We present a new antiviral strategy and research tool that could be applied to a wide range of enveloped viruses that infect human beings via membrane fusion. We test this strategy on two emerging zoonotic henipaviruses that cause fatal encephalitis in humans, Nipah (NiV) and Hendra (HeV) viruses. In the new approach, artificial cell-like particles (protocells) presenting membrane receptors in a biomimetic manner were developed and found to attract and inactivate henipavirus envelope glycoprotein pseudovirus particles, preventing infection. The protocells do not accumulate virus during the ina

Nipah virus (NiV) outbreak was declared in Kozhikode district, Kerala state, India, on 12 September 2023. The local, state, and national authorities worked in an integrated way to tackle and control the outbreak. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) deployed a team from the ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, India, along with an indigenously developed and validated Mobile BSL-3 (MBSL-3) laboratory for providing onsite NiV diagnosis. The Kozhikode district of Kerala state was the epicenter of three NiV outbreaks on May 2018, August 2021, and most recently in September 2023. T

Nipah virus (NiV) is a World Health Organization priority pathogen and there are currently no approved drugs for clinical immunotherapy. Through the use of a naïve human phage-displayed Fab library, two neutralizing antibodies (NiV41 and NiV42) targeting the NiV receptor binding protein (RBP) were identified. Following affinity maturation, antibodies derived from NiV41 display cross-reactivity against both NiV and Hendra virus (HeV), whereas the antibody based on NiV42 is only specific to NiV. Results of immunogenetic analysis reveal a correlation between the maturation of antibodies and their

Hendra virus causes acute and highly fatal infection in horses and humans. Pteropid bats (flying-foxes) are the natural host of the virus, with age and species being risk factors for infection. Urine is the primary route of excretion in flying-foxes, with viral RNA more frequently detected in Pteropus alecto and P. conspicillatus than other species. Infection prevalence in flying-foxes can vary between and within years, with a winter peak of excretion occurring in some regions. Vertical transmission and recrudescing infection has been reported in flying-foxes, but horizontal transmission is ev

Nipah virus (NiV) is a recently emerged severe human pathogen that belongs to the Henipavirus genus within the Paramyxoviridae family. The NiV genome is encapsidated by the nucleoprotein (N) within a helical nucleocapsid that is the substrate used by the polymerase for transcription and replication. The polymerase is recruited onto the nucleocapsid via its cofactor, the phosphoprotein (P). The NiV P protein has a modular organization, with alternating disordered and ordered domains. Among these latter, is the P multimerization domain (PMD) that was predicted to adopt a coiled-coil conformation

We provide evidence for natural Hendra virus infections and associated serology in a cohort of Australian black flying foxes (Pteropus alecto) transferred from Queensland to the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness in Victoria, Australia. This study supports the likelihood that flying foxes undergo cycles of infection and reinfection and possibly recrudescence.

Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly lethal zoonotic virus, causing sporadic or local infection outbreaks in south and southeast Asia in recent years. In January 2026, India reported a new round of NiV infection outbreak, indicating that the virus still poses a threat to global public health. Currently, the prevention and control of NiV infection in different countries mainly focus on blocking the transmission from animals and strengthening the control of nosocomial infection. However, as no effective vaccine has been developed yet, the risk for the cross-border transmission still exists. This paper

Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly pathogenic zoonotic paramyxovirus responsible for sporadic outbreaks of severe disease with high case fatality rates in South and Southeast Asia. Human infection occurs through spillover from natural reservoirs, primarily fruit bats, or via human-to-human transmission, and is characterized by a broad clinical spectrum ranging from asymptomatic infection to acute respiratory disease and fatal encephalitis. Following entry via ephrin-B2 and ephrin-B3 receptors, NiV exhibits marked endothelial and neuronal tropism, leading to systemic vasculitis, disruption of the bl

The Malaysian strain of Nipah virus (NiV) first emerged in 1998/99 and caused a major disease outbreak in pigs and humans. While humans developed fatal encephalitis due to a prominent infection of brain microvessels, NiV-infected pigs mostly suffered from an acute respiratory disease and efficiently spread the infection via airway secretions. To elucidate the molecular basis of the highly productive NiV replication in porcine airways in vitro, physiologically relevant cell models that have maintained functional characteristics of airway epithelia in vivo are needed. Here, we describe in detail

The prototype members of the genus Henipavirus, Nipah virus (NiV) and Hendra virus (HeV), cause recurrent zoonotic spillovers with case fatality rates ranging from 40-90% in humans. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or therapeutics for use in humans. Neutralizing antibodies targeting the NiV/HeV F- or G-glycoproteins protect animals from lethal challenge and are a main correlate of protection. However, antibody-based formulations are expensive, typically requiring hospital admission for administration and cold-chain for storage and transportation. To address the lack of shelf-stable cl

Several novel viruses recently described in bats of the genus Pteropus (sub-order Megachiroptera) in Australia and southeast Asia cause encephalitic disease in animals and humans. These viruses include Hendra virus and Nipah virus (genus Henipavirus, family Paramyxoviridae) and Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV; genus Lyssavirus, family Rhabdoviridae). Broadly, strategies for disease prevention and control in the spillover host are directed at minimising direct or indirect contact with the natural host, improving farm-gate and on-farm biosecurity, and better disease recognition and diagnosis. Nipah virus (NiV) is a member of the genus Henipavirus of the family Paramyxoviridae, characterized by high pathogenicity and endemic in South Asia. It is classified as a Biosafety Level-4 (BSL-4) agent. The case-fatality varies from 40% to 70% depending on the severity of the disease and on the availability of adequate healthcare facilities. At present no antiviral drugs are available for NiV disease and the treatment is just supportive. Phylogenetic and evolutionary analyses can be used to help in understanding the epidemiology and the temporal origin of this virus. This review provides an o

Nipah virus is a priority pathogen with high mortality and pandemic potential. Therapies for Nipah virus disease, such as monoclonal antibodies and antivirals, are under development and require clinical trials for evaluation. However, designing such trials is challenging due to the limited understanding of the clinical characteristics, pathogenesis, and current management of Nipah virus disease. In this Review, we gathered essential data from 59 studies reporting 717 Nipah virus disease cases, to inform trial design. Nearly all patients (618 [99%] of 624) had fever. Neurological symptoms inclu

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: Nipah Virus (NiV) belonging to the genus Henipavirus is a biosafety level 4 pathogen with high human to human transmission. Nipah Virus outbreak of 2018 in Kozhikode, Kerala has evoked immense panic and fear in the system. Other viral infections with similar transmission pattern (Ebola, SARS, MERS or COVID 19) also identified with the negative impacts of isolation. This retrospective observational study was planned during November -December 2018 to understand the psychosocial effects among the subjects in Nipah isolation facility. The symptoms of Post-traumatic stre

Nipah virus (NiV), a lethal zoonotic henipavirus, poses a major public health threat. Its nucleoprotein (N) safeguards the genome by forming a nucleocapsid, which, together with the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (L) and phosphoprotein (P), constitutes the ribonucleoprotein complex. Here, we report a 2.96 Å cryo-EM structure of the NiV nucleocapsid co-expressed with L and P. The structure, resolved under C1 symmetry without imposing helical or other symmetry restraints, reveals irregular helical packing and axis bending that likely reflect the physiological nucleocapsid. Detailed analysis define

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic, highly pathogenic, negative-sense RNA virus belonging to the genus Henipavirus (family Paramyxoviridae), causing severe encephalitis and/or acute respiratory illness in humans. Reported outbreaks show case-fatality rates ranging from approximately 40- 90%, influenced by healthcare quality, surveillance capacity, and clinical variability. Fruit bats (Pteropus spp.) serve as the natural reservoir, with transmission to humans occurring directly or through intermediate hosts such as pigs. Multiple outbreaks have confirmed efficient human-to-human spread, especially

The zoonotic infection of the Nipah virus (NiV) has yet again appeared in 2023 in Kerala state, India. The virus, which has a mortality rate ranging from about 40 to 70%, has already infected India five times, the first being in 2001. The current infection is the sixth virus outbreak in the Indian population. In 1998, the first NiV infection was noted in one village in Malaysia. After that, outbreaks from other South and Southeast Asian countries have been reported periodically. It can spread between humans through contact with body fluids. Therefore, it is unlikely to generate a new pandemic.

First reported in August 2022, the Langya virus (LayV) has emerged as a potential global health threat in the post-COVID-19 era. Preliminary reports show that 35 patients near Shandong and Henan, China experienced a febrile acute LayV infection. We conducted this review following the PRISMA protocol to synthesise current knowledge on LayV's characteristics in terms of molecular, clinical, and public health perspectives. This virus belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and carries a non-segmented, single-stranded negative-sense RNA genome. Shrews may be the natural reservoir of the virus. Clini

The genome of the Nipah virus (NiV) encodes a variety of structural proteins linked to a diverse array of symptoms, including fevers, headaches, somnolence, and respiratory impairment. In instances of heightened severity, it can also invade the central nervous system (CNS), resulting in more pronounced problems. This work investigates the effects of NiV on the blood-brain barrier (BBB), the vital physiological layer responsible for safeguarding the CNS by regulating the passage of chemicals into the brain selectively. To achieve this, the researchers (MMJAO, AM and MNMD) searched a variety of

Nipah virus (NiV), a bat-borne paramyxovirus, results in neurological and respiratory diseases with high mortality in humans and animals. Developing vaccines is crucial for fighting these diseases. Previously, only a few studies focused on the fusion (F) protein alone as the immunogen. Numerous NiV strains have been identified, including 2 representative strains from Malaysia (NiV-M) and Bangladesh (NiV-B), which differ significantly from each other. In this study, an F protein sequence with the potential to prevent different NiV strain infections was designed by bioinformatics analysis after
