Examination of 2D frontal and sagittal markerless motion capture: Implications for markerless applications.

This study examined if occluded joint locations, obtained from 2D markerless motion capture (single camera view), produced 2D joint angles with reduced agreement compared to visible joints, and if 2D frontal plane joint angles were usable for practical applications. Fifteen healthy participants performed over-ground walking whilst recorded by fifteen marker-based cameras and two machine vision cameras (frontal and sagittal plane). Repeated measures Bland-Altman analysis illustrated that markerless standard deviation of bias and limits of agreement for the occluded-side hip and knee joint angle

Using a Markerless Motion Capture System to Identify Preinjury Differences in Functional Assessments.

Functional assessments identify biomechanical issues which may indicate risk for injury and can be used to monitor functional recovery after an injury or surgery. Although the gold standard to assess functional movements is marker-based motion capture systems, these are cost prohibitive and have high participant burden. As such, this study was conducted to determine if a markerless motion capture system could detect preinjury differences in functional movements between those who did and did not experience a noncontact lower extremity injury (NCLEI). A three-dimensional markerless motion captur

The effect of camera configuration on multi-camera markerless motion capture for biomechanical analysis.

Markerless motion capture technology, such as Theia3D, enables human movement data to be collected outside traditional laboratory environments. However, the extent to which changes in camera configuration influence markerless kinematic output remains underreported. This study evaluated the effect of camera configuration on Theia3D-calculated kinematic parameters during walking, running, and jumping. Ten healthy adults completed five trials of walking, running and counter movement jumps in two volume sizes (10 x 8 m and 6 x 4 m). Movements were captured with eighteen Sony-RX0II synchronised vid

A Motion Capture Study to Measure the Feeling of Synchrony in Romantic Couples and in Professional Musicians.

The feeling of synchrony is fundamental for most social activities and prosocial behaviors. However, little is known about the behavioral correlates of this feeling and its modulation by intergroup differences. We previously showed that the subjective feeling of synchrony in subjects involved in a mirror imitation task was modulated by objective behavioral measures, as well as contextual factors such as task difficulty and duration of the task performance. In the present study, we extended our methodology to investigate possible interindividual differences. We hypothesized that being in a roma

VRrec: A zero-coding open-source VR body-motion capture tool for behavioral research.

We present VRrec, an open-source, motion-tracking and recording tool for PC-based virtual reality (VR). The tool addresses a persistent gap in VR-based experimental research by enabling real-time capture of head, hand, and optional body-tracking data without the need to code. VRrec runs discreetly in the background, collecting positional and rotational data as researchers engage participants with third-party VR applications. This design lets researchers use flexible paradigms that leverage off-the-shelf VR content, eliminating the need to build or modify custom software. However, because VRrec

Optimizing Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation Intensity for Overactive Bladder Using a Motion Capture System.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a significant global health issue. The standard percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) protocol uses maximal-tolerance stimulation and causes discomfort and other side effects. This study aimed to optimize stimulation intensity using a motion capture (MoCap) system, thereby enhancing therapy safety and personalization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a single short-term stimulation session, the stimulator was fixed to the cat's (four males and four females) medial malleolus and the inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor to the ipsilateral

Brain activity related to individuated finger movement demonstrated by simultaneous motion capture and fMRI.

INTRODUCTION: The ability to move fingers independently is essential for skilled hand use and relies on both biomechanical constraints and neural control. This study analysed finger independence and associated brain activation during individuated finger movements using simultaneous recordings of 3D kinematics and functional MRI. METHOD: Twenty-five right-handed persons (age 62.3 ± 8.2 years) performed flexion-extension movements with individual fingers repeated for each hand during fMRI acquisition. Finger independence was quantified using a 3D motion capture-based Individuation Index (II), a

Examining the concurrent validity of markerless motion capture in dual-athlete team sports movements.

Markerless motion capture systems could help collect kinematic data in team sports. However, the validity of these systems when measuring multiple individuals simultaneously has yet to be determined. The current study aims to assess the concurrent validity of full-body kinematics during dyadic sports tasks of a markerless compared to a marker-based motion capture system. Twelve couples performed three dyadic movements: the walk high-five, dribble simulation, and double sidestep. Movements were simultaneously recorded with both systems. For each movement, the segment orientations, joint angles

Evaluation of 3D Markerless Motion Capture System Accuracy during Skate Skiing on a Treadmill.

In this study, we developed a deep learning-based 3D markerless motion capture system for skate skiing on a treadmill and evaluated its accuracy against marker-based motion capture during G1 and G3 skating techniques. Participants performed roller skiing trials on a skiing treadmill. Trials were recorded with two synchronized video cameras (100 Hz). We then trained a custom model using DeepLabCut, and the skiing movements were analyzed using both DeepLabCut-based markerless motion capture and marker-based motion capture systems. We statistically compared joint centers and joint vector angles b

Comparison of Azure Kinect overground gait spatiotemporal parameters to marker based optical motion capture.

BACKGROUND: Instrumented measurement of spatiotemporal parameters during walking can provide valuable information on an individual's overall function and health. Efficient, inexpensive, and accurate measurement of overground walking spatiotemporal parameters would be a critical component of providing point-of-care assessments of gait function, concussion recovery, fall-risk, and cognitive decline. Depth cameras combined with skeleton pose tracking algorithms, such as the Microsoft Kinect with body tracking software, have been used to measure walking spatiotemporal parameters. However, the abil

Kinematic Analysis of Smiles in the Healthy Pediatric Population Using 3-Dimensional Motion Capture.

INTRODUCTION: Facial normalcy, as measured with 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional photographs, has been documented in the healthy pediatric population. However, static images convey far from a complete representation of an individual's daily interactions with peers. Craniofacial surgery induces changes to soft or osseous tissues and thereby affects dynamic facial expression. To-date, there has not been rigorous, dynamic quantification of normal facial expression. In this study, we used 4-dimensional (4D) imaging to assess the facial expression of healthy children to provide a normative reference

Assessment of spinal mobility in ankylosing spondylitis using a video-based motion capture system.

This paper describes the use of a video-based motion capture system to assess spinal mobility in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The aim of the study is to assess reliability of the system comparing it with conventional metrology in order to define and analyze new measurements that reflect better spinal mobility. A motion capture system (UCOTrack) was used to measure spinal mobility in forty AS patients and twenty healthy subjects with a marker set defining 33 3D measurements, some already being used in conventional metrology. Radiographic studies were scored using the modified Stok

Repeatability and agreement of planar lumbar range of motion measured by dynamic fluoroscopy and optical motion capture in an ovine cadaveric model.

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar range of motion is an important biomechanical parameter for understanding spinal function. However, the repeatability, measurement error, and between-method agreement of dynamic fluoroscopy and optical motion capture remain insufficiently characterized in controlled cadaveric spine testing. METHODS: Planar lumbar kinematics were measured using dynamic fluoroscopy within a dynamic X-ray system (DXRS) and optical motion capture with bone-fixed markers (OMCS) in six fresh-frozen ovine lumbar spine specimens, each comprising a continuous L1-L5 segment, during quasi-static fle

Video-Based Motion Capture Smartphone Apps for Testing Human Motor Performance Skills: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Good motor performance skills (MPS) are relevant in all stages of life. Higher MPS are associated with enhanced cognitive abilities and physical and mental health. The assessment of MPS is important to identify deficits in MPS at an early stage and to implement interventions to address these deficits. One method to assess MPS is through marker-based motion capture in a laboratory setting with multiple cameras. However, this approach is expensive and time-consuming, making it impractical, for example, in large-scale studies for MPS assessment. Recent advancements (eg, artificial int
