[Therapeutic trial with ivermectin in loiasis with medium and high microfilaremia].

Treatment with ivermectin at the dosage of 200 microgram/kg in 28 Congolese loiasis patients led to an important decrease of the microfilaremia on day 7, with a reduction of about 90% of the initial parasite load. However, no negativation was observed and, moreover, the parasitemia did not change from day 7 to day 14. Tolerance was quite good, but weak to moderate reactions, linked to the lysis of the microfilariae, were observed in one third of the patients with a microfilaremia greater or equal to 2,500/mm3.

[Relationship between early maladaptive schemas and quality of life in women with infertility].

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged childlessness, despite the desire to have children, imposes burdens across somatic, psychological, and social-relational domains. These challenges may be further amplified by early maladaptive schemas, which shape emotional functioning, self-esteem, and stress regulation, thereby potentially influencing quality of life and experiences related to fertility treatments. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of early maladaptive schemas on the quality of life of infertile women and to explore the associations between these schemas and personality factors th

Pleiotropic effect of the TPH A779C polymorphism on nicotine dependence and personality.

Recent studies from molecular genetics have suggested an association between the tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1) gene and nicotine addiction indicating a dysfunction of the serotonergic (5-HT) system in smoking behavior. In a sample of 252 healthy subjects, a significant association between variations observed in nicotine dependence and the heterozygous AC-genotype of the TPH A779C polymorphism could be demonstrated. Moreover, the heterozygous genotype was significantly associated with a personality trait of neurotic aggression (indirect hostility, negativism), as measured by the Buss-Durkee-H

Predicting borderline and antisocial personality disorder features in nonclinical subjects using measures of impulsivity and aggressiveness.

This study examines impulsivity and aggressiveness dimensions as predictors of borderline (BPD) and antisocial (ASPD) personality disorder symptoms in nonclinical subjects. A total of 747 undergraduate university students were administered the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4+, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11, and the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that motor impulsiveness, irritability, resentment, and guilt predicted BPD symptoms among university students after controlling for the effect of ASPD and depressive symptoms. ASPD symptoms were pr

Catatonia in a psychiatric setup having diverse etiology: A case series.

Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by stupor, mutism, negativism, posturing, mannerisms, stereotypies, waxy flexibility, catalepsy, grimacing, echolalia, and echopraxia. This syndrome has a plethora of etiologies that arise from neurological and medical conditions, psychiatric illnesses, and withdrawal of psychoactive substances. Adding to this, it has numerous differentials, including an acute confusional state, which often adds to the diagnostic dilemma. The incidence of catatonia is between 5 and 20%. A comprehensive workup of the patient is required to rule out organic

Adult mild encephalitis with reversible splenial lesion and catatonia: A case report.

The relationship between corpus callosum and schizophrenia is elusive. Neuropsychiatric symptoms in Mild encephalitis with reversible splenial lesion (MERS) such as delirium, and negativism, suggest a link between corpus callosum and psychiatric disturbances. Here in, we report catatonia as an initial symptom of MERS in a schizophrenic patient. The aim of this study is to discuss the likely causal relationship between catatonic syndrome and MERS. To the best of our knowledge, the catatonia was not reported before as a prodromal symptom of MERS. We therefore report this case in order to enlarge

Empirical correlates of the MMPI-2 Restructured Clinical (RC) Scales in a nonclinical setting.

We examined the empirical correlates of the MMPI-2 Restructured Clinical (RC; Tellegen et al., 2003) scales in a nonclinical setting. We administered 12 criterion measures assessing variables expected to be associated differentially with the RC Scales along with the MMPI-2 to a sample of 1,038 college students (Men, N = 407; Women, N = 631). Criteria included measures of somatization, depression, Machiavellian negativism, drug and alcohol abuse, anger, anxiety, social phobias, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, magical ideation, perceptual aberration, lability, and impulsivity. Malignant catatonia with severe bronchorrhea and its response to electroconvulsive therapy.

A 21-year-old female presented excitement, auditory hallucination, monologue, and insomnia. After 1 week of risperidone administration, she showed hyperthermia, salivation, and muscle rigidity. Risperidone was discontinued, but stupor, convulsions, and respiratory distress developed. In the intensive care unit where she was transferred, catatonic symptoms such as stupor or excitement, catalepsy, and negativism were prominent. In addition, severe bronchorrhea causing respiratory failure was observed. Her catatonic symptoms, hyperthermia, and bronchorrhea resolved by ECT. After recovery, affecti

Severe catatonia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome: report of 3 cases.

Catatonia is a syndrome characterized by motor rigidity or stupor, negativism, mutism and inappropriate or bizarre posture. Without proper management, patients may have significant morbidity and mortality from stupor, coma and death (lethal or malignant catatonia). Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is characterized by a sudden appearance of motor rigidity, fever, autonomic effect, increased white blood cell count, serum creatinine phosphokinase, liver enzymes, and myoglobin. The mortality rate is 15 per cent to 25 per cent or even higher when depot form of neuroleptic is used. We report a p

[Gastric ulcer as a unique and symptomatic manifestation of infection by cytomegalovirus in a healthy adult].

A previously healthy female without risk factors had cytomegalic inclusion disease with symptomatic gastric involvement and without evidence of systemic cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Multiple ulcerations with a fibrinous bottom were discovered by fibrogastroscopy in the gastric body and antrum. Histological study showed cells with intranuclear inclusions and basophilic nuclear cytoplasm. The detection of specific IgM and its subsequent negativization suggest an active CMV infection. Gastric infection may be the isolated and symptomatic feature of the disease in the healthy adult.

In the follow up of Achille's tenorraphy, negativization of Thompson calf queezing test is not always omogeneous and absolute. Aim of the paper is to correlate Thompson test to different anatomical-ultrasound and functional parameters. We investigated clinically and by ultrasound 61 patients operated on of Achille's tenorraphy at Novara Hospital with follow-up of 10 to 46 months. Negative controls were contralateral tendons. We excluded patients with previous and/or contralateral Achille's tendon ruptures, those operated after 7 days, diabetics or with autoimmune diseases, if used topic steroi

Emotional disorder symptoms, anhedonia, and negative urgency as predictors of hedonic hunger in adolescents.

Affect and reward are associated with unhealthy eating and weight; however, less research has examined affective predictors of hedonic hunger (i.e., extreme reward responsivity, pleasure toward, and drive for food), particularly among adolescents. Whether symptoms indicative of emotional disturbance increase risk of adverse reward-based eating-related symptoms such as hedonic hunger, is unknown. Such evidence could explain why emotional problems increase risk of eating and weight problems among adolescents, when eating-related health problems often originate. This report examined baseline emot

Successful Treatment of Catatonia: A Case Report and Review of Treatment.

Herein, we report the case of a 20-year-old Caucasian male with a previous psychiatric history of schizophreniform, autism, unspecified intellectual disorder, and past medical history of hypertension, who presented after a suicidal attempt. One month prior to admission for the suicidal attempt, the patient had mutism. While admitted, the patient showed signs of mutism, posturing, negativism, and waxy flexibility. Treatment with both aripiprazole and lorazepam was effective and reversed the patient's catatonia after low-dose titration. This case highlights the importance of reviewing patient hi

Platelet serotonergic markers and aggressive behaviour in healthy subjects.

The availability of peripheral markers of the serotonergic system, which appears to play a major role in aggressive behaviour, prompted us to investigate in healthy subjects the possible correlations between platelet 3H-imipramine (3H-IMI) binding or mono-amine-oxidase (MAO) activity and aggression as measured by the Italian version (QTA) of the Buss and Durkee Inventory. The results showed the presence of significant and positive correlations between MAO activity and QTA total scores and the scales of negativism and verbal aggression, and no correlation between 3H-IMI binding parameters and Q

Lupus erythematosus-like eruption due to D-penicillamine in progressive systemic sclerosis.

A 58-year-old woman with progressive systemic sclerosis developed a butterfly erythematous eruption, hemorrhagic maculae, crusting, and erosions on the face 15 days following administration of D-penicillamine. This appeared to be a lupus erythematosus-like eruption due to an adverse drug reaction to D-penicillamine because of the rapid recovery from the general symptoms, the total involution of skin lesions with topical treatment only, the transient demonstration of autoantibodies and their fast negativation, negative ANA, and the histologic features of lupus erythematosus combined with marked

Diagnostic and therapeutic management of Cryptococcosis in a kitten with practical considerations to veterinary pediatric therapeutic approach.

A 3-months-old male domestic kitten was referred for repeated seizures. Analysis revealed Cryptococcus neoformans. Levetiracetam and fluconazole were administered without significant clinical improvements and without negativization. Hypothesizing resistance, therapy was switched to amphotericin B. Seizure disappeared. Haematological controls highlighted transitory increasing of CK, BUN, ALP and cholesterol. PCR repeated two weeks after the treatment was negative for Cryptococcus neoformans. Nowadays the cat is 5 years old, and no seizures occurred since the age of 5 months.

Electroconvulsive therapy for catatonia in juvenile neuropsychiatric lupus.

Neuropsychiatric manifestations are serious and frequent complications of systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor disturbance (including waxy flexibility and catalepsy), stupor, excitement, negativism, mutism, echopraxia and echolalia. Catatonia associated with SLE has been only rarely reported, especially in children. Here we present a case of a 14-year-old patient encountered in consultation-liaison psychiatry who presented catatonia associated with SLE. Her catatonia was refractory to treatment with pulse methylprednisolone, intrave
