Contact with plants can cause phototoxic or rarely photoallergic reactions. Phototoxic dermatitis (photophytodermatitis) occurs after contact or ingestion of plants containing furocumarins i.e. psoralens and followed by sun exposure. Skin lesions develop usually after 24-48 hours with erythema, bulla formation, itch or pain, followed by a long lasting hyperpigmentation. Furocumarins can be linear i.e. psoralens (5-MOP, 8-MOP), or angular like angelicin and pimpinellin. Their binding to DNA causes cellular damage. This can happen in florists, gardeners, farmers, horticulturists, food handlers,

Anthracnose, caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Penz. & Sacc., is the most limiting fungal disease of mango and papaya crops in Colombia. The in vivo and in vitro activity against C. gloeosporioides of the extracts from sawdust of Brosimum rubescens Taub. (Moraceae) was evaluated. The extracts of less polarity (n-hexane and dichloromethane) displayed the greatest inhibitory effects. Then, the coumarins xanthyletin (2.74 % d.w.) and 7-demethylsuberosin (2.19 % d.w.) were isolated from these extracts. The compound 7-demethylsuberosin displayed a strong in vivo and in vit

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity reactions to ingestion of figs (Ficus carica) and mulberries (Morus nigra and Morus alba) are considered uncommon and have never been reported as occurring in the same patient.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hypersensitivity to figs and mulberries can induce cross-allergy.
METHODS: We describe 3 cases of associated fig and mulberry allergy in 3 patients with multiple sensitizations to food allergens (mostly fruit) and airborne allergens. The presence of specific IgE was investigated by skin prick tests and radioallergosorbent tests.
RESULTS: The 3 patients had

Ficus benjamina (FB), the weeping fig, belonging to the Moracea family, is now widely used as an indoor ornamental plant in houses and offices. Its latex can be responsible of IgE allergies : rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma, angiooedema, pruritus, anaphylactic shock. In some occupations such as gardeners, caretakers of plants, it can induce a contact urticaria. Most of these patients are atopics. We describe a case of non-occupational, indoor related rhinoconjunctivitis in a non-atopic patient. Prick-test and RAST to FB latex were positive and removal of the ficus plant resolved their symptoms con
