Mercury isotope signatures in contaminated sediments as a tracer for local industrial pollution sources.

Mass-dependent fractionation (MDF) and mass-independent fractionation (MIF) may cause characteristic isotope signatures of different mercury (Hg) sources and help understand transformation processes at contaminated sites. Here, we present Hg isotope data of sediments collected near industrial pollution sources in Sweden contaminated with elemental liquid Hg (mainly chlor-alkali industry) or phenyl-Hg (paper industry). The sediments exhibited a wide range of total Hg concentrations from 0.86 to 99 μg g(-1), consisting dominantly of organically-bound Hg and smaller amounts of sulfide-bound Hg. T

Riverine songbirds capture high levels of atmospheric mercury pollution from brown food webs in forests by mercury isotopic evidence.

Elevated methylmercury (MeHg) exposure poses significant risks to bird health, behavior, and reproduction. Still, the risk of MeHg exposure to forest birds, accounting for over 80 % of the world's bird species, is poorly understood. This study combines Hg isotopes and video analysis, aiming to assess MeHg exposure risks to a forest riverine songbird, the spotted forktail (Enicurus maculatus) from a remote subtropical montane forest. Noticeably, 83 % of feather MeHg concentrations of adult forktails exceeded 5000 ng g-1, a threshold level potentially impacting bird reproduction, and 50 % of fea

Mercury isotope compositions in seawater and marine fish revealed the sources and processes of mercury in the food web within differing marine compartments.

Anthropogenic activities and climate change have significantly increased mercury (Hg) levels in seawater. However, the processes and sources of Hg in differing marine compartments (e.g. estuary, marine continental shelf (MCS) or pelagic area) have not been well studied, which makes it difficult to understand Hg cycling in marine ecosystems. To address this issue, the total Hg (THg) concentration, methylmercury (MeHg) concentration and stable Hg isotopes were determined in seawater and fish samples collected from differing marine compartments of the South China Sea (SCS). The results showed tha

Isotopes and otolith chemistry provide insight into the biogeochemical history of mercury in southern flounder across a salinity gradient.

Methylmercury (MeHg) continues to pose a significant global health risk to wildlife and humans through fish consumption. Despite numerous advancements in understanding the mercury (Hg) cycle, questions remain about MeHg sources that accumulate in fish, particularly across transitional coastal areas, where harvest is prominent and Hg sources are numerous. Here we used a unique combination of Hg and nutrient isotopes, and otolith chemistry to trace the biogeochemical history of Hg and identify Hg sources that accumulated in an economically important fish species across Mobile Bay, Alabama (USA).

Aquatic methylmercury is a significant subsidy for terrestrial songbirds: Evidence from the odd mass-independent fractionation of mercury isotopes.

In contrast to aquatic food chains, knowledge of the origins and transfer of mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in terrestrial food chains is relatively limited, especially in songbirds. We collected soil, rice plants, aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, small wild fish, and resident songbird feathers from an Hg-contaminated rice paddy ecosystem for an analysis of stable Hg isotopes to clarify the sources of Hg and its transfer in songbirds and their prey. Significant mass-dependent fractionation (MDF, δ202Hg), but no mass-independent fractionation (MIF, ∆199Hg) occurred in the trophic t

An investigation of mercury sources in the Puyango-Tumbes River: Using stable Hg isotopes to characterize transboundary Hg pollution.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations and stable isotopes along with other trace metals were examined in environmental samples from Ecuador and Peru's shared Puyango-Tumbes River in order to determine the extent to which artisanal- and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Portovelo-Zaruma, Ecuador contributes to Hg pollution in the downstream aquatic ecosystem. Prior studies investigated the relationship between ASGM activities and downstream Hg pollution relying primarily on Hg concentration data. In this study, Hg isotopes revealed an isotopically heavy Hg signature with negligible mass independent fract

Methyl mercury and stable isotopes of nitrogen reveal that a terrestrial spider has a diet of emergent aquatic insects.

Terrestrial spiders transfer methyl mercury (MeHg) to terrestrial consumers such as birds, but how spiders become contaminated with MeHg is not well understood. In the present study, the authors used stable isotopes of nitrogen in combination with MeHg to determine the source of MeHg to terrestrial long-jawed orb weaver spiders (Tetragnatha sp). The authors collected spiders and a variety of other aquatic and terrestrial taxa from 10 shallow ponds in north Texas, USA. Based on MeHg concentrations and stable nitrogen isotope ratios, the authors identified distinct aquatic- and terrestrial-based

Mercury isotope fractionation during aqueous photoreduction of monomethylmercury in the presence of dissolved organic matter.

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a toxic pollutant that bioaccumulates in aquatic food webs. A major mechanism that limits MMHg uptake by biota is photodemethylation in surface waters. Recently, the extent of mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of Hg isotopes preserved in fish is being used to quantify this MMHg sink. Here, the effects of different types and amounts of DOM on Hg MIF during MMHg photodemethylation were investigated to assess how variable MIF enrichment factors may be with respect to changing DOM binding sites. From experiments conducted with varying amounts of reduced organic sulfu

Species-specific isotope tracking of mercury uptake and transformations by pico-nanoplankton in an eutrophic lake.

The present study aims to explore the bioaccumulation and biotic transformations of inorganic (iHg) and monomethyl mercury (MMHg) by natural pico-nanoplankton community from eutrophic lake Soppen, Switzerland. Pico-nanoplankton encompass mainly bacterioplankton, mycoplankton and phytoplankton groups with size between 0.2 and 20 μm. Species-specific enriched isotope mixture of 199iHg and 201MMHg was used to explore the accumulation, the subcellular distribution and transformations occurring in natural pico-nanoplankton sampled at 2 different depths (6.6 m and 8.3 m). Mercury Isotope Fractionation during the Photochemical Reduction of Hg(II) Coordinated with Organic Ligands.

The photochemical reduction of Hg(II) is an important pathway in the environmental Hg cycle because it competes with Hg methylation and potentially limits the formation of bioaccumulative methylmercury. Hg stable isotope systematics have proven to be an effective tool for investigating the transport, transformation, and bioaccumulation of Hg. The dominant cause of mass independent isotope fractionation (MIF) of Hg in nature is the photochemical reduction of various species of Hg(II). However, it is difficult to fully interpret Hg stable isotope signatures due to the lack of mechanistic informa

Tracing monomethylmercury origins in planktivorous migratory fish in the coastal East China Sea: Evidences from mercury and carbon stable isotopes.

Under strong impacts of land-sea interactions, estuarine and coastal ecosystems exhibit large spatial variations in geochemical properties and monomethylmercury (MMHg) distribution, which may induce habitat-dependent MMHg bioaccumulation to migratory fish that remains unclear. This study investigates MMHg origins in two planktivorous migratory fish with distinct habitats (anadromous Coilia nasus and oceanodromous Scomber japonicus) in the East China Sea (ECS), based on the seasonal and inter-tissue variations of stable isotopes of MMHg (especially Δ199HgMMHg) and carbon (δ13C) in fish and site

Mercury isotope dynamics in marine fish during bioaccumulation and excretion: Temporal responses across tissues.

Mercury (Hg) is a potent neurotoxin that bioaccumulates through aquatic food webs. In fish, Hg excretion regulates Hg burden, yet whether it induces tissue-specific Hg isotope fractionation remains unclear. To address this question, we conducted a controlled feeding experiment exposing starry flounders (Platichthys stellatus) to diets amended with inorganic mercury (IHg; 4 and 25 μg/g) or methylmercury (MeHg; 1 μg/g) for 4 weeks (bioaccumulation), followed by 16 weeks of Hg-unamended feeding (excretion). Total Hg and MeHg concentrations, together with Hg isotope ratios (δ202Hg, Δ199Hg) were me

Evidence of Mercury Methylation and Demethylation by the Estuarine Microbial Communities Obtained in Stable Hg Isotope Studies.

Microbial activity is a critical factor controlling methylmercury formation in aquatic environments. Microbial communities were isolated from sediments of two highly mercury-polluted areas of the Tagus Estuary (Barreiro and Cala do Norte) and differentiated according to their dependence on oxygen into three groups: aerobic, anaerobic, and sulphate-reducing microbial communities. Their potential to methylate mercury and demethylate methylmercury was evaluated through incubation with isotope-enriched Hg species (199HgCl and CH₃201HgCl). The results showed that the isolated microbial communities

Tracing maternal transfer of methylmercury in the sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) with an enriched mercury stable isotope.

Maternal transfer of methylmercury (MeHg) to eggs is an important exposure pathway for developing offspring. However, our understanding of this process is limited, particularly in estuarine fish. We conducted a 91-day chronic laboratory exposure of Cyprinodon variegatus to four concentrations of dietary MeHg ranging from 0.04 to 9.90 μg g(-1) dw. Juvenile fish were fed a preoogenesis MeHg diet for 28 days, after which the diet was switched to a diet enriched with Me(199)Hg, spanning the period of oogenesis, allowing us to differentiate between mercury stored in female tissues and mercury assim

Isotope fractionation of mercury during its photochemical reduction by low-molecular-weight organic compounds.

Photochemical reduction of Hg(II) by various low-molecular-weight organic compounds (LMWOC) was investigated to evaluate the effect of specific functional groups that are typically encountered in natural dissolved organic matters (DOM) on the photoreactivity and isotope fractionation of Hg. LMWOC with reduced sulfur functional groups (e.g., cysteine, glutathione) resulted in slower photochemical reduction of Hg(II) than those without reduced sulfur groups (e.g., serine, oxalic acid). Reduction rate constants were specifically determined for two contrasting LMWOC: dl-serine (0.640 h(-1)) and l-

Equilibrium mercury isotope fractionation between dissolved Hg(II) species and thiol-bound Hg.

Stable Hg isotope ratios provide a new tool to trace environmental Hg cycling. Thiols (-SH) are the dominant Hg-binding groups in natural organic matter. Here, we report experimental and computational results on equilibrium Hg isotope fractionation between dissolved Hg(II) species and thiol-bound Hg. Hg(II) chloride and nitrate solutions were equilibrated in parallel batches with varying amounts of thiol resin resulting in different fractions of thiol-bound and free Hg. Mercury isotope ratios in both fractions were analyzed by multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC

Bioaccumulation of mercury along continuous fauna trophic levels in the Yellow River Estuary and adjacent sea indicated by nitrogen stable isotopes.

Mercury (Hg), and its organic forms, are some of the most hazardous elements, with strong toxicity, persistence, and biological accumulation in marine organisms. Hg accumulation in continuous trophic levels (TL) in marine food chains remains unclear. In this study, individual invertebrate and fish samples collected from the Yellow River Estuary adjacent sea were grouped into continuous TL ranges, and the bioaccumulations of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were analyzed. The trophic magnification factor in invertebrates and fish was 1.40 and 1.72 for THg, and 2.56 and 2.17 for MeHg, ind

Investigation of mercury-containing proteins by enriched stable isotopic tracer and size-exclusion chromatography hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma-isotope dilution mass spectrometry.

In order to investigate trace mercury-containing proteins in maternal rat and their offspring, a method of enriched stable isotopic tracer (196Hg and 198Hg) combined with size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled to inductively coupled plasma-isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ICP-IDMS) was developed. Prior to the analysis, 196Hg- and 198Hg-enriched methylmercury was administrated to the pregnant rats. Then the mercury-containing proteins in serum and brain cytosol of the dam and pup rats were separated by size-exclusion columns and the mercury was detected by ICP-MS. The ICP-MS spectrogram

Chemical structures of dissolved organic matter control mercury isotopic fractionation during methylmercury photodegradation.

Methylmercury (MeHg) photodegradation can induce mass-dependent (MDF) and mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of mercury (Hg) isotopes, providing useful information for fingerprinting the transformation and transport of Hg species. However, Hg isotopic fractionation during dissolved organic matter (DOM)-mediated MeHg photodegradation remains poorly understood, constraining environmental application of this isotopic tracer. In this study, several low-molecular-weight aromatic thiols were selected to investigate the influence of DOM chemical structures on Hg isotope fractionation during MeHg ph

Mercury compound-specific stable isotope fractionation in high-altitude lake ecosystems of the Bolivian Altiplano.

A combination of mercury (Hg) speciation and compound-specific stable isotope analyses was employed to trace the origin and fate of monomethylmercury (MMHg) in the high-altitude food webs of Lakes Titicaca (TTKK) and Uru Uru (UU). Significant MMHg biomagnification was observed, with concentrations reaching up to 2 μg.g-1 Hg in top predators. Hg isotopes lake-specific trends were identified in relation to trophic position (δ15N) and MMHg fractions. In particular, Δ199MMHg increased from 0 ‰ in UU epiphytic biofilm to ≈2 ‰ and ≈4 ‰ in UU and TTKK piscivorous fish, respectively. Both δ202MMHg and
