Cycloheximide and streptovitacin A administered in vivo to rats display a similar dual effect on the labelling of soluble liver proteins by valine-14C, and result in a similar enhancement of liver uridine kinase activity. On the other hand, in pylorus-ligated rats, both antibiotics markedly depress gastric secretion, acid output, and the level of mucoproteins and proteolytic activity in secreted juice. Streptovitacin A on a molar basis was in all cases 5 approximately 8 times more effective than cycloheximide.

Mucoproteinuria, determined by Bugard's semiquantitative method, revealed values of 100-350 mg/24 h in common scarlet fever and of 300-882 mg/24 h in scarlet fever complicated by early nephritis, pseudorheumatism and acute diffuse glomerulonephritis. The possible influence of stepronine lysine salt, a mucolytic agent, on human gastric mucus was investigated in ten healthy volunteers. Stepronine was administered by the oral route for ten days at a dose of 810 mg daily. Neither the total amount of mucoproteins in the gastric juice nor the quality of gastric mucus secretion (as assessed by a 'mucoprotective index') were altered after treatment with the bronchial secretolytic. 68 cases of non-SCLG were investigated by immunohisto-chemical technique to detect ectopic hormone producing cells and to study the heterogeneity of non-SCLC. A new, original molecule, nesosteine, modified both the rheology and the production of tracheobronchial mucus in rabbits. The drug highly significantly reduced the viscosity of tracheobronchial mucus in animals made bronchitic by H2SO4 aerosol and markedly increased mucoproduction in healthy animals. Protein-Bound Fucose (PBF) content in sera from normal persons and untreated lepromatous or near lepromatous leprosy patients was measured and statistically analysed. Normal serum gave a mean value of 8.15 +/- 2.7 mg% and the sera of leprosy patients gave a value of 13.3 +/- 3.38%. The fucose contents in the glycoprotein and mucoprotein fractions were determined and found to increase in untreated leprosy patients. The values for ratio of fucose to protein also were found to be high in the sera of patients studied.

The influence of omeprazole treatment on gastric mucus secretion in man was examined in two separate studies. 24 outpatients with endoscopic duodenitis but normal gastric mucosa were treated under double-blind conditions with either omeprazole 20 mg o.m. or placebo for four weeks.
