Does molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) affect only permanent first molars and incisors? New observations on permanent second molars.

BACKGROUND: The second permanent molar plays an important role when considering extraction of first permanent molars severely affected by molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH). AIM: To assess the association between MIH and enamel hypomineralization of the second permanent molars in terms of presence and severity. DESIGN: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, permanent teeth were evaluated in 453 patients between the ages of 13 and 16 at a dental clinic, using intraoral photographs. A calibrated examiner classified enamel hypomineralization using the MIH index and dental caries exper

Minimally invasive management of molar-incisor hypomineralization using semidirect restorations: a case series.

Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) poses clinical management challenges due to enamel fragility and hypersensitivity, and treatment is often more complicated in pediatric patients, who may show less cooperation. This case series describes a minimally invasive restorative approach with a semidirect occlusal replica technique that uses high-viscosity glass ionomer cement (GIC) to manage MIH-affected molars. Three children, aged 8 to 12 years, who had severe MIH affecting permanent first molars were treated using the semidirect replica technique. The procedures were focused on preserving tiss

Association of Labor-Related Medications With Molar Hypomineralization: An Experimental Study in Rats.

Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between administering medications used during delivery and molar hypomineralization (MH) development in rats. The hypothesis was that exposure to specific drugs used to induce childbirth could affect dental mineralization, potentially leading to MH. Methods: An experimental study was conducted using four pregnant Sprague Dawley (SD) albino rats. The rats were divided into four groups: one rat received 0.143 mg/Kg of dinoprostone, 0.714 mg/Kg of pethidine, and 0.036 mg/Kg of haloperidol; another rat received 0.143 mg/Kg of dinoprostone alone; a third rat wa…

Association between multiple genetic polymorphisms and molar-incisor hypomineralization: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Certain genes present variants associated with molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) pathogenesis, especially genes encoding enamel development proteins related to morphogenesis, immune response, and hormone transcription and reception, demonstrating that MIH is likely a gene-environment issue with multiple genes having small individual effects. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and MIH. METHODOLOGY: A sample of 90 children with MIH and 262 children without MIH were included in this study. Calibrated examiners diagnosed MIH (Ka

Dental caries prevention in pediatric patients with molar incisor hypomineralization: a scoping review.

This scoping review aims to summarize the available evidence on strategies employed in preventing caries in patients with molar incisor hypo-mineralization (MIH). MIH refers to an enamel defect involving opacities, and sometimes post-eruptive degradation due to enamel porosity; resulting in outcomes ranging from a mild atypical caries to severe coronary destruction. A systematic review was conducted for literature in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Epistemonikos and Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS). The search was aimed at studies published between January 201

Development of undergraduate students' diagnostic accuracy for the classification of molar incisor hypomineralization.

INTRODUCTION: One of the major difficulties with respect to molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is its classification and differentiation from other enamel development defects (EDDs). The aim of this study was to evaluate diagnostic accuracy in dental students to classify MIH as well as its differentiation from other EDDs by combining conventional theoretical classes and e-learning-assisted pre-clinical practices. METHODS: In this one-group pre-test and post-test study, 59 second-year students assessed 115 validated photographs using the MIH Index on the Moodle learning platform. This inde

Comparative analysis of oral microbiome in molar-incisor-hypomineralization vs healthy age-matched controls.

UNLABELLED: Molar-incisor-hypomineralization (MIH) is one of the most challenging dental diseases in children. While the association of oral microbiomes with caries and periodontitis has been studied thoroughly, limited data on the microbial composition in MIH and its clinical significance exist. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare the supragingival plaque microbiome between children and adolescents affected by MIH and a healthy age-matched control group. Ninety-five patients aged 7-17 years were recruited at the Department of Conservative Dentistry, Heidelberg University Hospital. The

Therapeutic Alternatives in a Pediatric Patient With Molar Incisor Hypomineralization: A Clinical Case Report.

A notable increase in the incidence of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) has been observed in recent years. This trend may be attributed to a combination of factors, including increased public awareness, improved diagnostic techniques, and a greater emphasis on early childhood oral health. Clinically, MIH initially presents as white-to-brown opacities without enamel loss, progressing to post-eruptive breakdown in severe cases, often accompanied by hypersensitivity and atypical caries that may lead to pulp involvement. MIH treatment requires a correct clinical assessment of the tooth as th
