Sub-acute and chronic MRI findings in bilateral canine fibrotic contracture of the infraspinatus muscle.

A six-year-old, 30-kg female German pointer dog was presented for examination with a history of pre-existing right-forelimb lameness and more recent (3 months) persistent lameness in the left-forelimb. Physical examination revealed mild left-forelimb lameness and a mild circumduction movement. There were no signs of pain or crepitation detected during manipulation of the shoulders, but the animal was unable to fully flex both glenohumeral joints. Magnetic resonance imaging, using fast recovery fast spin echo T2-weighted and fat saturated proton density sequences, revealed abnormal heterogeneou

A Case of Animal and Domestic Abuse Initially Diagnosed as Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease.

A 1 yr old castrated male shih tzu was evaluated for an acute right rear limb lameness and hyphema in the anterior chamber of the right eye. On initial examination, the dog was non-weight bearing on his right rear limb. Ophthalmic examination revealed a centrally located, superficial corneal ulcer in the right eye and blood in the anterior chamber. Radiographic findings of the pelvis and right rear were suggestive of avascular necrosis of the right femoral neck with resultant fracture and possible avascular necrosis of the left femoral neck. The dog presented 20 days later for evaluation of an

Lameness detection based on multivariate continuous sensing of milk yield, rumination, and neck activity.

The objective of this study was to develop and validate a mathematical model to detect clinical lameness based on existing sensor data that relate to the behavior and performance of cows in a commercial dairy farm. Identification of lame (44) and not lame (74) cows in the database was done based on the farm's daily herd health reports. All cows were equipped with a behavior sensor that measured neck activity and ruminating time. The cow's performance was measured with a milk yield meter in the milking parlor. In total, 38 model input variables were constructed from the sensor data comprising a

Depressed DHEA and increased sickness response behaviors in lame dairy cows with inflammatory foot lesions.

Lameness is a multifactorial condition influenced by the environment, genetics, management and nutrition. Detection of lameness is subjective and currently limited to visual locomotion observations which lack reliability and sensitivity. The objective of this study was to search for potential biomarkers of inflammatory foot lesions that underlie most cases of lameness in dairy cows, with a focus on the sickness response and relevant endocrine, immune and behavioral changes. Serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were collected from eight sound and eight lame high-producing Holstei

Treatment of temporary upward fixation of the patella in an alpaca by abrasion trochleoplasty and imbrication of the medial retinacular fascia.

A two-year-old female alpaca suddenly became lame on its right hindlimb. Eight days later clinical and radiographic examinations showed that the patella had become temporarily fixed within the supratrochlear notch of the femur. Under general anaesthesia an abrasion trochleoplasty followed by fascial imbrication was carried out. After two weeks in supporting slings, the animal put full weight on the leg, and six months after the surgery it showed no signs of lameness or recurrence of the upward fixation.

Evaluation of a composite pain scale including facial expressions for detecting orthopedic pain in lame dairy cows.

Orthopedic disease, presenting as lameness, is a common cause of pain in dairy cattle, often implying a prolonged course of disease, with significant economic losses and impaired animal welfare. To mitigate these negative effects, early identification of lameness and monitoring of pain levels during recovery are crucial. This study aimed to evaluate whether the Cow Pain Scale (CPS) can be used to detect pain behaviors in stationary dairy cows with mild to moderate lameness or not, and to investigate the association between certain CPS items and orthopedic disease. Data were collected on a rese

Clinicopathological findings in horses with a bi- or tripartite navicular bone.

BACKGROUND: Navicular bone partition is a rare condition reported in horses, which is during the evaluation of a lameness or prepurchase examination often misinterpreted for a parasagittal fracture. In this report, the clinicopathological findings of three cases of navicular bone partition are evaluated. The possible pathomechanisms underlying the condition are hypothesised, focusing on a potential origin of foetal vascular disturbance. This study is furthermore aiming at a clearer and earlier recognition of navicular bone partition, since this condition would finally predispose for a clinical

Ulnocarpal arthrodesis in a cat.

A nine-year-old cat was presented with non-weight-bearing lameness of the right forelimb subsequent to an old fracture of the antebrachium previously treated by external stabilisation. Radiography showed severe atrophic non-union of the distal third of the radius and carpal luxation. Ulnocarpal arthrodesis was performed using a uniplanar external fixator. Follow-up radiography showed that bone fusion was slow but without complication. After 16 weeks, the external fixator was removed, and a Robert-Jones bandage was applied for one month. From postoperative week 2 onwards, the animal progressive
