. Patients' histories were negative for clinically evident neurological events (e.g., seizures or hemorrhage) prior to adulthood. The vascular lesions were categorized as high flow arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) (n = 4), low flow AVMs (n = 6), cavernous hemangiomas (n = 10), or venous angiomas (n = 2) by reviewing angiographic findings and surgical pathology for those patients whose lesions were excised. Three of the malformations encro

Handwriting graphical parameters analysis in Posterior Cortical Atrophy: A case report.

Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) is a rare neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by an occipital atrophy resulting in a progressive impairment of upper visual functions. The inconsistency of terminology of this pathology makes its diagnosis difficult and delayed. We present a 76-year-old patient with PCA having difficulties in reading, writing, and daily manipulations. The objective was to evaluate the kinematic writing parameters. Linguistic, cognitive-non-linguistic and non-cognitive-non-linguistic graphical tasks were performed. The kinematic parameters extracted were jerk, velocity and

Handwriting difficulties of children with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A.

Hand weakness and impaired manual dexterity have been reported in children with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A). This early onset of upper limb involvement might explain frequent clinical referrals for assessment and treatment of impaired handwriting performance. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of CMT1A on handwriting speed and legibility, and identify demographic, anthropometric, and physical measures that might relate to handwriting performance. Handwriting speed (Handwriting Speed Test), handwriting legibility (Evaluation Tool of Children's Handwriting-Cursive),

Multimodal fusion of handwriting images and kinematic features for Parkinson disease detection.

Parkinson's disease (PD) affects fine motor control and produces measurable abnormalities in handwriting and drawing. This study proposes a rigorously evaluated multimodal framework for PD detection that combines a Vision Transformer (ViT) for spiral and meander image analysis with an XGBoost classifier operating on 54 carefully engineered kinematic features extracted from multichannel handwriting signals. To assess how multimodal integration should be performed, both intermediate feature-level fusion and late decision-level fusion were evaluated under a strict 5-fold subject-wise cross-valida

Extending the Spectrum of Dysgraphia: A Data Driven Strategy to Estimate Handwriting Quality.

This paper proposes new ways to assess handwriting, a critical skill in any child's school journey. Traditionally, a pen and paper test called the BHK test (Concise Evaluation Scale for Children's Handwriting) is used to assess children's handwriting in French-speaking countries. Any child with a BHK score above a certain threshold is diagnosed as 'dysgraphic', meaning that they are then eligible for financial coverage for therapeutic support. We previously developed a version of the BHK for tablet computers which provides rich data on the dynamics of writing (acceleration, pressure, and so fo

The Effects of Script and Orthographic Complexity on the Handwriting and Spelling Performance of Children With Dyslexia.

Handwriting and spelling problems are often associated in dyslexia. However, the nature of their association is still unclear, and most of the existing research in this area is on deep orthographies (mainly English). The extent to which findings are applicable across languages is uncertain. This article examines the effects of script (manuscript/cursive) and orthographic complexity (complex/simple spellings) on the word dictation and word-copying performance of a group of 24 Italian children with dyslexia and handwriting difficulties (DH group, aged 8-10). Their performance was compared with t
