Quality of life and mental health of adolescents and adults with Silver-Russell syndrome.

Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare imprinting disorder characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth retardation. Despite normal intellectual functioning, psychosocial and behavioral difficulties have been observed in this syndrome. However, few studies have dealt with these aspects, even though this could enhance the current understanding of the SRS and, more importantly, improve the management of potential psychosocial problems. Given the sparse literature, this cross-sectional study aimed to establish the psychosocial and behavioral profile of individuals with SRS. To this end, we ass

Exposure to mother's pregnancy and lactation in infancy is associated with sexual attraction to pregnancy and lactation in adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Several theories, including psychodynamic theories, sexual imprinting and early conditioning have been formulated to explain sexual development. Empirical data, however, remain insufficient for a thorough evaluation of these theories. AIM: In this study, we test the hypothesis that a critical period exists for the acquisition of sexual preferences, as suggested by empirical findings in birds and mammals (sexual imprinting). METHODS: An Internet questionnaire was used. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We gather data from individuals with a sexual preference for pregnant and/or lactating

Imprinting modulates processing of visual information in the visual wulst of chicks.

BACKGROUND: Imprinting behavior is one form of learning and memory in precocial birds. With the aim of elucidating of the neural basis for visual imprinting, we focused on visual information processing. RESULTS: A lesion in the visual wulst, which is similar functionally to the mammalian visual cortex, caused anterograde amnesia in visual imprinting behavior. Since the color of an object was one of the important cues for imprinting, we investigated color information processing in the visual wulst. Intrinsic optical signals from the visual wulst were detected in the early posthatch period and

Primary femininity.

In Freud's theory of the origins of femininity in females, there is a stage unaccounted for in the chronology of the little girl's development: the first many months of life are not considered. We know by now that castration anxiety, penis envy, and the traumas and frustrations of oedipal conflict are easy to demonstrate; but if the first stage in female development is different from Freud's description-if a fundamental, fixed sense of being rightfully a female is established in earliest childhood-then our psychology of women needs repair. The factors that make up this stage, with examples, ar

Analysis of tetracyclines from milk powder by molecularly imprinted solid-phase dispersion based on a metal-organic framework followed by ultra high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry.

A novel molecularly imprinted polymer that could selectively recognize tetracyclines in milk powder was synthesized using a metal-organic framework as a support material, tetracycline as template molecule, and 3-aminophenylboronic acid as a functional monomer and a cross-linking agent. The novel molecularly imprinted polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis, and N2 adsorption/desorption measurements. The adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, adsorption thermodynamics, and select

Sensitive period for sensorimotor integration during vocal motor learning.

Sensory experience during sensitive periods in development may direct the organization of neural substrates, thereby permanently influencing subsequent adult behavior. We report a sensitive period during the imitative motor learning phase of sensorimotor integration in birdsong development. By temporarily and reversibly blocking efference to the vocal muscles, we disrupted vocal motor practice during selected stages of song development. Motor disruption during prolonged periods early in development, which allows recovery of vocal control prior to the onset of adult song, has no effect on adult

A role for self-regulatory control in the absence of ingroup preference.

One of psychology's most ubiquitous findings is that of robust ingroup preference, an explicitly stated human preference for the groups to which we belong. The advent of implicit measures of social cognition introduced a paradoxical result: Compared to members of higher-status groups, members of lower-status groups often show no implicit ingroup preference, sometimes even showing outgroup preference, a result rarely observed on explicit measures. Prevailing theories have provided macro-level accounts, often in terms of system-justifying tendencies, but the various cognitive processes that coul

A four-fold humanity: Margaret Mead and psychological types.

Beginning in 1933, while working in New Guinea, Margaret Mead developed her so-called squares hypothesis. Mead never published its terms, though she made a brief comment on it in her autobiography, Blackberry Winter (1972), and the arguments found in Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (1935) and the research leading to Balinese Character (Bateson & Mead, 1942) bore its imprint. Beginning with William McDougall's distinction between temperament (innate predispositions) and character (learned organization of habit), Mead articulated a morphological approach to the interplay between

Executive functioning in adolescents and adults with Silver-Russell syndrome.

Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare imprinting disorder characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth retardation. The two principal causes of SRS are loss of methylation on chromosome 11p15 (11p15 LOM) and maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7 (UPD(7)mat). Knowledge of the neuropsychological profile of SRS remains sparse and incomplete even if several difficulties related to attention and learning have been reported both in the literature and by patients with SRS. These difficulties could be the result of troubles in different cognitive domains, but also of executive dysfunction. N

Impaired social behavior in chicks exposed to sodium valproate during the last week of embryogenesis.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate direct exposure to sodium valproate (VPA) during embryogenesis, we administered VPA to chick embryos and examined their social behaviors after hatching. METHODS AND RESULTS: Embryos treated with VPA (35 μmol/egg) on day 14 were similar to controls for hatching date (day 21) and hatchlings' abilities, such as motor, imprinting, and surface righting. However, these VPA chicks on posthatching day 3 scored significantly low in the chick's social separation stress (SSS) test as follows. Aggregation test evaluated the speed of four chicks, individually isolated

The inheritance of cognitive skills: does genomic imprinting play a role?

Genomic imprinting refers to the differential expression of a gene based on parental origin. Animal and clinical studies have suggested that genomic imprinting is influential in brain development, with the maternal genome playing a disproportionate role in the development of the cortex. The present study investigated this phenomenon in a nonclinical human population, using intrafamilial correlations. Broadly consistent with predictions, it was found that abilities mediated by frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes, but not occipital lobes, were more closely correlated between children and mothe

Effects of prenatal exposure to antithyroid drugs on imprinting behavior in chicks.

Thyroid hormones play important roles in vertebrate brain development. However, there is little understanding of the direct effects of fetal thyroid dysfunction, i.e., not acquired through the mother, on learning ability. In the present study, we use a chick embryo as a fetal model to investigate the effects of prenatal exposure to antithyroid drugs on imprinting behavior in hatched chicks. Methimazole (MMI) at 20micromol/egg or 5micromol/egg of propylthiouracil (PTU) was administered to eggs on day 14 while the control was given only a vehicle. An imprinting test was conducted after the chick

Afferentation of the lateral nidopallium: A tracing study of a brain area involved in sexual imprinting in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).

The lateral forebrain of zebra finches that comprises parts of the lateral nidopallium and parts of the lateral mesopallium is supposed to be involved in the storage and processing of visual information acquired by an early learning process called sexual imprinting. This information is later used to select an appropriate sexual partner for courtship behavior. Being involved in such a complicated behavioral task, the lateral nidopallium should be an integrative area receiving input from many other regions of the brain. Our experiments indeed show that the lateral nidopallium receives input from

Opiate addiction in adult offspring through possible imprinting after obstetric treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that opiate addiction in adults might stem partly from an imprinting process during birth when certain drugs are given to the mother. DESIGN: Retrospective study by logistic regression of opiate addicts with siblings as controls. SETTING: Stockholm, Sweden. SUBJECTS: 200 Opiate addicts born in Stockholm during 1945-66, comprising 41 identified during interviews of probands for an earlier study; 75 patients whose death from opiate addiction had been confirmed during 1978-88; and 84 accepted for the methadone programme. 262 Siblings (controls) born in Stockho

Mother-to-infant bonding.

The concept of maternal 'bonding', i.e. rapid mother-to-neonate attachment, appears frequently in psychiatric, paediatric and social work discussions of childhood psychopathology and child abuse. 'Bonding' is used as a diagnostic concept, and one which has to bear the weight of important explanatory, descriptive and predictive statements. In turn, it is related aetiologically to post-partum contact and separations of mother and infant. The authors present a critical review of the concept, exploring its empirical basis, and the implications (logical and illogical) that flow from its application

Epigenetics of Chronic Stress: Mechanisms and Health Impacts.

Chronic stress is a major public health concern, contributing to a spectrum of physiological and psychological disorders, including anxiety, depression, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndromes. This review examines the epigenetic mechanisms mediating the impact of chronic stress on human health, focusing on DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs. These epigenetic alterations act as dynamic interfaces between environmental stressors and genomic responses, modifying gene expression in critical stress-related pathways, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)

Developmental emergence of fear learning corresponds with changes in amygdala synaptic plasticity.

Mother-infant attachment is facilitated in altricial rodents through unique neural mechanisms that include impaired neonatal fear conditioning until the time that pups first begin to leave the nest (sensitive period). Here, we confirmed the developmental emergence of odor fear conditioning in neonatal rat pups, and examined synaptic plasticity of inputs to the basolateral amygdala in vitro. Coronal slices through the amygdala were obtained from sensitive (<10 days) and post-sensitive (>10, <19 days) period pups. Field potentials were recorded in the basolateral amygdala in response to stimulat

A multidisciplinary approach and consensus statement to establish standards of care for Angelman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder present in approximately 1/12,000 individuals and characterized by developmental delay, cognitive impairment, motor dysfunction, seizures, gastrointestinal concerns, and abnormal electroencephalographic background. AS is caused by absent expression of the paternally imprinted gene UBE3A in the central nervous system. Disparities in the management of AS are a major problem in preparing for precision therapies and occur even in patients with access to experts and recognized clinics. AS patients receive care based on collective pr
