BACKGROUND: Population-based data on mild parkinsonian signs (MPS) and parkinsonism in nonagenarians are scarce.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of MPS, definite parkinsonism, and broader parkinsonian motor phenotypes; assess MPS after excluding idiopathic Parkinson disease and definite parkinsonism; and examine associations with sex and dementia in a cohort of nonagenarians.
METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis included 144 participants from the Neurological Disorders in Central Spain (NEDICES) cohort aged ≥90 years on May 1, 1999; 97 were examined, and 47 had reliable indirect inf

OBJECTIVE: Elderly patients with critical limb ischemia are an especially frail and vulnerable group of patients. There is little literature investigating outcomes and resource utilization in nonagenarians undergoing major lower extremity amputation (MLEA). This study aims to elucidate the outcomes of this unique set of patients for whom amputation may often be considered a "palliative" intervention.
METHODS: Analyzing over 16,000 records from the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) database, we collected demographic, operative, and postoperative data on all patients who underwent an MLEA. We p

BACKGROUND: As a result of the increasing life expectancy of the western population, the number of older patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) seeking medical care is growing. Our objective was to describe the characteristics of a consecutive series of nonagenarian patients with CLTI and evaluate the outcomes of their management.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a consecutive series of nonagenarian patients with CLTI attended at our institution between 2005 and 2019. Primary endpoints were 1-year limb salvage and survival rates.
RESULTS: A total of 171 patien

BACKGROUND: Nonagenarians (NON) are a growing segment of the population and have a high prevalence of cardiac disease. Many findings encountered on their echocardiograms are also found in younger individuals with valvular or myocardial disease. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe this distinct echocardiographic phenotype.
METHODS: We identified our study population by querying our echo database to identify unique septuagenarians (SEPT) and nonagenarians (NON) who underwent a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014. Exclusion criteria were

BACKGROUND: Several studies have focused on predictors of mobility limitations and disabilities. Yet little is known about the pace and patterns of mobility changes among very old people. This study examined changes in functional mobility among individuals aged 90 years and older during a 2-9-year follow-up. In addition, we were interested in the patterns of mobility changes.
METHODS: Data were collected through a mailed questionnaire in the years 2001, 2003, 2007 and 2010. The study population (n = 948) consisted of individuals from three cohorts (2001, 2003, 2007) who participated in at lea

BACKGROUND: Nonagenarians are typically considered poor operative candidates for major aortic intervention because of shorter life expectancy, multiple comorbidities, and increased perioperative morbidity and mortality. Endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) has clearly been associated with a lower perioperative morbidity and mortality in most anatomically suitable patients. There have been many reports of the technical success of EVAR in octogenarians, but few documenting EVAR in nonagenarians. In this study, we sought to review our experience with elective EVAR in nonagenarians

INTRODUCTION: The world's population is ageing and the elderly population itself is growing older. This population shows a high incidence of hip fractures. We performed a retrospective study, reviewing the functional status, postoperative complications and mortality rate of nonagenarians who underwent surgery for hip fracture.
METHODS AND SUBJECTS: 56 nonagenarian patients underwent hip fracture surgery in our institution between January 2000 and December 2010. Two of these patients had presented with hip fracture on separate occasions, giving a total of 58 hips for analysis. Patients with op

OBJECTIVES: Changes in the age profile of the population in the western world and improvement in surgical techniques and postoperative care have contributed to a growing number of cardiosurgical patients aged over 90. In periods when transapical and transfemoral aortic valve replacement were done, we aimed at evaluating the outcome of nonagenarians after conventional aortic valve replacement and cardiac surgery in general, and determining perioperative parameters to predict a complicated postoperative course.
METHODS: Between 1995 and 2011, 49 nonagenarians (aged 91.2±3.1 years) underwent car

With increasing age of the general population, the necessity for cardiac surgery in the collective of patients aged 90 and older has been increasing. To aid in the choice of adequate therapy we investigated our experience for the group of nonagenarians undergoing surgical interventions. From 6/2000 to 9/2007, 17 patients aged 90 and older underwent open-heart surgery at our institution. We performed a retrospective data analysis including baseline preoperative clinical status, intra- and postoperative results and the long-term survival in the further postoperative course. We performed cardiac

Background/Objectives: To evaluate the safety of cholecystectomy in nonagenarians. Methods: In compliance with the PRISMA statement standards, a systematic review including random-effects meta-analysis and meta-regression models was conducted. All studies reporting postoperative outcomes in patients aged ≥90 undergoing cholecystectomy were included and analyzed. Results: Six studies (1223 patients) were included. The risk of 30-day mortality was 5.4% (95% CI 3.1-7.7); 30-day morbidity occurred in 22% (95% CI 11.3-32.8). The mean length of hospital stay was 11.5 days (95% CI 8.3-14.6). Postoper

BACKGROUND: Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) is a viable option for elderly patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm. In extremely elderly individuals with inherently limited survival, this study aimed to evaluate EVAR outcomes in nonagenarians and identify factors associated with favorable survival to refine selection criteria.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 144 patients who underwent elective EVAR between April 2013 and August 2023. Patients were divided into those aged <90 years (younger group, n = 132) and ≥90 years (nonagenarian group, n = 12). Primary outcomes included postoperati

BACKGROUND: Octa-nonagenarians with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) represent a high-risk group due to frequently poor performance status, adverse genomics (e.g., TP53 mutations, complex karyotype), a high incidence of secondary AML, and inability to undergo an allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Evaluating their outcomes with modern treatment approaches is important.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed outcomes of patients ≥80 years old with newly diagnosed AML treated at our center from 2013-2023.
RESULTS: A total of 289 patients (median age, 83 years; range, 80-95 years) were includ

INTRODUCTION: The risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD) increases with ageing.
METHODS: We evaluated causes and characteristics of unexpected SCD in SCD victims aged ≥ 80 years in a consecutive series of 5,869 SCD victims in Northern Finland. All the victims underwent medico-legal autopsy as medico-legal autopsy is mandatory in cases of unexpected sudden death in Finland. All the non-cardiac deaths such as pulmonary embolism and cerebral hemorrhage were excluded from the study, as were unnatural deaths such as intoxications.
RESULTS: Among SCD victims ≥ 80 years, 91.0% of SCDs were due to isch
