Racial differences in the association between partner abuse and barriers to prenatal health care among Asian and native Hawaiian/other Pacific Islander women.

OBJECTIVES: Prenatal health care (PNC) is associated with positive maternal and infant health outcomes. There is limited knowledge regarding Native Hawaiians/Other Pacific Islanders (NHOPI) and Asian women's access to PNC especially among those with partner abuse (PA) experience. The objectives of this paper were to (1) describe and examine factors associated with PNC access barriers among mothers, by race; and, (2) determine the association between PA and PNC access, by race. METHODS: We analyzed 2004-2007 data from Hawai'i's Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (n = 7,158). The outco

Suicidal ideation, interrupted attempt, and suicide attempt prevalence among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander veterans: Population-based estimates.

There is limited information on the prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) and non-fatal suicidal self-directed violence (NF-SSDV; e.g., interrupted attempts, suicide attempts) among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) veterans, a population in which suicide rates have disproportionately increased. Using population-based weighting, the present study examined the prevalence of SI and NF-SSDV among AANHPI veterans (n = 552), overall and disaggregated between Asian American (AA) and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) veterans, and compared to non-AANHPI veterans

Identifying U.S. regions with the highest suicide rates and examining differences in suicide methods among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Veterans.

The suicide rate among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Veterans increased from 2001 to 2020. Identifying regions where suicide rates are elevated and increasing among AANHPI Veterans would inform targeted prevention efforts for members of this cohort. We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of 377,833 AANHPI Veterans to examine suicide rates and methods (2005-2019) by United States (US) region and over time (2005-2009, 2010-2014, 2015-2019), using US Veteran Eligibility Trends and Statistics and Joint DoD/VA Mortality Data Repository data. Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, mental health and treatment need in the United States during COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Before COVID-19, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (NH/PI) endured a heavy burden of alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) use in prior US data. Responding to reports that many NH/PI communities experienced severe COVID-19 disparities that could exacerbate their ATOD burden, we partnered with NH/PI communities to assess the substance use patterns and treatment needs of diverse NH/PIs during COVID-19. METHODS: Collaborating with NH/PI community organisations across five states with large NH/PI populations, we conducted a large-scale investigation of NH/PI ATOD use, mental healt

Head and Neck Cancer Stage at Presentation and Survival Outcomes Among Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander Patients Compared With Asian and White Patients.

IMPORTANCE: Research studies often group Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander individuals together with Asian individuals despite being consistently identified as having worse health outcomes and higher rates of comorbidities and mortality. Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander individuals also have high incidence rates of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer compared with the general population; however, disparities in clinical presentation and survival outcomes of head and neck cancer squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) among this population have not been investigated nor compared with t

Risk of incident cardiovascular disease events among older Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander colorectal cancer survivors in the United States: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Among Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders (ANHPI) in the United States, cancer and cardiovascular disease are the leading causes of death. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer among ANHPIs, with improving survival rates. However, the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events among ANHPI CRC survivors is unknown, especially within disaggregated ANHPI race and ethnicity groups. METHODS: We estimated the risk of CVD events among ANHPI CRC survivors within the SEER-Medicare database. Composite CVD, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, and stroke/transi

Exploring community knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of Alzheimer's Disease/Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias and healthy ageing in Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) disparities exist in the rapidly growing and extremely heterogeneous Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NH/PI) ageing populations in the United States. Limited community-clinical resources supporting culturally competent and timely diagnosis exacerbate barriers to existing care services in these populations. Community-based participatory research or community-engaged research are proven community-academic research approaches that can support the development and implementation of community-focused programmes to maximise c

Risk factors associated with 1-year mortality after osteoporotic hip fracture in Hawai'i: higher mortality risk among Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders.

UNLABELLED: We studied factors affecting osteoporotic hip fracture mortality in Hawai'i, a region with unique geography and racial composition. Men, older adults, higher ASA score, lower BMI, and NHPI race were associated with higher mortality. This is the first study demonstrating increased mortality risk after hip fracture in NHPI patients. PURPOSE: To estimate mortality rates and identify specific risk factors associated with 1-year mortality after osteoporotic hip fracture in Hawai'i. METHODS: A retrospective review of adults (≥ 50 years) hospitalized with an osteoporotic hip fracture at

An Antiracism Community-Based Participatory Research With Organizations Serving Immigrant and Marginalized Communities, Including Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders in the United States Pacific Northwest: Qualitative Description Study With Key Informants.

BACKGROUND: Asian American (AA) community leaders, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NH/PI) community leaders, and allies in the United States Pacific Northwest expressed concern that there are families and children from AA communities and NH/PI communities who experience and witness acts of xenophobia and racism. This can cause racial trauma. The long-time practice of aggregating AA and NH/PI data contributes to erasure and makes it challenging to advance health equity, such as allocating resources. According to AAPI Data's long-awaited report in June 2022, there are over 24 million AAs and 1

"I Speak Up for Myself, My Family, and for My Community": How Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders Respond to Anti-Asian Racism During COVID-19.

This qualitative study explored how Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) responded to anti-Asian racism during COVID-19. Participants (n = 459; Mage = 26.4 years; 77.8% female) completed a survey and responded to the open-ended question: "How have you responded to anti-Asian racism since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic?" Reflective thematic analysis was utilized to code responses. Three themes were identified, indicating that AANHPIs engaged in knowledge sharing and cultural exploration; experienced emotional reactions that galvanized efforts to take care o

Comorbid substance use disorders with other Axis I and II mental disorders among treatment-seeking Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, and mixed-race people.

Little is known about behavioral healthcare needs of Asian Americans (AAs), Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (NHs/PIs), and mixed-race people (MRs)-the fastest growing segments of the U.S. population. We examined substance use disorder (SUD) prevalences and comorbidities among AAs, NHs/PIs, and MRs (N = 4572) in a behavioral health electronic health record database. DSM-IV diagnoses among patients aged 1-90 years who accessed behavioral healthcare from 11 sites were systematically captured: SUD, anxiety, mood, personality, adjustment, childhood-onset, cognitive/dementia, dissociative, eating

"I Need to Get My Culture Back": Youth and Provider Perspectives on Integrating Culturally Based Approaches into Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Youth Experiencing Homelessness.

There is growing interest in decolonizing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and embedding cultural practices into social and medical services in Hawai'i. Wahine ("woman") Talk is a multilevel, comprehensive SRH program for female youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) led by community health, social work, and medical providers. This study examines youth and program provider perspectives of culturally based approaches that may strengthen SRH programs. The study team conducted three focus groups and ten in-depth interviews with participating youth and program providers after the program's conc

Nearly half of female youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) become pregnant due to myriad individual, family, community, and structural factors. In response, our team developed and tested Wahine ("woman") Talk, a multilevel, trauma-informed sexual and reproductive health intervention created with and for female YEH aged 14 to 22. After Wahine Talk, youth were invited to participate in a participatory action PhotoVoice project regarding experiences of the program, waiting to start or expand their families, and homelessness. Photographs were taken and captioned by youth, and then further examine

Disparities of Delayed Dental Visits and Severe Tooth Loss Among Older Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders in Hawai'i: A Cross-Sectional Study of Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Data from 2012 to 2020.

Oral health is a major health concern in the US and globally, particularly among communities of color and low-income/low-education groups. General health disparities have been reported among Native Hawaiians (NHs) and Other Pacific Islanders (OPIs), although less is known about the specific racial/ethnic and socioeconomic trends that are relevant to oral health disparities for NHOPIs. We examined delayed dental visits and severe tooth loss among older NHOPI adults in relation to sociodemographic factors and community level disparities using five waves of data from the Hawai'i Behavioral Risk F
