YERSINIA PSEUDOTUBERCULOSIS INFECTION IN LIONS (PANTHERA LEO) AT A ZOOLOGICAL PARK.

Two co-housed 17-yr-old male lions (Panthera leo) and one 15-yr-old female lion in an adjacent enclosure developed acute lethargy, depression, anorexia, and ataxia at a zoological park in central North Carolina, United States. One of the male lions and the female lion were found dead 5 and 4 d after the onset of clinical signs, respectively. The other male lion recovered without any clinical treatment. A third male lion housed with the female lion never developed clinical signs. Postmortem examination, microscopic evaluation, and bacterial culture of the liver from both deceased lions confirme

Mucoperiosteal exostoses in the tympanic bulla of African lions (Panthera leo).

Mucoperiosteal exostoses (MpEs) of the tympanic bulla (TB), also referred as middle-ear otoliths, have been occasionally described in dogs and cats in association with clinical signs of otitis media or as an incidental finding, but they have not been recorded in other species. In this report, we describe the radiographic, gross, and histopathologic features of MpEs in 8 African lions (Panthera leo). All animals (5 males and 3 females) were adults that had been kept in captivity and had their skeletons conserved as part of an anatomic academic collection. A radiographic study revealed mineraliz

Digenetic trematodes in South American sea lions from southern Brazilian waters.

The aim of this work was to perform a systematic study to detect and quantify the digenetic trematode infections in South American sea lions from the southern Brazilian coast. Twenty-four South American sea lions, Otaria flavescens (Carnivora: Otaridae), were found dead along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, between June 2010 and September of 2011. Two trematode species were found in the intestines of O. flavescens, i.e., Stephanoprora uruguayense (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa (Digenea: Heterophyidae). Ascocotyle (P.) longa reached a prevalence of 33

Needle biopsy for hepatic vitamin A levels in lions (Panthera leo).

Hypovitaminosis A (HA)-related skull malformations resulting in neurologic abnormalities and death have been, and still are, reported in captive lions (Panthera leo) worldwide. Liver vitamin A (VA) concentration is the most reliable indicator of animals' VA status, and its assessment is essential in prevention and treatment of HA in lions. A percutaneous needle liver biopsy using high-performance liquid chromatography ultraviolet retinoid analysis for VA concentration measurement was validated. It was first assessed in vitro using chicken liver. Later, the safety and feasibility of ultrasound-

Gastric spiral bacteria and intramuscular sarcocysts in African lions from Namibia.

Six juvenile male, one adult male, and three adult, female African lions (Panthera leo) from Etosha National Park, Republic of Namibia were presented for necropsy. Two of four adults and one of six juveniles had moderate numbers of gastric spiral bacteria. Additionally, four of four adults had sarcocysts. All juveniles had enteric Sarcocystis sp. oocysts, but no sarcocysts. The gastric spiral bacteria were located extracellularly in fundic and pyloric glands, and also apparently intracellularly within parietal cells in the fundic region. The organisms were 4 to 8 microns long, 0.63 micron wide

Fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy in a lion (Panthera leo).

A 6-yr-old, captive-born male lion (Panthera leo) with a 3-day history of acute and nonprogressive spastic paraplegia of the hind limbs and flaccid paraplegia of the left forelimb, was submitted for postmortem examination. Before and after the onset of the neurologic signs, neither hematologic nor other significant clinical abnormalities were observed. The only remarkable gross lesion was restricted to the C6-C7 segments of the spinal cord, where a focal and asymmetric enlargement of the cord displaced the nerve roots. On the cut surface, a poorly demarcated dark red hemorrhagic lesion involve

Independent Validation of the LIONS PREY in Patients Undergoing Navigational Bronchoscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate malignancy risk prediction of pulmonary lesions is essential in the context of lung cancer screening and early diagnosis. Widely used risk prediction tools, such as the Brock and Herder models, have shown limited performance in high-risk cohorts referred for bronchoscopic evaluation. The LIONS PREY (lung lesion score predicts malignancy) was specifically developed to provide a simple and reliable estimate of malignancy risk in this clinical setting. This study aimed to externally validate the LIONS PREY model and to compare its predictive performance with the Brock and H

Output compensation of auditory brainstem responses in dolphins and sea lions.

Cochlear dispersion causes increasing delays between neural responses from high-frequency regions in the cochlear base and lower-frequency regions toward the apex. For broadband stimuli, this can lead to neural responses that are out-of-phase, decreasing the amplitude of farfield neural response measurements. In the present study, cochlear traveling-wave speed and effects of dispersion on farfield auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were investigated by first deriving narrowband ABRs in bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions using the high-pass subtractive masking technique. Derived-band

Heart rate regulation in diving sea lions: the vagus nerve rules.

Recent publications have emphasized the potential generation of morbid cardiac arrhythmias secondary to autonomic conflict in diving marine mammals. Such conflict, as typified by cardiovascular responses to cold water immersion in humans, has been proposed to result from exercise-related activation of cardiac sympathetic fibers to increase heart rate, combined with depth-related changes in parasympathetic tone to decrease heart rate. After reviewing the marine mammal literature and evaluating heart rate profiles of diving California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), we present an alternative

Infection of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) with terrestrial Brucella spp.

Infections with Brucella ceti and pinnipedialis are prevalent in marine mammals worldwide. A total of 22 California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) were examined to determine their exposure to Brucella spp. at San Esteban Island in the Gulf of California, Mexico, in June and July 2011. Although samples of blood, vaginal mucus and milk cultured negative for these bacteria, the application of rose Bengal, agar gel immunodiffusion, PCR and modified fluorescence polarization assays found that five animals (22.7%) had evidence of exposure to Brucella strains. The data also suggested that in two

Leishmania infantum infection in two captive barbary lions (Panthera leo leo).

A female barbary lion (Panthera leo leo) from the Montpellier Zoological Park (France) showing colitis, epistaxis, and lameness with pad ulcers was positive by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Leishmania infantum. Further indirect immunofluorescence (IFAT) tests on the banked sera from all lions of the park detected another infected but asymptomatic female, which was confirmed by PCR on ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) blood sample. Leishmania infantum zymodeme MON-1 was cultured from EDTA bone marrow samples sampled from this second animal. The first female was successfully treated w

Sudden death associated with Clostridium sordellii in captive lions (Panthera leo).

In the spring of 2003, a series of sudden deaths in a group of adult lions (Panthera leo) with a previous history of depression, inanition, and lethargy, was investigated. Five animals died within 24 to 36 hours after onset of signs of disease. Serologic screening for viral disease detection was negative, evidence of parasites was not detected, and results of a complete blood count and serum biochemical analysis were within reference intervals in all lions. The most relevant lesions observed were multiple areas of necrosis and hemorrhage in the intestinal outer muscular layer, and cellulitis w

Neurologic lesions in young captive lions associated with vitamin A deficiency.

Ataxia and incoordination occurred in 7 lion cubs in a lion park. Postmortem examination of 3 cubs revealed thickened skull bones which compressed the brain and lead to prolapse of the posterior vermis of the cerebellum through the foramen magnum. In 2 of the lions compression of the anterior cervical spinal cord caused marked damage particularly in the dorsal funiculi. In both cubs the central canal of the spinal cord was abnormal being extended laterally. The pathological changes in the bones and the brain together with low liver vitamin A levels lead to a diagnosis of hypovitaminosis A.

Perioperative dobutamine infusion in an African lion (Panthera leo).

Laparoscopic ovariectomy under general anesthesia was planned in a 10-year-old, 146 kg, apparently healthy female African lion (Panthera leo). The lion was immobilized via intramuscular darts containing midazolam (0.033 mg/kg), medetomidine (50 µg/kg) and ketamine (2.5 mg/kg), and intubated using an endotracheal tube (16 mm internal diameter). The anesthesia was maintained using sevoflurane (0.9-2.1% end-tidal concentration), in combination with remifentanil (0.1 µg/kg/min) and ketamine (11 µg/kg/min) at a constant rate infusion (CRI), with Hartmann's solution (5 mL/kg/hr). Pleural mesothelioma in a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus).

A 25-year-old female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) reared in an aquarium died following a history of anorexia, lethargy, abnormal protrusion of the skin, and oral respiration. At necropsy, multiple yellowish-white nodules with diameters of 0.1-0.5 cm were disseminated in the thoracic cavity and lungs. Histopathologically, the nodules were continuous with normal mesothelium and were characterized by the proliferation of spindle-shaped to polygonal neoplastic cells with prominent atypia. The neoplastic cells exhibited diffuse, strong staining for vimentin and partial, weak to mode
