Marijuana is the most commonly abused illicit drug in the United States (US) and much of the Westernized World with a steadily increasing prevalence in usage and abuse over the past decade, especially among adolescents. Much of the available data on 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, relates to its neurological effects and anti-emetic properties, with very little on the cardiovascular (CV) effects of THC. Available literature shows that THC has three major effects on the CV and the peripheral vasculature in the form of "cannabis arteritis," cannabis-in

The transition to adulthood may be especially difficult for those who use drugs and alcohol regularly. While research clearly links adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) with later substance use, many studies have explored only a limited range of ACEs, and have focused on the number instead of specific types of ACE. Objectives: The current study examined the role of ACEs on the likelihood of frequent marijuana and alcohol use among a community sample of emerging adults (N = 185). This research builds on and extends previous work by focusing on a low-income sample, examining specific types of AC

In 1985 approximately 120,000 American high school seniors smoked marijuana daily. We interviewed 35 middle-class, cannabis-dependent adolescents with a mean age of 16 years who were patients in a drug treatment program. The patients also completed a lengthy self-assessment questionnaire designed to elicit information on drug-related problems. Our results show that family harmony, school attendance, and school achievement deteriorated once these young people began to use marijuana at least 4 days a week. The following behaviors were noted: remaining away from home without permission or parenta

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to determine whether donor substance abuse (opioid overdose death, opioid use, cigarette or marijuana smoking) impacts lung acceptance and recipient outcomes.
METHODS: Donor offers to a single center from 2013 to 2019 were reviewed to determine if lung acceptance rates and recipient outcomes were affected by donor substance abuse.
RESULTS: There were 3515 donor offers over the study period. A total of 154 offers (4.4%) were opioid use and 117 (3.3%) were opioid overdose deaths. A total of 1744 donors (65.0%) smoked cigarettes and 69 donors (2.6%) smoked mar

Marijuana is the most common illicit drug of abuse in adolescents, nationally and globally. What is currently known about the effects of marijuana on adolescents and their lives reveals a number of concerns, ranging from acute physical effects to long-term physical, mental, and social consequences. As states begin to re-evaluate marijuana policies, it is important that the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults remain a priority. Much about marijuana and its medicinal uses is still not known, nor is there adequate data about the long-term effects of use of stronger marijuana pro

Drawing on stress and life-course perspectives and using panel data from 1,286 south Florida young adults, we assess three critical questions regarding the role of marijuana in the "gateway hypothesis." First, does teen marijuana use independently (causally) affect subsequent use of more dangerous substances? Second, if so, does that effect apply to the abuse of other illicit substances, as defined by the DSM-IV, or only to the use of such substances? Finally, does any causal effect of teen marijuana use survive beyond adolescence, or is it a short-term effect that subsides as adolescents tran

This study investigates the potential heterogeneity of ecstasy or MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine) users. Data came from the 2001-2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). Latent class analysis (LCA) and multinomial logistic regression procedures were used to identify subtypes of ecstasy users. Approximately 1.6% (n = 562) of adult participants (N = 43,093) reported lifetime ecstasy use. LCA identified three subtypes of ecstasy users. Class 1 exhibited pervasive use of most drug classes (ecstasy-polydrug users, 37%). Class 2 reported a high rat

This study examines the effect of women's alcohol abuse during pregnancy on the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4) levels of their babies at birth. Forty-seven babies were born to mothers identified as substance abusers. Maternal use of marijuana and/or cocaine did not result in newborns' TSH and T4 hormone levels being significantly different from non-substance-abusing controls' TSH and T4 levels. Alcohol use, however, was significantly linked to lower newborn TSH levels, lower than TSH levels of a control sample of newborns whose mothers used marijuana and/or cocaine, and l

Blood or urine specimens from nearly 600 fatally injured drivers in two Los Angeles County studies were analyzed for the presence of alcohol and other drugs of abuse, including PCP, cocaine, opiates and marijuana. The results of the preliminary study indicate that 65 out of 102 fatally injured drivers had used alcohol and/or another drug of abuse - 34 had used alcohol only, 12 had used one or more other drug(s) of abuse, and 19 had used alcohol in combination with another drug of abuse. The results of the larger follow-up study, begun a year later, indicate a continued high level of both alcoh

Drug abuse during pregnancy in rural populations has received less attention than that in urban populations. Urban studies have reported alarming rates, but it is unknown whether the situation is the same in rural areas. To investigate this, urine samples were collected anonymously from 181 pregnant women who presented to the University of Missouri clinics for care and who resided in communities of less than 25,000. Each urine specimen was tested for cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, barbiturates, opiates, phencyclidine, benzodiazepines, ethanol, and nicotine. Of the 181 specimens, 83 (46%) co

We report the case of a 17-year-old boy with a significant history of drug and alcohol abuse, which included smoking marijuana mixed with brodifacoum. As a consequence, the patient developed a prolonged coagulopathy that persisted for more than 1 year. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported in the literature in which super-warfarin intoxication has been associated with marijuana smoking. This report should increase the awareness of pathologists and clinicians when examining a patient with a history of drug abuse who exhibits persistent vitamin K1-dependent coagulopathy.

Marijuana, derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, is the most commonly abused illicit drug in the United States. Now, more than ever, due to changing regulations, marijuana is more readily available and is known to be habitually used by millions. The neuropsychiatric effects of marijuana are well-known which include chronic fatigue syndrome and polyphagia. However, marijuana is also known to exert cardiac effects, such as tachycardia, hypotension, and hypertension. Marijuana has also been described in association with atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and cardiac arrest. However,

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with adolescent substance use. However, the influence of individual ACEs after controlling for concurrent ACEs is understudied. Methods: Using longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n = 3200), we evaluated binary logistic models to test associations from 11 individual ACEs at ages 3-9 (physical abuse; emotional abuse; neglect; housing instability; food insecurity; community violence; parental depression, problematic substance use, intimate partner violence [IPV], incarceration, and death) to adole

BACKGROUND: The initiation of substance use during adolescence is a significant public health concern with long-term implications. Structural and environmental factors, such as community-level crime statistics related to drug offenses, are often assumed to influence the likelihood of substance use among youth. However, the relationship between these environmental crime indicators and early substance use initiation in adolescents is not well understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the association between environmental drug-related crime statistics-derived from Uniform Crime Reports,

Substance abuse can occur with legal drugs (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, prescription medications), illegal drugs that are purchased on the street, or prescription drugs used for reasons other than health. Alcohol is the most commonly used legal drug, and cocaine, heroin, and marijuana are the most commonly used illegal drugs. Each drug has specific effects on body systems. Some drugs can lead to acute and chronic problems; some even can cause death. Perioperative nurses may be among the few health care professionals who assess and care for substance abusers. As such, they should be prepared to rec

Substance abuse is infrequently addressed during pre- and post-transplant care. However, the significant increase in the use of nicotine- and marijuana-containing products in the general and transplant adolescent population is concerning. In addition, alcohol use/abuse remains prevalent in the US population as it is highly accessible. Pediatric transplant providers should be prepared to screen for the use of any of these substances (eg, alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines) and to counsel them about the dangers of substance use and abuse including the unique dangers of

Previous neuroimaging studies showed that use of marijuana can alter patterns of cortical activation during rest or a task challenge. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine whether recent cannabis abuse contributed to stress-induced blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) contrast in a group of cocaine-dependent individuals. Emotional stress was induced using the script-guided imagery paradigm, in which subjects imagined being in a real-life stressful situation and, as a control, in a neutral situation, while BOLD signals of their brain were acquired with a 1.5 T scanner. The sharp rise in drug abuse in the past decade has led to the development of new sources of information on drug-abuse trends. These include surveys, drug-related emergencies, drug-abuse treatment, hepatitis rates, and various types of law enforcement information. This paper summarizes data currently available for heroin, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, and barbiturates. Heroin use occurred in epidemic form in the late 1960s. Some cities, which had experienced a subsequent decline in heroin use, recently have reported an increase again. Marijuana use has increased steadily. The abuse of amph
