The relation between pesticides exposure and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has not been clearly identified. Performing a systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and ScienceDirect were searched for studies reporting the risk of MetS following pesticides exposure and their contaminants. We included 12 studies for a total of 6789 participants, in which 1981 (29.1%) had a MetS. Overall exposure to pesticides and their contaminants increased the risk of MetS by 30% (95CI 22%-37%). From various environmental pollutants studied so far, specific effects on the reproductive system of small fish species Poecilia reticulata (guppy) and Oryzias latipes (medaka) were noted in the case of beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (induction of vitellogenesis and hermaphroditism, both indicative of estrogenic activity; 32 micrograms/l) and methyl mercury (impaired spermatogenesis; 1.8 micrograms/l). Pelodera strongyloides is a free-living soil nematode of the order Rhabditida. We report an 18-year-old man with P strongyloides skin infestation. In this case, pruritic follicular papulopustules developed on the buttocks, then the right flank. Skin scrapings revealed many live rhabditiform larvae that were cultured adult worms and hatched ova, identified as P strongyloides . The eruption was treated effectively with topical 1% gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane ointment.
