Ligation of the sphenopalatine and posterior nasal arteries is indicated for posterior epistaxis as initial treatment or when conservative measures fail. In some patients, a transnasal approach or its alternative transantral approach are not possible due to tumor filling the nasal corridor, pterygopalatine fossa, or maxillary sinus. Aim of this study was to evaluate feasibility of endoscopically assisted transoral approach for the ligation of the maxillary artery (MA). Six fresh cadaver specimens (12 sides), previously prepared with intravascular injections of colored latex, were dissected. A

INTRODUCTION: Atypical infratemporal fossa infections are rare and potentially fatal.
CASE REPORT: A case of an aspergillosis localized in the infratemporal fossa and another case of tuberculosis of the infratemporal fossa originating from the maxillary sinus, is described. The first patient was immunocompromised and showed symptoms of facial numbness; whereas the other was an immunocompetent man who complained of trigeminal neuralgia type pain. It was difficult to differentiate between infection and tumour despite the utilization of computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging.

Onchocerciasis is a parasitic tropical disease that often presents as multiple, superficial nodules. When it is unique and deeply situated, its clinical diagnosis is difficult. We report a case of a calcified onchocercoma that was localised to the infratemporal fossa.

Hemangiomas in the infratemporal fossa (ITF) are extremely rare benign vascular tumors. For many tumors of the ITF, with the exception of some small hemangiomas, a lateral facial approach has often been required. Recently, however, there have been some reports that minimally invasive endoscopic surgery can be used in the ITF; this would reduce the risk of surgical complications. To date, there has been no report of a hemangioma of the ITF exceeding 6 cm being resected by the endoscopic approach without facial incisions. Here, however, we report two cases of ITF hemangiomas that were completely

The auriculotemporal nerve is a sensory branch extending from the posterior section of the mandibular nerve trunk. Its nerve roots form a short trunk, which gives off a number of branches, innervating: the temporomandibular joint, the temporal region, structures of the external ear: auricle, and external acoustic meatus, and the parotid gland. It also conducts excretory fibres to the buccal and labial glands. Anatomical relationships between the auriculotemporal nerve and the muscles of mastication, temporomandibular joint, and surrounding vessels in the area of the infratemporal fossa create

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The operative management of infratemporal skull base lesions is challenging. Expanded endonasal approaches to this area can decrease surgical morbidity. Access lateral to the natural nasal corridor can be achieved via a middle meatal antrostomy, medial maxillectomy complemented by a septotomy, or anteromedial maxillotomy (i.e., Denker's approach). We sought to compare the access to the infratemporal fossa offered by these endoscopic endonasal approaches.
STUDY DESIGN: Software-enabled CT scan measurements.
METHODS: Axial CT scans obtained with submillimeter cuts throug

Neurofibromas are derived from the nerve sheath and are commonly located in the head and neck region. They usually occur between the ages of 30 and 50 years. Neurofibromas arising from the infratemporal fossa are quite rare, especially in children. We describe a solitary neurofibroma arising from the infratemporal fossa in an 8-year-old boy who presented with a painless mass in his right cheek. Computed tomographic scan showed a soft-density, not well-circumscribed mass located in the right infratemporal fossa. The tumor was resected via the transmandibular approach with an excellent outcome.

INTRODUCTION: The medial portion of the infratemporal fossa (ITF) is not infrequently involved in sinonasal and skull base pathologies. However, endoscopic view of the ITF remains unclear with lack of studies addressing this region from the endoscopic perspective.
METHODS: Using an extended endoscopic approach, the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae were dissected in 10 sides of five adult cadaver heads. A plane of dissection along the pterygoid base and the infratemporal surface of the greater sphenoid wing was developed. High-quality images were produced by coupling the video camera t

The main osseous landmarks of the border area between the infratemporal fossa and the para- and retro pharyngeal space are the sphenoidal spine and the pterygoid and styloid processes, and the styloid vagina. These landmarks, as well as some vascular anomalies, were studied in order to illustrate the variable anatomy, which is encountered in the surgical lateral transzygomatic infratemporal fossa approach. Hundred well-preserved human skull bases were examined. The deep infratemporal fossa was dissected into 54 halves of fixed cadaveric head and neck specimens of both sexes. Dry skull specimen

INTRODUCTION: The infratemporal fossa (ITF) gives passage to most major cerebral vessels and cranial nerves. Dissection of the ITF is essential in many of the lateral cranial base approaches and in exposure of the high cervical internal carotid artery (ICA). We reviewed the surgical anatomy of this region.
METHODS: Direct foraminal measurements were made in seven dry skulls (14 sides), and the relationship of these foramina to each other and various landmarks were determined. Ten ITF dissections were performed using a preauricular subtemporal-infratemporal approach. Preliminary dissections of

The surgical experience with 74 glomus tumors of the temporal bone is presented. The article proposes new refinements in the classification of type C and D tumors and describes in detail the technique of blind sack closure of the external auditory auditory canal, double ligation of the sigmoid sinus and the use of a special infratemporal fossa retractor. The postoperative treatment and intraoperative management of the internal carotid artery, facial nerve and cranial nerves IX, X, XI and XII including the technique and results of a new type of V-VII anastomosis are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Both the endoscopic transnasal Denker's and prelacrimal approaches provide surgical access to the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) and infratemporal fossa (ITF).
OBJECTIVES: This study compares the potential maximum exposure of the PPF and ITF and quantifies the difference in surgical freedom via endoscopic Denker's and prelacrimal approaches.
METHODS: Six cadaveric specimens (12 sides) were dissected using a prelacrimal approach on one side and an endoscopic Denker's approach on the contralateral side. The contents of the PPF and ITF were sequentially exposed. Surgical freedom for ea

Oncogenic osteomalacia is an uncommon syndrome characterized by phosphaturic tumours that produce mineral metabolism abnormalities. Head and neck is the second most frequent location of these tumours. We describe a case of a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour in the infratemporal fossa that caused oncogenic osteomalacia, resolved by means of surgical excision.

OBJECTIVE: Cranial base malignancies involving the infratemporal fossa have been considered unresectable. Advanced operative techniques have made tumor resection feasible in an en bloc fashion with negative histological margins, but there are limited data regarding outcome analysis in patients who have undergone resection of malignant tumors in this area.
METHODS: At Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 25 patients underwent anterolateral cranial base resections for tumors that involved the infratemporal fossa during a 7-year period. The most common tumors were sarcoma (n = 9), squamous ce

Communications between cranial nerves or their branches have been described previously. The exact functional significance of some of these neural communications remains to be fully understood. This paper reports a unique communication between the auriculotemporal and inferior alveolar nerves within the infratemporal fossa. The histological examination indicates an antegrade connection from the inferior alveolar nerve to the auriculotemporal nerve, which could potentially be implicated in referred pain from the anatomical territory of one nerve to the other.

Trigeminal schwannomas are commonly located in the intracranium, and extracranial schwannomas limited to the infratemopral fossa (ITF) are extremely rare. Trigeminal mandibular schwannoma was found in the left ITF of a 48-year-old man who presented with a 1-year history of left facial pain and trismus. The schwannoma was completely removed by a transmandibular transpterygoid approach with no major complications. This case is discussed with a review of the literature on this rare occurrence, focusing on the surgical approach.
