PURPOSE: Numerous methods have been utilized to repair nasal septal perforation with varying degrees of success; however, no consensus has been reached on nasoseptal perforation repair. Here, the authors describe a surgical method based on human dermal allograft (Surederm, Hans Biomed Corp. Korea) for the repair of nasal septal perforations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients with a nasal septal perforation were included in this study. The causes of these septal perforations included previous nasal surgery, trauma, foreign body (button battery), and idiopathy. There were several sites of

BACKGROUND: A nasal septum perforation often leads to considerable complaints like nasal obstruction, crusting, epistaxis or whistling. Up to now there is no certain knowledge about the airflow pattern in noses with septal perforations.
METHOD: We performed fluid dynamic experiments on functional nasal models (so-called modified Mink boxes). We investigated the flow pattern in models with septal perforations, different in size and location and in combination with and without septal deviations.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We have found no essential influence of the location of perforation on the

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We investigated the effect of intranasal topical curcumin on nasal septum mucosa wound healing in a nasal septal perforation model produced in rabbits.
STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study.
METHODS: Fourteen male New Zealand rabbits were included in the study. For each rabbit, 5-mm-diameter circular perforations were created at 5 mm away from the columella to the nasal septum. Curcumin (study group) and saline (control group) were administered intranasally once daily for 10 days. At the end of the 10th day, the animals were sacrificed and the nasal septum specimens were se

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a chronic, progressive, granulomatous inflammation of the aorta and its major branches, and is diagnosed often only in the late stage. The late phase of disease is characterized by variety of ischemic symptoms due to stenosis or occlusion of the major arteries. Although major neurological events such as stroke, transient ischemic attacks, and seizures due to either progressive arterial stenosis or hypertension, are reported to occur in one-fifth of the patients, nasal septal perforation has not been previously reported. Herein we present a young woman with TA who w

OBJECTIVE: To assess the correlation of sinonasal symptoms and quality of life with size and position of nasal septal perforation (NSP).
METHOD: This is a prospective observational study in a tertiary referral center involving adult patients presented with NSP. The Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) and its clinico-psychometric domains were analyzed, including additional NSP-specific symptoms (nasal crusting, epistaxis, and whistling noise during nasal breathing). The size of NSP was measured radiologically by calculating the area in cm2 and anteroposterior (AP) diameter. Position of perfor

INTRODUCTION: The anterior ethmoidal artery (AEA) flap has been demonstrated to be a reliable option for endoscopic repair of symptomatic nasal septal perforations. The use of fresh frozen cadaveric rib cartilage has been described as a safe alternative graft for rhinoplasty procedures.
GOAL: The aim of this study was to discuss our initial outcomes of use of cadaveric rib cartilage graft in combination with the AEA flap in endoscopic nasal septal perforation repair.
METHODS: A single institution retrospective case series of all consecutive patients who underwent repair of nasal septal perfo

OBJECTIVE: Septoplasty has been reported as the most common cause of the septal perforation. The interposition of the graft materials between the flaps at the site of the tear may be helpful to decrease the likelihood of septal perforation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of TnR Nasal Mesh on the prevention of septal perforation following septoplasty.
METHODS: Among 46 patients had septal perforation after septoplasty, 35 patients were treated with TnR Nasal Mesh and 11 with autologous septal cartilage for bilateral mucosal tears at the corresponding area of the nasa

The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are used to evaluate the physiological function of the nose. We evaluated the aerodynamics of the nasal cavity in a patient with septal perforation (SP), pre- and postvirtual repair. Three-dimensional nasal models were reconstructed, and then a wide range of the pressure drops and flow rates were analyzed. The airflow velocity is higher in the central region and is lower around the boundary of the SP. The air velocity in the SP increases as the pressure drop increases. Furthermore, at the anterior part of the SP, the shear stress is higher in the upper pa

We report a case of pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) associated with nasal septal perforation, pharyngeal ulcers and IgA paraproteinemia. A 28-year-old woman first developed painful undermined ulcers on her perianal, inguinal and axillary areas when she was 22 years old. Histological findings from the cutaneous ulcers showed dermal and epidermal infiltrate of neutrophils, which was compatible with PG. Laboratory examinations did not detect any associations of systemic diseases other than polyclonal IgA paraproteinemia. Nasal fiberscopy revealed septal perforation and multiple ulcers on her pharynx. T

Perforation of the nasal septum remains an actual problem. The success of surgical closure of perforation of the nasal septum depends not only on the surgeon's skill, but also on the degree of disturbance of the nasal cavity physiology. Traditionally, CFD studies of nasal septal perforations are dedicated to the analysis of changes in speed value of the inhaled air depending on the size and localization of perforation of the nasal septum. But there is a lack of studies about warming and moistening of the inhaled air in a case of nasal septal perforation. These studies are necessary not only fo

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to study a new treatment to repair large nasal septal perforation with medical titanium membrane.
METHOD: Ten patients with septal perforation underwent repair with open rhinoplasty approach using titanium membrane.
RESULTS: The perforation of nasal septum in 10 patients was closed satisfactorily. During our followup period (mean, 1 year), the titanium membrane was mucosalized, and this technique led to persistent closing of perforation.
CONCLUSION: Repair of septal perforation with titanium membrane yields excellent results.

Nasal septal perforation may cause recurrent epistaxis, nasal obstruction, discharge, crusting, dryness, pain and whistling. Many surgical approaches for the repair of septal perforations have been reported in the literature, however most of the available closure techniques are technically difficult, require experienced surgeons and have a high rate of re-perforations. A new and simple surgical technique for the treatment of nasal septal perforations is described in the present study. A total of 13 patients with symptomatic nasal septal perforation measuring 17+/-3mm (range 5-26 mm) at the wid

The spectrum of surgical techniques in the repair of nasal septal defects is wide. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of using a diced cartilage in fascia (DC-F) graft for successful closure of nasal septal perforations and to evaluate symptom reduction. This was a retrospective study of 18 patients undergoing surgical repair of symptomatic nasoseptal perforations of different etiologies using a DC-F graft from 2020 until 2021. The procedure was feasible in all of the 18 patients. Reconstruction of septal defects with a DC-F graft led to reduction of crust formation, red

BACKGROUND: A wide variety of techniques for the surgical repair of nasal septal perforations (NSPs) have been described. Surgical management of NSPs can be broadly divided into open versus endonasal approaches, with additional variables involving unilateral or bilateral flaps, use of grafts, and placement of splints. The objective of this study was to compare surgical approaches and their outcomes.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL Plus databases were examined for patients undergoing NSP repair. English-language studies reporting surgical management of patients with the primary diagnosis o

Nasal septal perforation caused by bevacizumab is rarely reported in other cancers such as ovarian cancer and breast cancer, but it has not been reported in cervical cancer. A 48-year-old woman with a medical history of chronic allergic rhinitis was diagnosed stage 4B (T2bN1M0) cervical cancer and paclitaxel and carboplatin along with bevacizumab (triweekly) were administered. After eight courses of chemotherapy, nasal septal perforation was noted. The possibility of nasal septal perforation by bevacizumab was considered by excluding other causes. We report the first case of nasal septal perfo

After a review of the literature a modified surgical method called "bilateral bridge-flap technique" for the closure of nasoseptal perforations is outlined. After an extensive elevation of mucoperichondrium and mucoperiosteum from the entire septum as well as from the nasal roof and the nasal floor bipedicle advancement flaps are created: on one side above the perforation by a longitudinal incision along the nasal roof, and on the opposite side below the perforation by a longitudinal incision along the lateral wall of the lower nasal meatus. In very large perforations it may be necessary to cr

Introduction Nasal septal perforations can cause morbidity through crusting, whistling, epistaxis, and nasal obstruction. Management options include conservative therapy, surgical closure, or septal button insertion. At our institution, surgical closure is generally not offered for perforations greater than 2 cm in diameter or when the nasal mucosa remains unhealthy despite optimal medical therapy. This audit evaluated outcomes of silastic septal button insertion at a tertiary care centre over a five-year period. Methods A retrospective clinical audit was conducted among patients who underwent
