Artificial Intelligence: An Emerging Tool for Studying Drug-Induced Liver Injury.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a complex and potentially severe adverse reaction to drugs, herbal products or dietary supplements. DILI can mimic other liver diseases clinical presentation, and currently lacks specific diagnostic biomarkers, which hinders its diagnosis. In some cases, DILI may progress to acute liver failure. Given its public health risk, novel methodologies to enhance the understanding of DILI are crucial. Recently, the increasing availability of larger datasets has highlighted artificial intelligence (AI) as a powerful tool to construct complex models. In this review, w

Effectiveness of multimodal artificial liver support for acute-on-chronic liver failure: A single-center cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Multimodal artificial liver support (ALS) has been proven to be effective in a porcine model of acute liver failure. This study aimed to evaluate the curative effect in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). METHODS: Data from ACLF patients receiving multimodal ALS between January 2014 and August 2019 were collected. Patients were divided into two groups according to the patterns of ALS: a trimodal ALS group (trimodal group) and a bimodal ALS group (bimodal group). A propensity score matching was performed to control for baseline bias between the groups. Survival rat

Advanced In Vitro Platforms for Experimental Liver Research: From Organoids and Liver-on-Chip to Omics and Artificial Intelligence.

Hepatocytes perform essential physiological functions in the human body. Gaining more profound insight into the liver structure, diseases, and physiology by using in vitro models can help to propose more relevant clinical applications. Conventional in vitro liver models, such as two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures, fail to adequately replicate the hepatic microenvironment, even when improved by adding additional cell types and extracellular matrix (ECM). These models do not address all necessary key components to mimic in vivo conditions, particularly multicellularity, specific ECM, and proper

Artificial intelligence for the classification of focal liver lesions in ultrasound - a systematic review.

Focal liver lesions are detected in about 15% of abdominal ultrasound examinations. The diagnosis of frequent benign lesions can be determined reliably based on the characteristic B-mode appearance of cysts, hemangiomas, or typical focal fatty changes. In the case of focal liver lesions which remain unclear on B-mode ultrasound, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) increases diagnostic accuracy for the distinction between benign and malignant liver lesions. Artificial intelligence describes applications that try to emulate human intelligence, at least in subfields such as the classification of

Tissue reaction of the liver of cattle to an artificial or natural infection with Cysticercus bovis.

An evaluation of the tissue reaction to Cysticercus bovis in the liver of calves with an artificial infection and that of oxen with a natural infection provided evidence for the fact that the liver of these animals responded to an infection with C. bovis with an extensive granulomatous reaction. A comparison of tissue reaction to cysticerci at an identical stage of development showed that the reaction of the liver parenchyma was much more intensive than that of the heart and the skeletal muscles. In the described cases, this intensive reaction caused the death of the cysticerci before the comp

Changes in peripheral T-lymphocyte subsets in acute-on-chronic liver failure patients with artificial liver support system.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: HBV-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (AoCLF) is associated with a high mortality rate. An artificial liver support system (ALSS) is a newly emerging therapeutic option, which can be implemented in routine patient care. In order to determine if any pretreatment immunological parameter could be an indicator to evaluate immune states for the outcome of the AoCLF patients, we analyzed the relationship between the level of T-lymphocyte subsets (CD4+, CD8+, CD4/CD8 ratio) and its therapeutic effect and prognosis. METHODOLOGY: Sixty-three patients with AoCLF were enrolled in 2
