Investigation of Emergency Nurses in Detecting Foreign Bodies in Soft Tissues With Ultrasonography: A Manikin Study.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign bodies in the soft tissue are a critical clinical condition after traumatic injuries. Physical examination is unreliable, and plain radiographs cannot detect radiolucent foreign bodies. In our study, we investigated emergency nurses' foreign body detecting skills on soft tissue with focused ultrasonography. METHODS: This study was planned prospectively with 8 emergency nurses. Emergency nurses underwent 3 hours of theoretical and practical training in imaging foreign bodies with ultrasonography. Chicken thighs were used as foreign body manikins. Metal, wood, and glass ma

Retromolar intubation with video intubating stylet in difficult airway: A randomized crossover manikin study.

OBJECTIVE: Difficult airway situations, such as trismus and neck rigidity, may prohibit standard midline orotracheal intubation. An alternative route of intubation from the retromolar space using a fiberoptic scope or rigid intubation stylet has been reported. There is no study investigating the applicability of retromolar intubation using a video intubating stylet. This study comparatively analyzed difficult airway management using a video intubating stylet in the retromolar and standard midline approaches. METHODS: A randomized crossover manikin study was conducted between January 2021 and

Competence in the use of supraglottic airways by Australian surf lifesavers for cardiac arrest ventilation in a manikin.

OBJECTIVES: Lifesavers in Australia are taught to use pocket mask (PM) rescue breathing and bag valve mask (BVM) ventilation, despite evidence that first responders might struggle with these devices. Novices have successfully used the Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) Supreme and iGel devices previously, but there has been no previous comparison of the ability to train lifesavers to use the supraglottic airways compared to standard techniques for cardiac arrest ventilation. METHODS: The study is a prospective educational intervention whereby 113 lifesavers were trained to use the LMA and iGel supra

Optimization of air supply mode of vehicle air conditioning based on digital thermal manikin.

With the rapid development of the automobile industry, the public's demand for automobile diversification is growing steadily.People are no longer satisfied with basic driving convenience, more attention is now directed to the thermal comfort of the cabin. In order to build the relationship between in-vehicle environment parameters and thermal comfort index, the concept of equivalent temperature (Teq) was introduced, and then the DTM reflecting the thermal comfort of the human body was applied to the simulation of ANSYS Fluent. For a specific working condition of the vehicle air conditioning,

A Comparison of Direct Laryngoscopy and Videolaryngoscopy for Endotracheal Intubation by Inexperienced Users: A Pediatric Manikin Study.

OBJECTIVE: Direct laryngoscopy (DL) is the most common technique for endotracheal intubation, whereas videolaryngoscopy provides an indirect view of the glottis without the need to align the oral, pharyngeal, and tracheal axes. The current study compares videolaryngoscopy with DL among experienced and inexperienced users for endotracheal intubation using a pediatric manikin. METHODS: Participants performed DL using Miller and Macintosh laryngoscopes and videolaryngoscopy using CMAC and GlideScope devices on a manikin (SimBaby; Laerdel, Wappingers Falls, NY). Comprehensive evaluation of manikin-based airway training with second generation supraglottic airway devices.

BACKGROUND: Supraglottic airway devices (SADs) are an essential second line tool during difficult airway management after failed tracheal intubation. Particularly for such challenging situations the handling of an SAD requires sufficient training. We hypothesized that the feasibility of manikin-based airway management with second generation SADs depends on the type of manikin. METHODS: Two airway manikins (TruCorp AirSim® and Laerdal Resusci Anne® Airway Trainer™) were evaluated by 80 experienced anesthesia providers using 5 different second generation SADs (LMA® Supreme™ [LMA], Ambu® AuraGai

Ventilation feedback device for manual ventilation in simulated respiratory arrest: a crossover manikin study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that providing adequate ventilation during CPR is essential. While hypoventilation is often feared by most caregivers on the scene, the most critical problem remains hyperventilation. We developed a Ventilation Feedback Device (VFD) for manual ventilation which monitors ventilatory parameters and provides direct feedback about ventilation quality to the rescuer. This study aims to compare the quality of conventional manual ventilation to ventilation with VFD on a simulated respiratory arrest patient. METHODS: Forty healthcare providers were enrolled and instruct

Influence of body position during Heimlich maneuver to relieve supralaryngeal obstruction: a manikin study.

UNLABELLED: To study the most effective body position for Heimlich maneuver. METHODS: A choking simulation manikin was connected to a laryngeal model of a child or an adult, and a differential pressure transducer recorded the airway pressure and waveform during the maneuver. A konjac jelly was placed on the larynx to mimic complete supralaryngeal obstruction. The maneuver (five successive compressions) was carried out six times each in standing, prone, and supine positions. For cases of children, we added a supine position with a pillow under the back. RESULTS: In the adult model, airway obs

Efficacy of Coopdech videolaryngoscope: comparisons with a Macintosh laryngoscope and the Airway Scope in a manikin with difficult airways.

We studied the efficacy of the Coopdech videolaryngoscope Portable VLP-100, by comparing it with a Macintosh laryngoscope, and another videolaryngoscope, the Airway Scope (AWS), in a manikin with four simulated difficult airways. In a randomized, crossover design, each of 50 residents inserted the three devices, in turn, and graded the view of the glottis at laryngoscopy. Time to see the glottis, time to intubate the trachea, and the success rate of tracheal intubation (within 120 s) were recorded. In all situations, the AWS provided a significantly shorter time to see the glottis. In a maniki

Assessment of the speed and ease of insertion of three supraglottic airway devices by paramedics: a manikin study.

BACKGROUND: Control of the airway is a priority during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and/or following a failed intubation attempt. Supraglottic airway devices provide more effective airway management than bag-valve-mask-ventilation (BVMV) and can be effectively used by non-anaesthetists. METHODS: 36 paramedic students were timed to ascertain how long it took them to place an Igel, laryngeal mask airway (LMA) or laryngeal tube airway (LTA) into a manikin. Following insertion, students were interviewed to see which device they preferred and why. RESULTS: The Igel was consistently the fastest a

Evaluation of tracheal intubation in several positions by the Pentax-AWS Airway Scope: a manikin study.

PURPOSE: In emergency situations, rescuers must occasionally secure the airway while the patient is in a restricted position rather than in the ideal supine position. We hypothesized that the Pentax-AWS Airway Scope (AWS) may be useful for emergent tracheal intubation in such positions. METHODS: Thirteen non-anesthesia residents performed tracheal intubation on a simulated manikin in the supine (Supine), left-lateral decubitus (Left-LT), right-lateral decubitus (Right-LT), prone (Prone), and sitting (Sitting) position, respectively, to assess AWS performance. RESULTS: Intubations were succes

Ambient oxygen enrichment during cardiopulmonary resuscitation: an overestimated risk? - Insights from a manikin study.

BACKGROUND/ AIM: To reduce the risk of fire, the ERC resuscitation guidelines recommend removing all oxygen-delivery devices at least 1 m away from the patient's chest prior to defibrillation. This recommendation is based on the assumption of relevant local oxygen accumulation. The presented study aimed to characterise ambient oxygen concentrations during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and to assess the effect of removing oxygen-delivery devices. METHODS: In a controlled mannequin-based simulation study, 20 resuscitation scenarios were performed under standardised conditions, varying oxy

Comparative Efficacy of Face-to-Face and Right-Rear Upright Intubation in a Randomized Crossover Manikin Study.

INTRODUCTION: Upright intubation is essential for managing difficult airways but can be challenging, especially for less experienced clinicians. Face-to-face intubation may lower first-pass success rates due to unfamiliar orientation. New videolaryngoscope devices have the potential to improve intubation success. We aimed to compare first-pass success rates, intubation duration, and glottic view between the right-rear and face-to-face approaches, using channeled videolaryngoscope, hyperangulated videolaryngoscope, and video stylet for upright intubation. METHODS: We conducted a cross-over man
