PURPOSE: To report three patients with superficially invasive crateriform squamous proliferations of periocular tissue.
METHODS: The authors identified three patients with superficially invasive periocular tumors that had clinical features of keratoacanthoma. Clinical histories, radiographs, and surgical pathologic specimens were reviewed.
RESULTS: All three tumors arose over several weeks, had a crateriform configuration, and exhibited superficial invasion of underlying tissues, including perineural invasion and infiltration into skeletal muscle. All three tumors were classified as invasive

Controversy continues to exist as to whether or not a keratoacanthoma is a benign lesion and can be accurately differentiated from a squamous cell carcinoma. From a review of the available evidence and clinical experience, we believe an attempt to make this distinction is unwise. It is dangerous to assume these lesions are benign. Many lesions diagnosed as keratoacanthomas have gone on to behave very aggressively and even to metastasize. We believe all lesions suspected of being keratoacanthomas should be managed by surgical excision and not observed in the hope that spontaneous involution wil

OBJECTIVE: Keratoacanthomas are fast-growing cutaneous neoplasms that can be difficult to distinguish from squamous cell carcinoma, both clinically and histologically. The uncertain behavior of these neoplasms creates a challenge in management, and treatment choice often varies significantly between cases. The objective of this review is to discuss the most common and up-to-date treatment modalities used in the management of keratoacanthomas.
METHODS: A literature search was performed using PubMed to access and review relevant keratoacanthoma treatment modalities published within the last 40

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2022eng
Subungual keratoacanthoma (SK) is a digital neoplasm that has rarely been reported in dogs and carries an excellent prognosis following surgical removal. Radiographic features of canine SK have only been briefly discussed in two prior case reports. Both articles described extensive distal phalangeal osteolysis, a feature more commonly associated with malignant digital neoplasms (e.g., subungual squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) or melanoma). This retrospective case series aimed to further characterize radiographic findings of histologically confirmed canine SK. Seven dogs met the inclusion criteri

IMPORTANCE: To our knowledge, there have been no previous reports of eruptive keratoacanthomas (KAs) in patients receiving pembrolizumab.
OBJECTIVE: To report the cases of 3 consecutive patients with pembrolizumab-induced eruptive KAs and their management.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Case report study of 3 patients from 2 centers with pembrolizumab-treated cancer who all developed eruptive KAs.
INTERVENTIONS: All 3 patients had AK treatment with clobetasol ointment and intralesional triamcinolone; 2 patients also underwent open superficial cryosurgery.
RESULTS: Three consecutive pat

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of reports of rapidly arising, isolated or eruptive keratoacanthomas (KA) and squamous cell carcinomas (CSC) on the red part of tattoos tend to suggest a non-fortuitous link with the procedure. We report herein two different presentations of KAs on tattoos: one patient with multiple eruptive KAs on sun-exposed areas of a recent red tattoo and another with a solitary lesion on a recent tattoo. We discuss the issues related to the distinction between KAs and CSCs in this particular context.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Case No. 1: A 55-year-old heavily tattooed man prese

Generalized eruptive keratoacanthoma, is considered a serious condition because the eruptions are diffuse, persistent, and recurrent. Constant pruritus, visceral neoplasms, and unsatisfactory response to treatment are ominous prognostic factors. Even if skin cancers are usually well controlled with surgical and/or radiotherapic approaches, there are some cases in which these two techniques are not effective. With respect to surgery, radiotherapy and other standard treatments, ECT acts rapidly on multiple lesions with limited side effects and no functional impairment; moreover, repeated session

BACKGROUND: Sorafenib has been approved for use in the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Cutaneous side-effects are common, including rash, hand-foot syndrome, alopecia, pruritus, dry skin and erythema. We report an original unexpected cutaneous effect: multiple keratoacanthomas. In the light of a literature review of drug-induced keratoacanthomas, we discuss the potential underlying physiopathological mechanism.
CASE REPORT: Three weeks after starting treatment with sorafenib for metastatic renal cell carcinoma, a 64-year-old man developed skin lesions on the face, ears, forearms

A girl with xeroderma pigmentosum has developed seven successive keratoacanthomas on the face, since the age of 5, during a period of two and a half years. The clinical diagnosis of keratoacanthoma was obvious for most lesions. Three keratoacanthomas have been removed and the diagnosis has been confirmed histologically. The four more recent lesions have regressed without any surgical treatment. No impairment of the cell-mediated immune function has been noticed (there is no failure in D.N.C.B. sensitization; the level of the blastogenic transformation after phytohaemagglutinin stimulation lies

A 10-year-old, Shih Tzu dog was presented with an enlarged, curled 2nd nail in the left forelimb. Digital amputation was performed and the mass was diagnosed as a nail bed keratoacanthoma (infundibular keratinizing acanthoma) histopathologically. There was no recurrence postoperatively. This is the first case report of a canine nail bed keratoacanthoma diagnosed by histologic and immunohistochemical examination including Ki-67 and p53 expression.

BACKGROUND: Generalized eruptive keratoacanthoma (GEKA) is an extremely rare variant of keratoacanthoma that poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
PATIENTS: The study included three patients presenting with highly pruritic, generalized eruption of numerous small skin and flesh-colored follicular papules. They were mainly distributed on the face, neck, and trunk. Few larger nodules were also present. Mask-like facies, mucosal involvement, and ectropion were evident in two patients. Family history was irrelevant, and general examination was unremarkable.
RESULTS: Histopathol

The treatment of vitiligo is still a challenge. Among various therapeutic modalities, phototherapy with UVB narrowband (UVB-NB) is presently considered a treatment of choice for this skin disease. The exact skin cancer risk deriving from UVB-NB is a serious concern to be determined. We report a case of keratoacanthoma developed in the vitiligo area during a prolonged course of UVB-NB therapy.

Described is the first report of familial SUKA, occurring in two of three sisters with ectodermal dysplasia, a rare, hereditary disorder involving ectodermally derived organ systems. Although rare, SUKA should be considered when assessing rapidly growing nailbed lesions. Differentiation from subungual squamous cell carcinoma is essential. Tumor excision and curettage and close postoperative follow-up are recommended, with conservative amputation reserved for tumor recurrences. If the diagnosis of SUKA is confirmed in a female, an association with ectodermal dysplasia should be sought.

PURPOSE: We report a rare case of rapid transformation of a conjunctival keratoacanthoma (KA) into a highly aggressive squamous cell carcinoma requiring enucleation. To our knowledge, this is the second such case reported in the literature.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 73-year-old man presented with a recurrent conjunctival lesion in the right eye. A slit lamp examination revealed a hyperkeratotic lesion in the limbar conjunctiva adhered to deep planes but with no ocular involvement. An incisional biopsy was performed because an area of scleromalacia was observed underlying the lesion. H

Subungual keratoacanthoma is a rare, squamoproliferative neoplasm arising at the nail bed. It may cause erosion of the underlying bone. We report a case of subungual keratoacanthoma of the right thumb in a 63-year-old man. Radiographs showed cortical erosion of the distal phalanx of the right thumb. Ultrasonography showed a mixed echoic tumor. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the tumor showed intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted images and mixed intermediate and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images with peripheral thin rim enhancement.
