High-intensity focused ultrasound ablation of the epididymis in a canine model: a potential alternative to vasectomy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a noninvasive technology capable of inducing thermal coagulative necrosis of subsurface structures without injuring intervening tissues. We have previously reported on the feasibility of HIFU vasectomy in a canine model. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of HIFU ablation of the canine epididymis as an alternative to vasectomy. The epididymis may be a better target than the vas deferens because it is larger, more easily positioned in the HIFU focal zone, and more susceptible to occlusive injury at lower energy levels,

In vitro and in vivo brain ablation created by high-intensity focused ultrasound and monitored by MRI.

In this paper, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is investigated for monitoring small and large lesions created by high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in freshly excised lamb brain and in rabbit brain in vivo. A single-element spherically focused transducer of 5 cm diameter, focusing at 10 cm and operating at 1 MHz was used. A prototype MRI-compatible positioning device that is used to navigate the transducer is described. The effects of HIFU were investigated using T1-W and T2-W fast spin echo (FSE) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR). T2-W FSE and FLAIR show better anatomical

Therapy planning and monitoring of tissue ablation by high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) using imaging and simulation.

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) 'cooks' or ablates the target tissue at the focus of the ultrasound beam by thermal and cavitation effects. The HIFU is emerging as a non-invasive method for tumor ablation. The HIFU application for tissue ablation requires tools for dosimetry therapy planning, and real-time feedback of the intended and actual target tissues. Pretreatment planning is an important step for a successful HIFU therapy outcome. Typically, the therapy planning approach involves the use of pretreatment imaging data, defining the target and surrounding tissues by manual or semi
