Adsorption of SO2 and NO from incineration flue gas onto activated carbon fibers.

Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were used to remove SO2 and NO from incineration flue gas. Three types of ACFs in their origin state and after pretreatment with HNO3, NaOH, and KOH were investigated. The removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO were determined experimentally at defined SO2 and NO concentrations and at temperatures of 150, 200 and 260 degrees C. Experimental results indicated that the removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO using the original ACFs were < 56% and < 27%, respectively. All ACFs modified with HNO3, NaOH, and KOH solution could increase the removal efficiencies of SO(2) and NO.

The catalytic incineration of trichloroethylene over a gamma-alumina supported manganese oxide catalyst.

TCE decomposition over a Mn2O3/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst in a fixed bed reactor was conducted in this study. Preliminarily, three catalysts including Mn2O3/gamma-Al2O3, NiO/gamma-Al2O3, and Pt/gamma-Al2O3 were used to incinerate TCE and the results show that the Mn2O3/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst has the best performance. The effects of operating parameters, such as inlet temperature, space velocity, TCE inlet concentration, and oxygen concentration on the catalytic incineration of TCE over the Mn2O3/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst were then performed. The results show that conversion of TCE increases as inlet temper

An overview on characterization, utilization and leachate analysis of biomedical waste incinerator ash.

Solid waste management is one of the major global environmental issues, as there is continuous increase in industrial globalization and generation of waste. Solid wastes encompass the heterogeneous mass of throwaways from the urban community as well as the homogeneous accumulations of agricultural, industrial and mineral wastes. Biomedical waste pose a significant impact on health and environment. A proper waste management system should be required to dispose hazardous biomedical waste and incineration should be the best available technology to reduce the volume of this hazardous waste. The in

Adverse pregnancy outcomes in a population exposed to the emissions of a municipal waste incinerator.

Some contaminants emitted by municipal waste incinerators are believed to adversely affect reproductive health in the exposed populations; yet only limited and conflicting epidemiologic evidence on this issue has been provided so far. In this study we analyzed rates of spontaneous abortion and prevalence at birth of congenital anomalies in women residing or working near the municipal solid waste incinerator of Modena, northern Italy, during the 2003--2006 period and who experienced higher levels of exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, compared to the remaining munic

Effects of inhaled municipal refuse incinerator fly ash in the guinea pig.

Fly ash was collected from two municipal refuse incinerators. It was analyzed for heavy metals, elements, and a wide range of toxic organics. It was resuspended in air for inhalation exposure of guinea pigs. These animals were exposed at high concentrations of each ash 6 h/d for 5 d, and tissues were taken 45 d after the exposure. Following the first exposure and after each daily exposure the ventilatory response of these animals upon challenge with CO2 was found to be depressed. Recovery occurred following exposure. Heavy metals, cadmium, lead, zinc, and mercury were elevated in the lungs of

Impacts of Organomodified Nanoclays and Their Incinerated Byproducts on Bronchial Cell Monolayer Integrity.

Incorporation of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) into nanocomposites using advanced manufacturing strategies is set to revolutionize diverse technologies. Of these, organomodified nanoclays (ONCs; i.e., smectite clays with different organic coatings) act as nanofillers in applications ranging from automotive to aerospace and biomedical systems. Recent toxicological evaluations increased awareness that exposure to ONC can occur along their entire life cycle, namely, during synthesis, handling, use, manipulation, and disposal. Compared to other ENMs, however, little information exists describing

Adverse reproductive outcomes associated with exposure to a municipal solid waste incinerator.

INTRODUCTION: The association between reproductive health outcomes and exposure to municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) is inconclusive. This study investigates the association between exposure to a MSWI and various reproductive outcomes (preterm birth, low birth weight, small for gestational age, and sex ratio), taking into account other sources of pollution (industrial plants, highway, major roads with high traffic flows) and maternal factors, including the socioeconomic status. METHODS: PM10 concentration maps were used for the exposure assessment to the MSWI and to other sources of

Removal and speciation of mercury compounds in flue gas from a waste incinerator.

The management and control of mercury emissions from waste incinerators have become more significant, because waste incinerators are sinks to treat mercury-containing consumer products. This study investigated the effects of mercury concentrations and waste incineration temperatures on mercury speciation using a lab-scale experimental instrument. The removal characteristics of different mercury species were also investigated using an apparatus to simulate the fabric filter with a thin layer of additives such as Ca(OH)2 and NaHCO3, activated carbon (AC), and fly ash. HgCl2 generation rates peak

Use of a non-volatile agent to stabilize severely incinerated dental remains.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify volatile-free products that would be suitable for stabilizing incinerated dental remains at the scene of an incident, and that would not compromise any postmortem examination. METHODS: The anterior mandibles of sheep were incinerated, sprayed unilaterally with stabilizing agents, vibrated for 30 s, and assessed. The effect of the stabilizing solutions on radiographic examination was also recorded. Tests for volatility and the effect on human mandibles were also conducted. RESULTS: A flour/water mixture of one part flour to two parts water, and a

Application of pulsed corona induced plasma chemical process to an industrial incinerator.

Pulsed corona induced plasma chemical process (PPCP) has been investigated for the simultaneous removal of NO(x) (nitrogen oxides) and SO2 (sulfur dioxide) from the flue gas emission. It is one of the world's largest scales of PPCP for treating NO(x) and SO2 simultaneously. A PPCP unit equipped with an average 120 kW modulator has been installed and tested at an industrial incinerator with the gas flow rate of 42 000 m3/h. To improve the removal efficiency of SO2 and NO(x), ammonia (NH3) and propylene (C3H6) were used as chemical additives. It was observed that the pulsed corona induced plasma

Chemometric study on the electrochemical incineration of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid using boron-doped diamond anode.

The electrochemical incineration of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) with boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode had been initially performed under galvanostatic conditions. The main and interaction effects of four operating parameters (flow rate, applied current density, sulfate concentration and initial DTPA concentration) on mineralization performance were investigated. Under similar experimental conditions, Doehlert matrix (DM) and central composite rotatable design (CCRD) were used as statistical multivariate methods in the optimization of the anodic oxidation processes. A comparison be

H2S adsorption by municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash with heavy metals immobilization.

As a byproduct of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plant, fly ash is becoming a challenge for waste management in recent years. In this study, MSWI fly ash (FA) was evaluated for the potential capacity of odorous gas H2S removal. Results showed that fly ash demonstrated longer breakthrough time and higher H2S capacities than coal fly ash and sandy soil, due to its high content of alkali oxides of metals including heavy metals. H2S adsorption capacities of FA1 and FA2 were 15.89 and 12.59 mg H2S/g, respectively for 750 ppm H2S. The adsorption of H2S on fly ash led to formation of eleme

Behavior of TiO₂ nanoparticles during incineration of solid paint waste: a lab-scale test.

In order to assess the potential impacts posed by products containing engineered nanoparticles, it is essential to generate more data about the release of these particles from products' life cycle. Although first studies were performed to investigate the release of nanoparticles from use phase, very few data are available on the potential release from recycling or disposal of nano-enhanced products. In this work, we investigated the behavior of TiO2 nanoparticles from incineration of solid paint waste containing these particles. Solid paint debris with and without TiO2 nanoparticles were treat

Evaluation of cadmium and other metal losses from various municipal wastes during incineration disposal.

The Japanese intake much more Cd through food than people in other countries, this may be partly caused by the activity of municipal waste incineration disposal. The present study was carried out to examine the behavior of Cd and to identify the other lost metals during municipal waste incineration. Thirty-eight waste samples, including food scraps (FS), animal wastes (AW), horticulture wastes (HW) and sewage sludges (SS) were collected from various places in Japan. Treatment temperatures of 500, 850, and 1000 degrees C were conducted to these samples in laboratory, and thirty-nine kinds of me

Formation of polychlorinated dibenzofurans and dioxins during combustion, electrical equipment fires and PCB incineration.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are likely formed by thermal synthesis of a variety of primary precursors. Highest levels of these compounds are expected, however, when the starting material requires only one or two reaction steps for their formation, as is the case with chlorophenols, chlorobenzenes and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Laboratory pyrolyses have indeed shown that PCBs give significant yields of PCDFs, and chlorobenzenes give both PCDFs and PCDDs. In addition, a variety of other chloroaromatic compounds are formed. From these

Performance Research of Ultra-High Performance Concrete Incorporating Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash.

Waste management poses escalating threats to environmental sustainability, particularly with municipal solid waste (MSW) growth. Incineration, a widely adopted method for reducing waste volume, produces millions of tons of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) each year. Despite its high toxicity and classification as a hazardous solid waste, its ultrafine particle size and pozzolanic activity offer potential for its use in construction materials. In this study, MSWIFA was used to replace 6%, 12%, 18% and 24% of cementitious materials, and the effect of MSWIFA substitution rate o

Seasonal variation in nocturnal molecular marker emissions from waste incineration in Seoul, South Korea.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) combustion produces terephthalic acid (TPA), a key indicator of incineration processes. This study examines the diurnal variation of TPA and its association with health risks in Seoul, South Korea, based on data from Bokjeong Station. TPA concentrations were significantly higher in winter (28.12 ng/m3) compared to summer (12.39 ng/m3), indicating increased PET-related emissions during colder months. Similarly, levoglucosan concentrations were markedly higher in winter (68.17 ng/m3) than in summer (16.67 ng/m3), likely due to waste wood incineration. The TPA-to-

The assessment of phosphorus recovery potential in sewage sludge incineration ashes - a case study.

A sewage sludge incineration ash contains large amounts of phosphorus, which are considered as a novel anthropogenic waste-based substitute for phosphorus natural resources. Phosphorus is accumulated at most in phosphate minerals of whitlockite structure, that contain Fe, Ca, and Mg and in the matrix composed of Si, Al, Fe, Ca, P, Mg, K, Na in various proportions. The goal of this study was to estimate phosphorus recovery potential. A four-stage sequential extraction, following the modified Golterman procedure, was applied. Separation of four independent fractions enabled to understand better
