Sigmoid volvulus: high mortality in county hospital patients.

Between 1970 and 1980, 12 patients were admitted 16 times to San Bernardino County Medical Center for sigmoid volvulus. The seven men and five women averaged 68.5 years old. Sixty-seven per cent recounted histories of neuropsychiatric disorders. Fifty per cent had been institutionalized. Forty-two per cent had endured previous episodes of sigmoid volvulus. Fourteen of 24 nonoperative attempts at reduction were successful but were followed by nine recurrences. Ten of 12 patients eventually underwent surgery. Eight procedures were electively scheduled following spontaneous or nonoperative reduct

Psychiatric comorbidity and in-hospital mortality in patients hospitalized for physical conditions in Germany.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between psychiatric comorbidity and in-hospital mortality in patients hospitalized for physical conditions in Germany. METHODS: This retrospective study used data from the hospital database of IQVIA (Frankfurt, Germany). Adults with a psychiatric disorder as a secondary diagnosis at hospital admission were matched (1:3) to those without a psychiatric disorder using a propensity score based on age, sex, hospital department, and primary diagnosis. Diagnoses of psychiatric and physical disorders relied on the ICD-10 classification. Associations between p

Characteristics and in-hospital mortality of elderly patients with heart failure in Spanish hospitals.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of heart failure (HF) increases with age, and it is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death in older patients. However, there are little data on in-hospital mortality in patients with HF ≥ 75 years in Spain. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set was performed, including all HF episodes discharged from public hospitals in Spain between 2016 and 2019. Coding was performed using the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision. Patients ≥ 75 years with HF as the principal diagnosis were selected. We calculated

Epidemiology of in-hospital mortality in acute patients admitted to a tertiary-level hospital.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals may have difficulty in recognising the dying patient in acute care settings, and yet, this is essential if timely end-of-life care is to be provided. While approximately one-third of patients who pass away in-hospital are reviewed by the rapid response team (RRT), there is limited available research on other factors associated with mortality within the hospital setting. AIMS: To describe the epidemiology of in-hospital mortality within a tertiary-level hospital, particularly in the context of RRT activation. METHODS: We utilised the database extraction of

Vancomycin-sensitive Enterococcus faecium bacteraemia - hospital transmission and mortality in a Danish University Hospital.

Introduction. The emergence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) has left the vancomycin-sensitive E. faecium (VSEfm) strains almost unnoticed.Hypothesis. Molecular characteristics, hospital transmission patterns and clinical impact of VSEfm have changed, and VSEfm is a predictor of VREfm introduction.Aim. We wanted to do a molecular characterization of VSEfm to identify hospital transmissions and links between VSEfm and VREfm, and to investigate the demographics, treatment and impact on mortality of VSEfm bacteraemia.Methodology. VSEfm and VREfm blood culture isolates from Ode

Hospital-based influenza surveillance in Korea: hospital-based influenza morbidity and mortality study group.

Influenza epidemics occur annually with variations in size and severity. Hospital-based Influenza Morbidity & Mortality was established to monitor influenza epidemics and their severity, which is composed of two surveillance systems: emergency room-based and inpatient-based surveillance. Regarding emergency room-based surveillance, influenza-like illness index (influenza-like illness cases per 1,000 emergency room-visiting subjects), number of laboratory-confirmed cases and the distribution of influenza types were estimated weekly. Inpatient-based surveillance included monitoring for hospitali

Hospital staff education on severe sepsis/septic shock and hospital mortality: an original hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Signs of serious clinical events overlap with those of sepsis. We hypothesised that any education on severe sepsis/septic shock may affect the outcome of all hospital patients. We designed this study to assess the trend of the mortality rate of adults admitted to hospital for at least one night in relationship with a hospital staff educational program dedicated to severe sepsis/septic shock. METHODS: This study was performed in six Italian hospitals in the same region. Multidisciplinary Sepsis Teams members were selected by each hospital management among senior staff. The educatio

Perinatal mortality at the Port Moresby General Hospital and St. Therese's Maternity Hospital 1972.

A study was made of the 67 still-births and the 58 neonatal deaths that occurred among the 3,516 viable infants (birth weight 1,000 g. or more) that were born to public patients of the obstetric units of Port Moresby General Hospital and St. Therese's Maternity Hospital during the year 1972. The combined stillbirth and neonatal mortality rate was 35.5 per 1,000 births. The adverse effects of lack of antenatal care, delivery outside hospital, high parity, maternal anaemia, mulitple pregnancy, and low birth weight are demonstrated. Low birth weight (1,000 to 2,200 g.) of unknown cause accounted

[Perinatal mortality at the Hospital Center of Libreville (Gabon)].

A study of the work carried out in the obstetrical department during the years 1985, 1986 and 1987 shows there was a corrected perinatal mortality of 32.61 per 1,000. This involved 776 deaths out of 23,980 births of babies weighing 1,000 g. or more. Research as to the causes showed that the largest reasons for these deaths were maternal and fetal infections (28.9% of the aetiology of perinatal mortality). In 35.1% of cases there was obstetrical trauma leading to intrapartum anoxia and prematurity was responsible for 63.7% of deaths associated with other causes. These figures can be reduced if
