Objective Outcome Measures in Nasal Valve Repair and Nasal Obstruction.

The diagnosis of nasal valve compromise (NVC) is clinical. However, objective evaluation of the nasal airway can support the clinical diagnosis of NVC and quantify the derangement produced by NVC in nasal airflow and in nasal airway resistance. Computational fluid dynamics analysis can quantify disturbances of the normal nasal airway conditions and, furthermore, localize these disturbances to the nasal valve. Objective evaluation of the nasal airway is useful to assess the results of surgery addressing the nasal valve, being able to quantify the improvement in nasal airflow, nasal airway resis

Newborn nasal obstruction due to congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal obstruction is an important condition that can lead to severe respiratory distress in newborns. There are several differential diagnoses, and one of them is congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis (CNPAS). CNPAS is a rare case of respiratory distress caused by excessive growth of the nasal process of the maxilla and leads to narrowing of the anterior third of the nasal cavity. Diagnosis, associated anomalies, and treatment strategies are reviewed by the following presentation of two cases. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of infants diagnosed with CNPAS. The pati

Headaches associated with nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum.

A deviated nasal septum not only can cause a blocked nose, but may also be associated with headaches. This study evaluates the nature of these headaches, the effect of submucous resection of the nasal septum, and the factors associated with postoperative headache relief. Deviated nasal septa were corrected by submucous resection in 99 men and 17 women. Patients were studied at 4 to 48 months (mean 18 months) postoperatively. Fifty-five of the 116 patients studied (47.4%) had preoperative recurring headaches. Thirty-five of the 55 patients with headaches (63.6%) experienced relief (complete or

The Relationship Between Lateral Nasal Wall Collapse and Nasal Obstruction.

OBJECTIVES: In clinical practice, lateral nasal wall collapse during forced inspiration is widely regarded as a sign of nasal obstruction or criterion indicating nasal valve surgery. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the degree of lateral nasal wall collapse and subjective nasal obstruction. In addition, factors related to lateral nasal wall collapse were also investigated. METHODS: In this study, lateral nasal wall collapse is determined by the degree of lateral nasal wall triangle (LNWT) area reduction on frontal view during forced inspiration compared to quiet inspiratio

Anatomy and Physiology of Nasal Obstruction.

Nasal obstruction is a common presenting symptom to clinicians and affects up to one-third of the population. There are several factors that cause nasal obstruction, including anatomic, physiologic, and pathophysiologic factors. The anatomy and physiology of nasal obstruction is complicated and is influenced by patency of nasal passages, mucociliary function, airflow receptors, autonomic function, and degree of mucosal inflammation. Common anatomic causes include internal nasal valve stenosis/collapse, septal deviation, and turbinate hypertrophy. Common physiologic causes include sinonasal inf

Bilateral Nasoalveolar Cyst Causing Nasal Obstruction.

Nasoalveolar cysts, which originate from epithelial remnants of nasolacrimal duct, are nonodontogenic soft tissue lesions of the upper jaw. These cysts are thought to be developmental and are presented with fullness in the upper lip and nose, swelling on the palate, and sometimes nasal obstruction. Because of cosmetic problems, they are often diagnosed at an early stage. These lesions are mostly revealed unilaterally but also can be seen on both sides. In this case report, a patient who complained of nasal obstruction and then diagnosed with bilateral nasoalveolar cysts and treated by sublabia

Nasal obstruction in sleep-disordered breathing.

It has been 30 years since Cottle suggested that "sleeping patterns are in great measure dependent on good nasal function" [1]. During this time, we have identified the OSAHS and related forms of sleep-disordered breathing such as UARS, and better appreciate the clinical sequelae of recurrent arousals and sleep fragmentation. Yet the exact role that obstructed nasal breathing plays in the pathogenesis of such sleep disorders remains presumptive, and robust clinical studies to corroborate this theory remain elusive; however, patients who may benefit most from correction of nasal obstruction as

[Nasal obstruction. Physiology, etiology and review].

Nasal obstruction is a major epidemiologic medical problem. The cost of its medical and surgical treatment is considerable. The frequency of the symptoms and their usual benign course often lead the physician to pay little attention to them. Occasionally, life-threatening problems, such as Wegener's granulomatosis may first present as nasal obstruction. Frequently, nasal obstruction deteriorates the quality of life by causing serious discomfort and by altering with the sense of smell and taste.

Nasal obstruction in the pediatric patient.

Early signals of pathologic causes of nasal obstruction in childhood may pass unnoticed by the unsuspecting physician because these signals mimic innocuous problems such as the common cold, sinusitis, and allergic rhinitis. The hope for early recognition of the more serious causes of nasal obstruction in children depends upon a high degree of suspicion. Some of the common and uncommon causes of nasal obstruction are enumerated by categorizing the possible etiologies into congenital, traumatic, iatrogenic, inflammatory, and neoplastic classifications. With a systematic approach that utilizes hi

Office Treatments for Nasal Airway Obstruction.

Nasal airway obstruction (NAO) is a common complaint affecting millions worldwide. It significantly impacts quality of life, leading to symptoms such as difficulty breathing, congestion, sleep disturbance, and impaired sense of smell. Historically, treatment of NAO focused on surgical intervention within a hospital setting. Office-based treatments have revolutionized the management of NAO. Early office-based treatments involved cautery and radiofrequency ablation of the nasal mucosa. Careful patient selection, thorough comprehensive evaluation and appropriate techniques, is essential for achie

Scar Hypertrophy Causing Nasal Obstruction Reconstruction.

Reconstructive surgery plays a crucial role in addressing congenital defects, posttraumatic deformities, and related conditions, providing transformative solutions for patients. Its primary goal is to restore or enhance damaged tissue structures, improving both functionality and appearance, and empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Take, for example, a female patient who experienced a nasal infection after a cat bite. Despite initial treatment, she developed severe scar contractures and excessive scar tissue within her nostrils, significantly impacting her quality of life. Seeking a

Non-Surgical Devices for Nasal Obstruction.

Nasal obstruction is a common presenting complaint in most otolaryngology practices. A reduction of nasal airflow can contribute to exercise intolerance, snoring, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and an overall decreased quality of life. When medical management for non-anatomical issues fails to resolve the obstruction, surgeries targeting nasal obstruction-namely septorhinoplasty and/or inferior turbinate reduction are often considered. A frequently overlooked alternative for these patients is the wide array of non-surgical and minimally invasive appliances available to address nasal obstructio

Surgical Management of Nasal Airway Obstruction.

The management and diagnosis of nasal airway obstruction requires an understanding of the form and function of the nose. Nasal airway obstruction can be structural, physiologic, or a combination of both. Anatomic causes of airway obstruction include septal deviation, internal nasal valve narrowing, external nasal valve collapse, and inferior turbinate hypertrophy. Thus, the management of nasal air obstruction must be selective and carefully considered. The goal of surgery is to address the deformity and not just enlarge the nasal cavity.
