Inflammation is the body's response to infection or tissue injury in order to restore and maintain homeostasis. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE-2) derived from arachidonic acid (AA), via up-regulation of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), is a key mediator of inflammation and can also be induced by several other factors including stress, chromosomal aberration, or environmental factors. Targeting prostaglandin production by inhibiting COX-2 is hence relevant for the successful resolution of inflammation. Waltheria indica L. is a traditional medicinal plant whose extracts have demonstrated COX-2 inhibitory proper

Everyday, many patients get radiotherapy for prostatic, rectal, uterine cervix and other pelvic organs cancer. Dysuria is common in pelvic, especially prostate radiotherapy, but there is not any established and confirmed treatment for this therapeutic side effect. Therefore, an alternative therapeutic method, using herbal preparation, may be an effective solution. This study seeks a defensible suggestion in Iranian Traditional Medicine (ITM). In ITM, a few medicinal herbs such as Plantago psyllium, Cydonia oblonga, Portulaca oleracea and some species of Malvaceae and Cucurbitaceae family are i

Diseases of Theobroma cacao L. (Malvaceae) disrupt cocoa bean supply and economically impact growers. Vascular streak dieback (VSD), caused by Ceratobasidium theobromae, is a new encounter disease of cacao currently contained to southeast Asia and Melanesia. Resistance to VSD has been tested with large progeny trials in Sulawesi, Indonesia, and in Papua New Guinea with the identification of informative quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Using a VSD susceptible progeny tree (clone 26), derived from a resistant and susceptible parental cross, we assembled the genome to chromosome-level and discrimi

The emerging drug resistance and lack of safer and more potent antifungal agents make Candida infections another hot topic in the healthcare system. At the same time, the potential of plant products in developing novel antifungal drugs is also in the limelight. Considering these facts, we have investigated the different extracts of the flowers of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis of the Malvaceae family for their antifungal efficacy against five different pathogenic Candida strains. Among the various extracts, the chloroform extract showed the maximum zone of inhibition (26.6 ± 0.5 mm) against the Candid

Culex quinquefasciatus and Mansonia annulifera are abundant in the rural areas of Kuttanadu, Kerala, India. Bloodmeal identification for individuals of these species collected in this region was determined by the agar-gel precipitin test. A total of 2,328 blood smears from Cx. quinquefasciatus (1,148) and Ma. annulifera (1,180) was tested. Results showed that Cx. quinquefasciatus and Ma. annulifera were highly anthropophilic and that human feeding accounted for 74 and 66% of the total bloodmeals tested. Feeding on cattle accounted for only 1.5 and 2.1% of Cx. quinquefasciatus and Ma. annulifer
