The archibiome: extending engineered living materials to multiscale built environments.

The integration of living systems into architecture is advancing rapidly through developments in biotechnology, materials science, and design approaches grounded in regenerative principles. Engineered Living Materials (ELMs) and living artefacts demonstrate how microbial systems can be embedded within materials to enable responsiveness, metabolic activity, and adaptive functionality. However, current applications remain largely confined to discrete material components, overlooking the complex and dynamic microbial ecosystems already present within buildings. This opinion paper introduces the c

Tailored Compound Specific Carbon Isotopes Analysis in Heritage Science.

Radiocarbon dating has long been a cornerstone of archaeological science, offering a reliable method to determine the age of organic materials. Yet when applied to cultural heritage objects, traditional bulk analysis methods often fall short. Our research, supported by an SNSF Ambizione program, seeks to overcome these limitations by shifting the focus from bulk materials to individual molecules. We aim to untangle the mixed carbon sources encountered in heritage materials through compound specific approaches and further target the color of an object, i.e. natural organic dyes and pigments. Parallel-stacked aromatic molecules in hydrogen-bonded inorganic frameworks.

By precisely constructing molecules and assembling these into well-defined supramolecular structures, novel physical properties and functionalities can be realized, and new areas of the chemical space can be accessed. In both materials science and biology, a deeper understanding of the properties and exploitation of the reversible character of weak bonds and interactions, such as hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions, is anticipated to lead to the development of materials with novel properties and functionalities. We apply the hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) strategy to inorganic mater

Stereotypical thinking in the historiography of science and religion: creation and reception history of Reijer Hooykaas's Religion and the Rise of Modern Science.

Historians of science and religion have occasionally resorted to stereotypes, rejecting harmonious accounts without clear justifications. This article chronicles the creation and reception history of Religion and the Rise of Modern Science (1972), written by one so-called harmony promoting historian, Reijer Hooykaas (1906-1994). Over the decades, the book has received substantial criticism and praise. Based on our research on publications and archival materials - primarily comprising correspondence between Hooykaas, friends, colleagues, and publishers - we show that the multifaceted creation h

Periphery Modification of Tetrathiafulvalenes: Recent Development and Applications.

Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and its analogs are fascinating molecules in materials science based on their excellent electron-donating abilities. This personal account describes recent advances in the synthesis of TTF analogs for functional materials via the palladium-catalyzed modification of peripheries of TTF analogs. We first consider three types of molecules: fluorophore-TTF hybrid molecules, multi-redox systems, and an organic ligand for metal-organic frameworks. These molecules were successfully synthesized via Stille coupling or palladium-catalyzed direct C-H arylation and their structural

Sharing code.

Sharing code is becoming increasingly important in the wake of Open Science. In this review I describe and compare two popular code-sharing utilities, GitHub and Open Science Framework (OSF). GitHub is a mature, industry-standard tool but lacks focus towards researchers. In comparison, OSF offers a one-stop solution for researchers but a lot of functionality is still under development. I conclude by listing alternative lesser-known tools for code and materials sharing.

Research and innovation in soft matter: from de Gennes' legacy to future horizons.

Soft matter science-the science of complex condensed systems, characterized by abundant interfaces and the capacity for strong responses to modest perturbations, encompassing polymers, colloids, gels, surfactants, liquid crystals, and even less obvious subfields such as micro- and nanofluidics, where the role of interfaces becomes even more dominant due to extreme confinement-has long been a driving force behind industrial innovation. This can be explained, on the one hand, by the unique properties of flexibility, responsiveness, and adaptability of soft materials, and on the other hand, by it

Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are spherical, nano-sized proteoliposomes naturally secreted by Gram-negative bacteria. By incorporating parental membrane components and encapsulating diverse cellular cargos, OMVs function as potent mediators of biological communication. Despite inherent challenges, including low production yields, heterogeneous composition, and stochastic cargo loading, OMVs hold immense promise across broad biotechnological landscapes. In this review, we examine current advancements in OMV chassis engineering and functional diversification, providing a comprehensive synthetic

Promising new dental materials on the horizon.

The rapidly evolving field of materials science is providing dentistry with new treatments and alternatives. Calcium phosphate materials are under development for bone repair and replacement, root surface desensitization, and for caries prevention, by greatly increasing the remineralizing efficiency of fluorides. Composites fabricated from calcium phosphates and polymers may have application as pulp capping and cavity-basing materials. An alternative to mercury dental amalgam is being investigated; it is composed of silver powders that are cold-welded in the presence of a dilute acid. These ma

Unveiling Van Der Waals Forces and Associated Hamaker Constants Across the Nanomaterial Landscape With Advanced Atomic Force Microscopy.

Van der Waals (vdW) forces and the associated Hamaker constants underpin a broad spectrum of phenomena in biology, chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology, shaping processes from protein folding to the stability of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Achieving precise nanoscale quantification of these interactions remains a challenge, as conventional approaches lack the spatial resolution to resolve localized vdW effects in complex systems. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), with its nanometer sharp probe, has overcome many of these limitations, enabling high-resolution and nondestructive mea
