Potential of biogenic hydrogen production for hydrogen driven remediation strategies in marine environments.

Fermentative production of bio-hydrogen (bio-H2) from organic residues has emerged as a promising alternative for providing the required electron source for hydrogen driven remediation strategies. Unlike the widely used production of H2 by bacteria in fresh water systems, few reports are available regarding the generation of biogenic H2 and optimisation processes in marine systems. The present research aims to optimise the capability of an indigenous marine bacterium for the production of bio-H2 in marine environments and subsequently develop this process for hydrogen driven remediation strate

Hydrogen gas and olfactory dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease: the Hydrogen-Olfactory-Limbic hypothesis.

Olfactory dysfunction is increasingly recognized as an early clinical feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), often preceding measurable cognitive impairment and associated with subsequent cognitive decline. Despite this relatively consistent clinical association, the anatomical, cellular, and physiological substrates underlying olfactory dysfunction in AD remain poorly understood. Post-mortem human studies have identified amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau pathology in olfactory structures, including the olfactory epithelium and anterior olfactory nucleus. However, the available anatomical evidence remains

Recent progress in rhombohedral boron monosulfide and hydrogen boride for hydrogen-related applications.

Hydrogen is a promising energy vector with the potential to become the cornerstone of sustainable energy systems with the support of green production, storage, and utilization technologies. Among the materials explored to advance the hydrogen ecosystem, two-dimensional (2D) boron-based materials have garnered considerable research interest because of their exceptional physicochemical properties, including tunable electronic properties and remarkable chemical stability. While extensive literature on pristine 2D boron nanosheets (borophene) and its hydrogen-related applications exists, comparati

Minimum-Regret Hydrogen and Carbon Supply Chains to Decarbonize European Industrial Hydrogen Demands.

Low-carbon hydrogen (H2) is envisioned to play a central role in decarbonizing European hard-to-abate industries, such as refineries, ammonia, methanol, steel, and cement. To facilitate its widespread use, low-carbon H2 supply chain (HSC) infrastructure is needed. However, uncertainties around future low-carbon H2 demands and biomass availability hamper their proliferation. This work investigates the impact of uncertainties in H2 demand and biomass availability on the optimal HSC design. A linear optimization model is used to determine the cost-optimal HSC design, considering a regional spatia

Hydrogen sulfide and the liver.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gasotransmitter that regulates numerous physiological and pathophysiological processes in our body. Enzymatic production of H2S is catalyzed by cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (MST). All these three enzymes present in the liver and via H2S production regulate liver functions. The liver is the hub for metabolism of glucose and lipids, and maintains the level of circulatory lipids through lipoprotein metabolism. Hepatic H2S metabolism affects glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, lipoprotein synt

Hydrogen Sulfide and the Kidney.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is constitutively synthesized in the kidney. Recent investigations suggest a role for H2S in the regulation of fundamental kidney physiological events including arterial blood flow, glomerular filtration, and electrolyte and water transport. Deficiency of H2S generation has been implicated in acute kidney injury brought on by ischemia, administration of nephrotoxic medications, and obstruction. A role for impaired H2S expression has been shown in chronic kidney injury seen with chronic heart failure, obesity, and diabetes. Deficient H2S generation by the kidney could con

[Hydrogen peroxide in the troposphere].

The past few decades saw a rising interest in the role of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in atmospheric chemistry and its contribution to the formation of free radicals. Free radicals (oxidants) are formed by photochemical reactions between ozone and H2O2. Free radicals formed within cells can oxidise biomolecules, and this may lead to cell death and tissue injury. For this reason, free radicals are believed to cause more than 100 diseases. H2O2 has been suggested as a better indicator of atmospheric oxidation capacity than ozone. Atmospheric H2O2 can appear in the gas phase or in the aqueous phase.

Hypersensitivity to hydrogenated lanolin.

The number of patients with dermatitis from applied betamethasone-17-valerate ointment, which incorporated hydrogenated lanolin, rapidly increased in Japan after 1971. On patch testing, the incidence of hypersensitivity to hydrogenated lanolin is significantly higher than to anhydrous lanolin at the 1% level, that is 5.20% (26/502) with the former and 1.99% (10/502) with the latter, although sensitivity to both materials is significantly related at the 0.5% level. The possible explanations considered are that hydrogenated lanolin contains three main allergens: the first is a group of lanolin a

Fe-catalysed chemoselective hydrogenation of maleimides to succinimides using water as the hydrogen source.

Herein, we demonstrated the first iron-catalysed chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of maleimides to succinimides using water as the hydrogen source and zinc as the reductant. A series of functionalized succinimides were obtained in excellent yield (41 examples, up to 95% yield). Preliminary mechanistic and deuterium-labelling studies including kinetic experiments were performed to establish the chemoselective hydrogenation.

Hydrogen Aggregation Enhances CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol Over In2O3-Based Catalysts.

The hydrogen (H) spillover on the catalyst surface is crucial in the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, but its effects on product selectivity have been rarely investigated. Herein, we reveal the H-spillover mediated regulatory role of oxide supports, which changed the CO2 hydrogenation selectivity on In2O3-based catalysts. By replacing the supports from TiO2 to ZrO2, the primary product of CO2 hydrogenation experiences a significant shift from carbon monoxide (95.6%) to methanol (84.2%). In situ characterization and theoretical modeling evidence that the degree of H-spillover influences the distribu

Decatungstate-photocatalyzed transfer hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds using alcohol as the hydrogen source.

We present a simple and efficient photocatalytic method for the transfer hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds using alcohol as the hydrogen source and low-cost decatungstate as the photocatalyst. Our approach operates under mild and ambient conditions and demonstrates broad substrate compatibility, including alkyl, aryl, and heteroatom-substituted alkenes, alkynes, azo compounds and nitroarenes. To our knowledge, this study represents the first instance of using tungsten-based catalysts for the photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds. Notably, the catalytic system, emp

Polyethylene as a Hydrogen Source for C─O Bond Cleavage Via Transfer Hydrogenation.

Hydrogenation is widely used in the synthesis of industrial chemicals, yet its reliance on pressurized H2 poses safety risks and contributes to carbon emissions. Transfer hydrogenation offers an attractive alternative, but it remains constrained by the high cost of typical hydrogen donors. Polyethylene (PE), a major contributor to persistent plastic wastes, is a hydrogen-rich polymer capable of releasing hydrogen during catalytic deconstruction. Here, we propose the use of PE as an inexpensive hydrogen donor for the selective transfer hydrogenation of C─O bonds. We evaluate the transfer hydrog

Hydrogenation of Formate Species Using Atomic Hydrogen on a Cu(111) Model Catalyst.

The reaction mechanism of the CH3OH synthesis by the hydrogenation of CO2 on Cu catalysts is unclear because of the challenge in experimentally detecting reaction intermediates formed by the hydrogenation of adsorbed formate (HCOOa). Thus, the objective of this study is to clarify the reaction mechanism of the CH3OH synthesis by establishing the kinetic natures of intermediates formed by the hydrogenation of adsorbed HCOOa on Cu(111). We exposed HCOOa on Cu(111) to atomic hydrogen at low temperatures of 200-250 K and observed the species using infrared reflection absorption (IRA) spectroscopy

Effects of pressure and temperature on the reactions of horseradish peroxidase with hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen peroxide.

Reactions of ferric horseradish peroxidase with hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen peroxide were studied as a function of pressure. Activation volumes are small and differ in sign (delta V = 1.7 +/- 0.5 ml/mol for peroxidase + HCN and -1.5 +/- 0.5 ml/mol for peroxidase + H2O2). The temperature dependence of cyanide binding to horseradish peroxidase was also determined. A comparison is made of relevant parameters for cyanide binding and compound I formation.

Band-Gap Engineering of Isoreticular Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks for Boosting Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

The rational modulation of band structures in organic semiconductors is central to advancing photocatalytic performance but remains challenging for hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) due to their structural sensitivity to the modification of organic building units (OBUs). Here, based on the stable mesoporous framework HOF-102, π-conjugation-extended and donor-acceptor-tuned OBUs were predesigned by substituting the steric naphthalene units with benzene-vinyl derivatives bearing ─H, ─CH3, or ─CN groups. Through a shape-fitted π─π stacking strategy, three mesoporous HOFs isoreticular with

Hydrogen Release From Silicon─Hydrogen Systems: From Surface Chemistry to Higher-Coordinate Molecular Mechanisms.

Hydrogen release from silicon-hydrogen systems spans a field ranging from extended silicon materials to discrete molecular compounds. Across these regimes, Si─H activation and H2 evolution arise from the interplay of structure, coordination environment, and access to reactive geometries. In extended silicon systems, hydrogen release is governed by structure-dependent recombinative desorption processes. Zintl phases bridge solid-state and molecular silicon chemistry by enabling transfer of polyanionic silicon units into solution, thereby providing access to discrete Si─H reactivity. In molecula

Hydrogen sulfide induced by hydrogen peroxide mediates brassinosteroid-induced stomatal closure of Arabidopsis thaliana.

The role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and its relationship with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in brassinosteroid-induced stomatal closure in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. were investigated. In the present study, 2,4-epibrassinolide (EBR, a bioactive BR) induced stomatal closure in the wild type, the effects were inhibited by H2S scavenger and synthesis inhibitors, and H2O2 scavengers and synthesis inhibitor. However, EBR failed to close the stomata of mutants Atl-cdes, Atd-cdes, AtrbohF and AtrbohD/F. Additionally, EBR induced increase of L-/D-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-/D-CDes) activity, H2S produc

Hydrogen peroxide is involved in hydrogen sulfide-induced lateral root formation in tomato seedlings.

BACKGROUND: Both hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are separately regarded as a highly reactive molecule involved in root morphogenesis. In this report, corresponding causal link governing lateral root formation was investigated. METHODS: By using pharmacological, anatomic, and molecular approaches, evidence presented here revealed the molecular mechanism underlying tomato lateral root development triggered by H2S. RESULTS: A H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) triggered the accumulation of H2O2, the up-regulation of RBOH1 transcript, and thereafter tomato lateral root for
