Occupational attainment, smoking, alcohol intake, and marijuana use: ethnic-gender differences in the CARDIA study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prospective interrelationship of smoking, alcohol intake, marijuana use, and educational and occupational attainment of Black and White young adults. METHODS: Logistic or mixed model linear regression were used to evaluate relationships between self-reported substance use, ethnicity, gender, college graduation, and four measures of occupational attainment. RESULTS: College graduation in the next 10 years was negatively associated with smoking and marijuana use, but not daily alcohol consumption in all ethnic and gender groups. In Whites, marijuana use was associat

Understanding the Placental Biology of Tobacco Smoke, Nicotine, and Marijuana (THC) Exposures During Pregnancy.

Widespread public health campaigns have reduces the prevalence of tobacco and nicotine exposures during pregnancy in the United States. However, tobacco and nicotine exposures during pregnancy persist as a common modifiable perinatal risk exposure. Furthermore, declines in tobacco use have been accompanied by parallel rises in both the prevalence and incidence of marijuana use in pregnancy. This is worrisome, as the macromolecules which comprise tobacco and marijuana smoke affect placental function. In this chapter we summarize the decades of evidence contributing to our understanding of the p

Influence of the donor history of tobacco and marijuana smoking on early and intermediate lung transplant outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Donor smoking histories are common in the lung donor pool, which are known to adversely affect post-lung transplant (LTx) outcomes. However, no evidence is available about smoking status (current/former), cumulative dose effect, or the combined effect of tobacco with marijuana. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our local state-based donation organization records and subsequent LTx recipient outcomes. The primary outcome was 3-year graft survival, with cause of death as secondary outcomes. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to explore smoking status or

Antiemetic efficacy of smoked marijuana: subjective and behavioral effects on nausea induced by syrup of ipecac.

Although the public debate about the legalization of marijuana has continued for as long as 25 years, few controlled studies have been conducted to assess its potential medical benefits. The present study examined the antiemetic effect of smoked marijuana cigarettes (8.4 and 16.9 mg Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol [THC]) compared to a highly potent antiemetic drug, ondansetron (8 mg) in 13 healthy volunteers. Nausea and emesis were induced by syrup of ipecac. Marijuana significantly reduced ratings of "queasiness" and slightly reduced the incidence of vomiting compared to placebo. Ondansetron co

Cannabis Associated "High" Cardiovascular Morbidity and Mortality: Marijuana Smoke Like Tobacco Smoke? A Déjà Vu/Déjà Vécu Story?

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use has increased over the past several years as some countries have legalized its use for the treatment of certain medical conditions and/or for recreational use. Thus, concerns have risen about potential adverse health effects. Increasing number of reports have associated cannabis use with serious cardiovascular (CV) complications. Furthermore, there appears to be a likeness in the harmful health effects, especially on the CV and respiratory systems, of cannabis smoking to those of tobacco smoking. OBJECTIVE: To review the CV effects of cannabis use and compare them wit

Effects of varying marijuana smoking profile on deposition of tar and absorption of CO and delta-9-THC.

We investigated the effects of previously observed differences in smoking technique for marijuana (M) versus tobacco (T) on the amount of inhaled tar, the percentage retention of inhaled tar in the lung, the pre- to postcigarette boost in blood carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and in serum delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC concentrations), and psychophysiologic responses to THC (increased heart rate and subjective "high"). Ten healthy, habitual smokers of M were studied on 6 separate days. On each day, subjects smoked a single M cigarette (approximately 900 mg, 1.24% delta-9-THC) using one of 6 differ

The effects of combinations of intranasal cocaine, smoked marijuana, and task performance on heart rate and blood pressure.

Eight adult male research volunteers received cocaine and marijuana, alone and in combination during experimental sessions. Following the determination of baseline cardiovascular indexes, a one-gram marijuana cigarette (0-2.9% delta 9-THC w/w) was smoked, and cocaine hydrochloride (4-96 mg) was inhaled five minutes after completion of marijuana smoking. Subjects performed a learning task 25 and 70 minutes after initiating marijuana smoking. Cocaine increased heart rate, which averaged 68 bpm under resting baseline conditions, by up to 15 bpm, marijuana increased heart rate by up to 27 bpm, and

Marijuana (Cannabis) Smoking Increases the Risk of Lung Cancer: Evidence from a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Marijuana (cannabis) use has become increasingly prevalent worldwide, raising concerns about its potential long-term health effects, particularly on the respiratory system. While tobacco smoking is a well-established risk factor for lung cancer, the association between cannabis use and lung cancer risk remains unclear and controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis of existing observational studies aimed to evaluate the potential relationship between marijuana use and the risk ofdeveloping lung cancer. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Web of S

Depression level, not pain severity, is associated with smoked medical marijuana dosage among chronic pain patients.

BACKGROUND: The use of medical marijuana (MM) for the treatment of chronic pain is rapidly growing in the United States and Europe; however there is concern regarding the specificity of its therapeutic effects and the motivation underlying its use. While research indicates that among chronic pain prescribed opioids, depression has been associated with increased opioid dosage (regardless of pain levels), the extent to which depression and pain each contribute to MM dose among chronic pain patients is yet unknown. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 209 chronic pain patients prescribed

Plasma delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in pregnant sheep and fetus after inhalation of smoke from a marijuana cigarette.

Seven pregnant ewes were prepared with open-ended tracheal T tubes and with catheters in maternal femoral artery and in central circulation of fetus. Several days postoperatively, at 129-132 days gestation, ewes inhaled smoke from one marijuana cigarette containing 3.19% delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC). Smoke was produced continuously in a hand-held chamber and delivered to the protruding arm of the tracheal tube. Samples of maternal and fetal blood were taken during the 8-10 minute smoking period and at intervals up to 24 hours. Delta-9-THC was detected in maternal plasma at 3 minu

Blood cannabinoids. I. Absorption of THC and formation of 11-OH-THC and THCCOOH during and after smoking marijuana.

delta 9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive constituent of marijuana, is rapidly transferred from lungs to blood during smoking. Oxidative metabolism of THC yields the active metabolite, 11-hydroxy-delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (11-OH-THC), and the inactive metabolite, 11-nor-9-carboxy-delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THCCOOH). Characterization of THC's absorption phase is important because of the rapidity with which THC penetrates the central nervous system to produce psychoactive effects. This study incorporated a highly automated procedure to sample blood and to capture rapid d

Common hyper-entropy patterns identified in nicotine smoking, marijuana use, and alcohol use based on uni-drug dependence cohorts.

Substance use disorders present similar behaviors and psychopathologies related to impaired decision making/inhibition control and information processing, suggesting common alterations in frontal and limbic brain areas. To test this hypothesis, we identified three uni-substance use cohorts with dependence to only one type of substance from the Human Connectome Project: marijuana dependence, nicotine dependence, and alcohol dependence. Fifty-nine marijuana uses, 34 nicotine smokers, 35 alcohol drinkers, and their age and sex-matched non-substance use controls were identified. We used brain entr

A549 cells exposed to a marijuana smoke extract affect mono-layer integrity related to oxidative stress state.

Marijuana smoke contains several toxic compounds that may induce dysregulation of oxidative mechanisms and barrier system in airway alveolar cells. This study aimed to assess whether marijuana smoke extract (MSE) modifies mono-layer integrity and antioxidant effects on the alveolar epithelial cells. A549 cells were exposed to MSE (0.1 to 5 μg/mL) or cannabinoid (+)-WIN 55,212-2 (WIN; 0.01 to 1 μM) for 24 h. Epithelial integrity and protein expression of claudin (Cl)-2, Cl-5, and occludin (Ocl) were evaluated by transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER), permeability assay, Western blot, imm
