Tooth enamel dust as an asthma stimulus. A case report.

A case report of a first-year dental student with asthma, who experienced exacerbation of symptoms and a severe asthmatic crisis in the course of her preclinical dental training, is presented. Dust generated as a result of preparing natural teeth triggered the bronchoconstrictive response. Her subsequent medical and preventive measures are cited. This case identifies, for the first time, enamel dust as an asthma stimulus, thus serving as a precaution to prospective dental students and personnel afflicted with the disease and emphasizing the importance of effective face masks in dental laborato

Clinical evaluation of fixed partial dentures made in Sweden and China.

The aim of this study was to compare the quality of fixed partial dentures (FPDs) made in a Chinese dental laboratory with corresponding FPDs made in Swedish dental laboratories. Twenty-one patients were fitted with FPDs between March 2007 and December 2008. Single crowns and prostheses of up to seven units were made. All dentures, gold and CoCr alloys covered with ceramic, were produced in duplicate: one by a dental technician in China and the other by a dental technician in Sweden. The dentures were blind-tested with regard to marginal integrity, anatomic form and color, approximal and occlu

Effects of occupational environmental controls and work management on chromosomal damage in dental technicians in Japan.

Dental technicians use various materials, particularly metal alloys and monomers and polymers based on methylmethacrylate. Environmental hygiene issues surrounding the work of dental technicians have been recognized. Despite the need for observance of occupational environmental controls and work management, compliance among dental laboratories appears to be low. We evaluated the relationship between genotoxic effects in dental technicians and occupational environmental controls and work management. We used cytokinesis-blocked micronuclei (CB-MN) frequencies in peripheral lymphocytes and metal

Laboratory simulation of longitudinally cracked teeth using the step-stress cyclic loading method.

AIM: To simulate in a laboratory setting longitudinal cracking in root filled premolar teeth, using cyclic mechanical fatigue. METHODOLOGY: Mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) cavities were prepared in twenty root filled, single-rooted, mandibular premolars restored with fibre posts and resin composites. The samples were randomly divided into two groups based on the loading approaches: static loading with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min and step-stress cyclic loading (1 Hz) with increasing amplitude. The loads and numbers of cycles to failure were recorded. Micro-CT was also used to identify the fra

Environmental sustainability and travel within the dental practice.

A significant amount of dentistry's carbon emissions originate from travel (64.5%). Dental-associated travel affects air quality, releasing over 443 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 22 tonnes of particulate matter (PM2.5) annually. This reduction in air quality reduces over 325 quality-adjusted life years (QALY) per year. Wider health impacts associated with noise and traffic incidents doubles the impact on health in QALYs. Dental procedures that require shorter appointment times have disproportionately higher emissions due to patient travel. The dental team can reduce appointment times by

Analysis of workplace injuries in a dental school environment.

Workplace injuries at the University of Queensland Dental School during the period 1992-1994 were assessed to determine their incidence, and the associated indirect costs, causal factors, and appropriate preventive strategies. Overall, dental chairside assistants experienced a higher incidence of injuries than students both on a per worker and per time basis. Of the injuries with a low risk of cross-infection, burns and scalds from sterilizing equipment, and eye injuries in laboratories were the most common. This emphasizes the importance of wearing appropriate protective equipment in areas ou

[Laboratory methods for measuring adhesive bond strength between restoration materials and hard tooth tissues].

Was to review laboratory methods measuring the bond strength of adhesive dental materials to hard tooth tissues. The paper points out the impact of test conditions on the measured strength of adhesive bond to dentine and enamel. Various in vitro studies are discussed, including the analyses of fracture surfaces and test-induced stresses. These studies are found to be helpful to identify particularities, advantages, and limitations of each approach. We present a systematic picture of available bond-strength data aimed at revealing general trends in adhesive performance. No clear superiority of

Injury reports in a dental school: a two-year overview.

As teaching institutions, it is vital for dental schools to collect data on accidental injuries to identify potential problems, improve the quality of care of patients, and educate future practitioners about risk management. Our data reveal important trends concerning such injuries. These data were compiled over a two-year period (2001-03) from accident reports at one dental school. We categorized the accidents as follows: source (instrument causing the injury), recipient of injury, time of day, location within the dental school where the injury occurred, and body part injured. The population

Light and lighting in the dental office.

For any task, the eye can respond effectively if there is enough light, if that light is properly distributed, if the appropriate color correction is provided, and if visual contrasts are balanced. Dental offices differ in the types of work performed, the number of people engaged in various tasks, and the types of patients treated. Each office and each room can be planned according to the guidelines herein suggested as long as a rational analysis is applied to the result desired and the tasks being accomplished. The authors suggest that all concerned with office design, the architect, the cont

The national survey of adverse reactions to dental materials in the UK: a preliminary study by the UK Adverse Reactions Reporting Project.

OBJECTIVE: Dental treatment involves the use of a wide range of materials. Many of the dental materials or their components pose a potential risk to the patient and member of the dental team. Pre-market biocompatibility testing cannot guarantee absolute safety, making monitoring of materials likely to cause an adverse reaction essential. The prevalence of adverse reactions to dental materials amongst dental patients and staff has not been systematically monitored in the UK. This project aims to develop a systematic approach to the evaluation and monitoring of the extent and severity of adverse

Interstitial Lung Disease in a Dental Technician Diagnosed Through an Integrated Multidisciplinary Approach.

Evidence from the literature indicates that workers in the dental care sector are routinely exposed to hazardous airborne agents, particularly mineral and metal dusts. This occupational risk is further amplified in settings with inadequate ventilation and insufficient use of personal protective equipment. We discuss the case of a dental technician with a significant history of occupational exposure who presented to our clinic with exertional dyspnea. High-resolution computed tomography revealed fibrosing nonspecific interstitial pneumonia associated with emphysema, and spirometry showed a seve
