PURPOSE: To report the orbital compression syndrome after orbital extravasation of x-ray contrast material during catheterization of the left middle meningeal artery.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 61-year-old woman had profound loss of vision, pain, and proptosis of her left eye immediately after catheterization of the left middle meningeal artery. Computed tomography (CT) revealed that contrast material had extravasated into the orbit. Her symptoms improved with lateral canthotomy and cantholysis and resolved totally within 24 hours without the need for an orbital surgical procedure to r

In vitro and in vivo precipitation of iodinated contrast agents when ioxaglate and papaverine are given together has been reported. To verify these reports and to investigate other medications not previously tested, the authors analyzed mixtures of contrast agents and medications in vitro with a light spectrophotometer and observed them for visible precipitates for up to 120 minutes. Previously reported incompatibilities between ionic or low-osmolality contrast media and medications were verified, and several new incompatibilities were discovered. No incompatibilities were found when the drugs

The accumulation of diatrizoate and two new low osmolality contrast agents, iopamidol and ioxaglate, was investigated in three experimental tumors (a well differentiated mammary adenocarcinoma, a poorly differentiated colon carcinoma, and a hepatoma) in the rat. All three tumors were implanted into the liver 12 to 14 days prior to intravenous injection of the contrast agents in a dose of 300 mg iodine per kg. Iodine concentrations were determined in blood, liver, and tumors at 1, 5, 10, and 30 minutes using x-ray energy spectrometry. Ratios between tumor iodine and blood iodine concentrations

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether an adverse interaction exists between radiographic contrast agents and thrombolytic drugs.
BACKGROUND: Coronary thrombosis may occur in the setting of unstable angina and after coronary angioplasty. However, the use of thrombolytic drugs in the setting of unstable angina has not been beneficial and, in one large trial of angioplasty in patients with unstable angina, was associated with an increased incidence of ischemic complications and abrupt closure. The reasons for these results are not clear. Coronary arteriography was perfor

AIMS: Current data concerning the influence of X-ray contrast media on the incidence of thrombotic complications in interventional cardiology are controversial. The effect of ionic contrast media on acute (< or =72 h) and subacute (< or =30 days) stent thrombosis has not been investigated.
METHODS: Three thousand, nine hundred and ninety consecutive patients underwent coronary stent placement. Group I (n=1808) received non-ionic contrast media while group II (n=2182) was given the ionic Ioxaglate. All patients were treated with a standard regimen of aspirin and ticlopidine for 4 weeks post in

334 electrocardiographic recordings obtained from 109 patient who underwent cerebral angiography with low osmolality contrast media (CM) were analysed. CM used in this study included meglumine sodium ioxaglate, iopamidol, and iohexol. A tachycardial effect greater than 10% was seen in 8.3% of recordings, while a bradycardial effect greater than 10% was seen in 11.1%. Assessment was based on the type of CM used, age of the patients, usage of atropine sulfate as premedication, and the vessel injected. Patients who were under 19 years of age, and unpremedicated had a significantly higher incidenc

OBJECTIVE: Contrast medium-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a well-known complication of coronary angiographic procedures, especially in patients treated with primary angioplasty. To prevent CIN, we examined using a local application of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) for the prevention of CIN during primary angioplasty. We hypothesized that a local application of NAC into the renal arteries would provide the benefit of a higher local concentration, lower first-pass metabolism, and faster efficacy. To evaluate the effects of NAC by the intrarenal route, we performed a prospective, randomized clinical study

Contrast media are used as substances for visualization of vascular system. But, their administration is often associated with thromboembolic complications. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the thrombogenic action of ionic and non-ionic contrast media on thrombus formation. The experimental destruction of endothelial cells by Laser injury leads to thrombus and emboli formation. Two ionic and two non-ionic contrast media were injected intravenously via penis vein and tested at various dosages (1.0 and 2.5 ml/kg) 5, 30, 45 and 65 minutes after injection. The administration of these contr

In a series of 180 patients, clinically suspected of having deep venous thrombosis (DVT), contrast venography was compared with radionuclide phlebography, duplex ultrasonography and strain gauge plethysmography. In most patients lung scintigraphy was also performed to detect pulmonary embolism (PE). Venography was performed on a routine basis. All venograms were read by at least two observers (radiologists or radiologist/resident) and an inter-observer agreement was reached of 96% with a kappa value of 0.935. In six patients venography was technically impossible or inadequate, 58% of the patie

PURPOSE: Despite detailed knowledge of the effects of X-ray contrast media on cardiac function, no studies have examined the effect of contrast media injections on the subsequent tolerance to ischemia in the heart.
METHODS: Isolated perfused rat hearts were exposed to repetitive injections of iohexol, iodixanol, or ioxaglate before 30 min of global ischemia and 120 min of reperfusion. These groups were compared with control (no pretreatment) and ischemic preconditioning known to reduce infarct size. Physiologic variables and infarct size were measured
RESULTS: Pretreatment with iodixanol red

Mechanical characterization of the intervertebral disc involves labor-intensive and destructive experimental methodology. Contrast-enhanced micro-computed tomography is a nondestructive imaging modality for high-resolution visualization and glycosaminoglycan quantification of cartilaginous tissues. The purpose of this study was to determine whether anionic and cationic contrast-enhanced micro-computed tomography of the intervertebral disc can be used to indirectly assess disc mechanical properties in an ex vivo model of disc degeneration. L3/L4 motion segments were dissected from female Lewis

Radiographic contrast media (CM) are necessary to provide x-ray absorption of the bloodstream; all other observed effects need to be regarded as adverse. Four types of CM are currently used in diagnostic and interventional cardiology: ionic high-osmolar CM (HOCM), either ionic or non-ionic low-osmolar CM (LOCM), and non-ionic iso-osmolar CM (IOCM). Focusing on the potential cardiovascular effects caused by the CM, there is a clear difference between HOCM and the LOCM or IOCM. HOCM have a poorer profile due to a higher incidence of hypotension and electrophysiological effects. To prevent contra

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether previous rejection episodes may have deleterious effects on coronary vascular reserve of heart transplant recipients months after transplantation.
BACKGROUND: Coronary reserve has been demonstrated to be within the normal range in long-term transplant patients without previous episodes of rejection. Conversely, acute rejection is associated with a dramatic reduction of coronary reserve, which is rapidly restored after therapy.
METHODS: Coronary flow velocity was measured by intracoronary Doppler catheter before and after a maximally vasodilating dose o

We compared the haemodynamic effects of a low osmolality contrast medium Hexabrix 320 (meglumine/sodium ioxaglate) with a high osmolality medium Urografin 370 (meglumine/sodium diatrizoate) in 32 patients. Each underwent left ventriculography with both media, which caused similar small and transient increases in heart rate and systolic pressure. In 15 patients with coronary artery disease, the mean left ventricular end-diastolic pressure increased by 4 mmHg after hexabrix compared with 10 mmHg after urografin (P less than 0.01); it returned to normal more quickly after hexabrix. Changes after
