Global, regional, and national burden of cervical cancer for 195 countries and territories, 2007-2017: findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide. The formulation or evaluation on prevention strategies all require an accurate understanding of the burden for cervical cancer burden. We aimed to report the up-to-date estimates of cervical cancer burden at global, regional, and national levels. METHODS: Data were extracted from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 study. The counts, age-standardized rates, and percentage changes of incidence, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and death attributed to cervical cance

Health and economic benefits of achieving contraceptive and maternal health targets in Small Island Developing States in the Pacific and Caribbean.

INTRODUCTION: Reducing unmet need for modern contraception and expanding access to quality maternal health (MH) services are priorities for improving women's health and economic empowerment. To support investment decisions, we estimated the additional cost and expected health and economic benefits of achieving the United Nations targets of zero unmet need for modern contraceptive choices and 95% coverage of MH services by 2030 in select Small Island Developing States. METHODS: Five Pacific (Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu) and four Caribbean (Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and

Policies, resource allocation, and interventions for child and adolescent mental health in low- and middle-income countries in the Western Pacific Region: a scoping review.

Child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) has become an increasingly important public health issue worldwide and particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the Western Pacific Region (WPR), where access to quality mental health care remains limited. The existing evidence on CAMH in the region is fragmented and insufficient for guiding further development and improvements in CAMH services. Against this background, we conducted a scoping review to provide the most recent evidence of the resources (legal, financial, human, infrastructural) allocated to CAMH and the effectiveness

Global Mortality and Disability-Adjusted Life Years Attributable to Tobacco Exposure Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, 1990-2021: A Systematic Analysis of GBD 2021 Data With Projections to 2042.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has emerged as a pressing global health challenge, and tobacco exposure constitutes a major modifiable risk factor-particularly among middle-aged and elderly populations. However, a comprehensive understanding of the global burden of tobacco exposure-attributable mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in this demographic remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at quantifying the global burden of deaths and DALYs attributable to tobacco exposure among middle-aged and elderly individuals with T2DM from 1990 to 2021. Global, regional, and national prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adults during 1980-2013: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013.

BACKGROUND: In 2010, overweight and obesity were estimated to cause 3·4 million deaths, 3·9% of years of life lost, and 3·8% of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) worldwide. The rise in obesity has led to widespread calls for regular monitoring of changes in overweight and obesity prevalence in all populations. Comparable, up-to-date information about levels and trends is essential to quantify population health effects and to prompt decision makers to prioritise action. We estimate the global, regional, and national prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adults during 1980-20

Twenty years of HIV surveillance in the Pacific--what do the data tell us and what do we still need to know?

BACKGROUND: Most Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) provide some level of HIV testing for their populations and record demographic data for diagnosed cases of HIV and AIDS. These routine HIV data are usually held within the national Department/Ministry of Health or National AIDS Council. Summary HIV data can illustrate important trends in HIV infection over time and by age, gender and exposure. For some countries no other data are available to illustrate the extent and distribution of HIV infection in the region. METHODS: Annual HIV and AIDS data were requested from all PICT rep

Burden of antimicrobial resistance in the WHO Southeast Asia and Western Pacific Regions, 1990-2021: a cross-country systematic analysis with forecasts to 2050.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) constitutes a critical global health challenge with major implications for public health and economic stability, increasing infection- and sepsis-related mortality. Despite growing evidence on its contribution to disease burden, comprehensive assessments of long-term trends at the regional level remain limited in the World Health Organization (WHO) Southeast Asia Region (SEAR) and Western Pacific Region (WPR). METHODS: We used data from the Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (GRAM) Project to evaluate sepsis- and AMR-related deaths and disab

Population structure and speciation in tropical seas: global phylogeography of the sea urchin Diadema.

The causes of speciation in the sea are rarely obvious, because geographical barriers are not conspicuous and dispersal abilities or marine organisms, particularly those of species with planktonic larvae, are hard to determine. The phylogenetic relations of species in cosmopolitan genera can provide information on the likely mode of their formation. We reconstructed the phylogeny of the pantropical and subtropical sea urchin genus Diadema, using sequences of mitochondrial DNA from 482 individuals collected around the world, to determine the efficacy of barriers to gene flow and to ascertain th

Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2017: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study.

IMPORTANCE: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemio

Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2016: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study.

IMPORTANCE: The increasing burden due to cancer and other noncommunicable diseases poses a threat to human development, which has resulted in global political commitments reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan on Non-Communicable Diseases. To determine if these commitments have resulted in improved cancer control, quantitative assessments of the cancer burden are required. OBJECTIVE: To assess the burden for 29 cancer groups over time to provide a framework for policy discussion, resource allocation, and research focus.

Global inequalities in tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer care quality from 1990 to 2021.

Tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer remains a major global cancer burden, but cross-national comparisons using composite proxy indicators are limited. Using Global Burden of Disease 1990-2021 estimates, we constructed a quality-of-care index (QCI) from incidence, mortality, prevalence, and disability outcomes; assessed temporal and geographic patterns; modeled associations with linear mixed models; and compared older adults with the overall population. Age-standardized incidence and death rates declined globally, but QCI remained highly unequal across 204 countries. QCI was higher in high-deve

Global, regional and national epidemiological trends of multiple myeloma from 1990 to 2021: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease study 2021.

BackgroundMultiple myeloma (MM) is a growing global public health challenge. Known epidemiological data suggest that MM accounts for approximately 10% of all hematologic malignancies and remains the second most common hematologic cancer worldwide. This study utilized data from the 2021 Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) study to evaluate the prevalence, incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and attributable risk factors of MM from 1990 to 2021, and to project future trends for the next 15 years.MethodsGBD 2021 data were analyzed to assess MM's global burden using four key

BACKGROUND: How long one lives, how many years of life are spent in good and poor health, and how the population's state of health and leading causes of disability change over time all have implications for policy, planning, and provision of services. We comparatively assessed the patterns and trends of healthy life expectancy (HALE), which quantifies the number of years of life expected to be lived in good health, and the complementary measure of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), a composite measure of disease burden capturing both premature mortality and prevalence and severity of ill

Global burden of 292 causes of death in 204 countries and territories and 660 subnational locations, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Timely and comprehensive analyses of causes of death stratified by age, sex, and location are essential for shaping effective health policies aimed at reducing global mortality. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 provides cause-specific mortality estimates measured in counts, rates, and years of life lost (YLLs). GBD 2023 aimed to enhance our understanding of the relationship between age and cause of death by quantifying the probability of dying before age 70 years (70q0) and the mean age at death by cause and sex. BACKGROUND: Measurement of changes in health across locations is useful to compare and contrast changing epidemiological patterns against health system performance and identify specific needs for resource allocation in research, policy development, and programme decision making. Using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016, we drew from two widely used summary measures to monitor such changes in population health: disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE). We used these measures to track trends and benchmark progress compared with e
