Drawing on original sources from Italian and Swedish archives, this article provides novel insights into the life of Ugo Cerletti (1877-1963). Cerletti, the Italian neuropsychiatrist and originator (with his assistant Lucio Bini) of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in the late 1930s, strongly coveted the Nobel Prize in the 1950s and 1960s. He would never receive it, despite maintaining close correspondence with his nominators and informants in Sweden. This article critically discusses potential reasons for the rejection of his candidacy, including the tensions between Cerletti and Bini and the

During the past 125 years, three dermatologists have been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: Albert Neisser (1855-1916), Erich Hoffmann (1868-1959), and Aaron B. Lerner (1920-2007). Neisser was nominated 22 times for his discovery of the gonococcus and for his work on the serologic testing for syphilis through complement fixation. Hoffmann was nominated three times for his role in the discovery of Treponema pallidum. Lerner was nominated twice, once for his work on melanocyte-stimulating hormone and a second time for his work on melatonin. Although neither Neisser, Hoffma

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is a prestigious award given every year for ostensibly the most important discovery in the field. Prizes in Medicine have typically gone to honor foundational knowledge rather than measurable impact. Two recent examples from global health (a rotavirus vaccine, child growth standards) offer alternatives for what might be lauded in medicine. These two examples and historical achievements regarding cholera and smallpox are worthy but do not fall within the scope of Nobel awards for Peace or Economics. The COVID-19 pandemic gives a new context for the idea

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) made a marked transformation for neglected and vulnerable communities in the developing countries from the start, but infectious diseases of poverty (IDoPs) continue to inflict a disproportionate global public health burden with associated consequences, thereby contributing to the vicious cycle of poverty and inequity. However, the effectiveness and large-scale coverage of artemisinin combination therapy (ACT) have revolutionized malaria treatment just as the control of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and onchocerciasis have benefitted from harnessing the broa

The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, in the year 2020, has been awarded to three scientists, Harvey Alter, Michael Houghton, and Charles Rice, for jointly discovering the hepatitis C virus (HCV). This remarkable achievement is a huge breakthrough in the fight against hepatitis C. Most importantly, their pioneering works have successfully saved millions of lives by acting as the foundation for sensitive blood tests and effective antivirals. Inspired by the 2020 Nobel Prize winners, this review article honors their great efforts and discusses several unmet needs in the path toward HCV eli

Chronic hepatitis C, which is caused by the hepatitis C virus, represents a substantial health threat to humans and causes approximately 700,000 deaths each year worldwide. However, 30 years after the discovery of this virus in 1989, nearly perfect antiviral drugs that can clear up to 95% of this virus have been developed due to numerous biomedical research studies and cooperation among members of the hepatitis C community. Because of these advances, the WHO announced a goal to eliminate the hepatitis C virus globally by 2030. Reviewing prior advances in detail, it is clear that all these achi

During the 20th century, only two persons have been awarded the Nobel Prize for psychiatric discoveries, Julius Wagner-Jauregg in 1927 for the introduction of malaria inoculation in dementia paralytica and Egas Moniz in 1949 for prefrontal leucotomy. According to traditional narrative, Moniz was inspired by a presentation by Carlyle Jacobsen on prefrontal lesions in chimpanzees at a congress in London in 1935. A few months later, he performed the first operations with the help of a young neurosurgeon. These leucotomies were done using injections of a small amount of alcohol into each frontal l

Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman were given the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their findings of nucleoside base modifications that lead to the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. This was a remarkable achievement, given that their initial manuscript was rejected by Nature and Science in 2005. The development of mRNA vaccines lagged for more than a decade for several reasons, including the lack of funding, the perceived risks of the technology, and the scepticism of many scientists. Furthermore, Karikó and Weissman's study appeared to be technical and diffi

George Hoyot Whipple (1878-1976) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1934, along with Minot and Murphy for their studies in pernicious anemia. Whipple's name has been given to the bacterial disease which he describes in 1907 that we know today as Whipple's disease or intestinal lipodystrophy. He gave the name of thalasemia to the Mediterranean anemia of Cooley, and made diverse contributions to hematology and general pathology. He worked with William Welch in the Department of Pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and later became director of the University of Rochester. He

Forty years ago, in 1986, Rita Levi-Montalcini was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of Nerve Growth Factor, a fundamental finding that inaugurated the field of trophic signaling in the nervous system. Her research, conducted with credibility and consistency under the precarious conditions of an Italy enduring the Second World War, and later refined in the United States, rigorously demonstrated that neuronal growth and survival are regulated by specific chemical signals, not merely by intrinsic processes. Using biological assays involving sarcoma and chicken e

AIMS: Since the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded in 1923 to FG Banting and JJR Macleod, many voices have been raised against this decision. The bitterest protest was that of the Romanian scientist Nicolae C. Paulescu. In 2002, The Romanian Academy of Sciences, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) planned to hold a series of academic events the following year in Paris to acknowledge Paulescu's scientific merits in the discovery of the antidiabetic hormone. However, the initiative was cancelled in August 2003,

Working in the Brazilian backland, Chagas described a new disease. He discovered the etiologic agent, the vector, the reservoir, the acute stage, the several clinical aspects of the chronic stage (particularly the heart disease), role of autoimmunity in its pathogenesis, and anticipated the social impact of the disease. Chagas was nominated to Nobel Prize twice: in 1913, and in 1921. In 1913, Richet won the prize because his work on anaphylaxis. In 1921, no one received the Nobel Prize. It is believed that detraction of Chagas' work at the National Academy of Medicine, made by jealousy, medioc

Hermann J. Muller was awarded the 1946 Nobel Prize for his 1927 discovery of X-ray-induced gene mutations in Drosophila melanogaster. This paper re-examines the 1926-1927 experimental framework of this research, demonstrating that Muller's biological model was structurally incapable of isolating single-gene transmutations. Furthermore, we examine the Mavor precedent: between 1921 and 1924 during which James Mavor published quantitative experiments in Science and Genetics demonstrating that X-rays induced transmissible chromosomal alterations. To claim priority over Mavor and secure scientific

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly to Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for characterizing regulatory T cells (Tregs) and identifying the FOXP3 gene as their "master regulator". This work rehabilitated the long-debated concept of suppressor T cells, and established the field of peripheral immune tolerance. Beyong recounting the historical contributions of the laureates, this article reviews the emergence of Treg research in France since the early 2000s, highlighting the decisive influence of Benoît Salomon in the establishment and development of t

The discovery and development of penicillin that earned the Nobel Prize in 1945 changed the world. Tremendous collaborative interdisciplinary and interinstitutional effort focused on isolation, purification, determination of the structure and mode of activity. The identification of the strained β-lactam ring as the key biologically reactive component provided opportunities for development of multiple generations of antibiotics. The concerns about resistance due to overuse and misuse that were expressed very early on have been realized and now require new investment in antibiotic research.
