A closer look at orthopedic injuries associated with maxillofacial trauma.

Although orthopedic injury has been reported to be the most frequent injury associated with facial trauma, their relationship has not been sufficiently evaluated in the literature. To evaluate this relationship, we compared 263 patients with concomitant facial and orthopedic injuries with 2006 patients with facial injuries alone. The rate of associated orthopedic injuries was 11.5%. Motor vehicle accidents, falls, mandibular fractures, and Le Fort I fractures increased the chance of sustaining orthopedic injuries nearly 17-, 15-, 10-, 4.4-, and 4.5-fold, respectively. Most fractures occurred i

Pattern of maxillofacial and associated injuries in road traffic accidents.

BACKGROUND: Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Kenya. Victims may suffer multiple injuries including maxillofacial injuries. In most developing countries RTAs are the leading cause of maxillofacial injuries. In an attempt to reduce RTAs, the government of Kenya has enacted a legislation requiring mandatory fitting of speed governors and safety belts by passenger service vehicles. OBJECTIVE: To describe the characteristics and pattern of maxillofacial and associated injuries sustained in road traffic accidents. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTI

Volleyball-related Adult Maxillofacial Trauma Injuries: A NEISS Database Study.

INTRODUCTION: Craniofacial trauma among athletes of various sports has been well detailed and described. Despite this research, there is a dearth of literature describing the nature of facial trauma secondary to volleyball, despite its global popularity. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of volleyball-related facial trauma was conducted using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database from 2009 to 2018. Patient demographics (age, sex, and race), medical injury information (injury type and location), and disposition (observed and discharged, admitted, deceased) were

[Management of maxillofacial injuries in an emergency unit: our experience].

Maxillofacial injuries are relatively frequent. These may be complicated by cranioencephalic injuries or large facial wounds. We report our experience with the initial management of these lesions in an emergency unit setting. In 2007, we observed 105 patients with maxillofacial injuries. Maxillofacial injuries were associated with cranio-encephalic injuries in 69 patients (65.7%) and with polytrauma in 31(29.5%), while in 5 cases (4.8%) they were isolated. The main causes of trauma were motorcycle accidents (60%). All patients were treated in accordance with the Advanced Trauma Life Support gu

A review of paediatric maxillofacial injuries--a hospital-based study.

This study describes the patient profile with maxillofacial injuries attending a trauma unit at a children's hospital. A retrospective record-based analysis was carried out of children (less than 13 years of age) presenting with maxillofacial injuries from January 1991 to December 2001. Of the almost 90,000 trauma records, 13% of children presented with maxillofacial injuries. 60% were boys, with a quarter less than 3 years of age. Most presented with superficial lacerations and abrasions. The face (other than the facial bones) and the mouth/oropharnyx were most often injured. Injuries were ma

[Maxillofacial injuries in polytrauma. Results of a follow-up study].

Evaluation of the clinical charts of 86 patients with polytrauma, accompanied by fractures of the facial skull, and reexamination of 48 of these patients showed that with adequate therapy the concomitant lacerations do not influence the results of orofacial treatment. The complexity of the anatomical structures and of their functions necessitates early, differentiated, and interdisciplinary treatment. The special aspects and problems are presented and discussed.

Association of maxillofacial injuries with traumatic brain injuries in paediatric patients: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are among the most challenging conditions to accurately diagnose in children, and many TBIs are underdiagnosed. Patients with maxillofacial injury may be at risk for TBI. The objective of this study was to analyse the association between maxillofacial injuries and TBI among paediatric patients. Analysis of the factors associated with the occurrence of TBI among paediatric patients with maxillofacial injuries was the secondary objective. METHOD: This case-control study included 192 cases defined as paediatric patients with maxillofacial injuries and

Diagnosis and management of common maxillofacial injuries in the emergency department. Part 5: Dentoalveolar injuries.

Injuries to teeth can be very distressing for patients. Prompt treatment is essential. Injuries of the tooth bearing portion of the mandible are common and can even result after a relatively low impact trauma. The alveolus (tooth bearing portion of bone) and/or the tooth may be damaged. Segmental fractures involve multiple teeth and the supporting alveolar bone.

Maxillofacial injury from a leopard attack.

Although leopards are found worldwide, the incidence of leopard attack on humans is reported most often from India and Nepal. Usually, leopards avoid contact with people, but humans may occasionally be targeted as prey. Animal bite wounds may express as punctures, abrasions, tears, or avulsions. The force and bluntness of the teeth increase the probability of a crush injury with devitalized tissue. The clinical presentation and appropriate treatment of infected bite wounds vary according to extent of the wound. These wounds are considered complex injuries infected with a unique polymicrobial i

High-Energy Traumatic Maxillofacial Injury.

High-energy blunt or penetrating impact leads to great variability in facial injury patterns. Although the mechanism, pattern, and distribution of forces vary, the resultant damage to hard and soft tissues requires dedicated planning and execution of debridement and reconstructive procedures. This article evaluates the initial management of patients sustaining high-energy facial impact injuries resulting in one or more comminuted or displaced facial fractures, with accompanying severe facial lacerations and/or soft tissue defects and avulsion injuries. Seventy-three patients met the criteria f
