Housing instability and violence among women who use drugs in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Women who use heroin and other drugs (WWUD) are a key population with elevated risk of physical and sexual violence perpetrated by intimate partners and non-partners. While housing instability has been shown to be associated with violence in high-income settings, this is an underexplored topic in sub-Saharan Africa. In this research, we aimed to assess the relationship between housing instability and various forms of violence within a sample of WWUD in Dar es Salaam. METHODS: This analysis uses data from a parent study from 2018. A total of 200 WWUD were recruited through responde

Housing Instability Results in Increased Acute Care Utilization in an Urban HIV Clinic Cohort.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) who experience homelessness and unstable housing (HUH) often have fragmented health care. Research that incorporates granular assessments of housing status and primary care visit adherence to understand patterns of acute care utilization can help pinpoint areas for intervention. METHODS: We collected self-reported living situation, categorized as stable (rent/own, hotel/single room occupancy), unstable (treatment/transitional program, staying with friends), or homeless (homeless shelter, outdoors/in vehicle) at an urban safety-net HIV clinic between F

Housing instability and cardiometabolic health in the United States: a narrative review of the literature.

Housing instability is variably defined but generally encompasses difficulty paying rent, living in poor or overcrowded conditions, moving frequently, or spending the majority of household income on housing costs. While there is strong evidence that people experiencing homelessness (i.e., lack of regular housing) are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes, less is known about housing instability and health. We synthesized evidence from 42 original research studies conducted in the United States examining the association of housing instability and cardiometabolic he

An innovative nurse practitioner-led service for children from families living in housing instability.

AIM: To report on the design and results of an innovative nurse practitioner (NP)-led specialist primary care service for children facing housing instability. BACKGROUND: During 2017-2018, children aged 0-14 years represented 23% of the total population receiving support from specialist homeless services in Australia. The impact of housing instability on Australian children is considerable, resulting in disengagement from social institutions including health and education, and poorer physical and mental health outcomes across the lifespan. Current services fail to adequately address health an

Examining second-stage shelters: insights into housing instability and tailored support for IPV survivors.

BACKGROUND: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) exposes women and children to a wide range of challenges across housing, employment, social connections, and child well-being and is a public health issue. IPV survivors are at heightened risk of housing insecurity and homelessness. Emergency shelters have historically offered respite and support, but the emergence of second-stage shelters provides longer-term solutions. Despite their significance, there has been a lack of comprehensive research on second-stage shelters. This study focuses on understanding the needs of IPV survivors accessing second-

Violence and Emergency Department Use among Community-Recruited Women Who Experience Homelessness and Housing Instability.

Women who experience housing instability are at high risk for violence and have disproportionately high rates of emergency department (ED) use. However, little has been done to characterize the violence they experience, or to understand how it may be related to ED use. We recruited homeless and unstably housed women from San Francisco shelters, free meal programs, and single room occupancy (SRO) hotels. We used generalized estimating equations to examine associations between violence and any ED use (i.e., an ED visit for any stated reason) every 6 months for 3 years. Among 300 participants, 44

Housing Instability Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men in a U.S. National Sample.

Youth experiencing housing instability are among the fastest growing groups of individuals diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The unpredictable nature of the lives of youth experiencing housing instability can lead to inconsistent health care, leaving gaps about the most prominent needs for intervention. We examined factors associated with housing instability in a national sample of 2,228 sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth aged 16-24 who were having sex with men. Behavioral risk factors for STI and reported sex work were associated with housing instability. Social suppo

Enlarged colony housing promotes linear progression of subchondral bone remodeling in joint instability rat models.

Objective: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease with high prevalence and an unmet medical need for disease modifying treatments. In rat models, OA-like subchondral bone and cartilage changes can be induced by instability surgery with different severity levels. Factors which determine structural changes additionally comprise the study duration and activity-impacted joint loading. Methods: A medial meniscal tear (MMT) or anterior cruciate ligament transection with partial meniscectomy (ACLT+pMx) was induced unilaterally in rats housed in a rat colony cage (RCC), allowing high activity levels includi

Developing an operational definition of housing instability and homelessness in Veterans Health Administration's medical records.

The main objective of this study was to examine how homelessness and housing instability is captured across data sources in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Data from 2021 were extracted from three data repositories, including the Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW), the Homeless Operations Management System (HOMES), and the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS). Using these three data sources, we identified the number of homeless and unstably housed veterans across a variety of indicators. The results showed that the use of diagnostic codes and clinic stop codes identified a large
