A nonverbal phoneme deletion task administered in a dynamic assessment format.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the project was to design a nonverbal dynamic assessment of phoneme deletion that may prove useful with individuals who demonstrate complex communication needs (CCN) and are unable to communicate using natural speech or who present with moderate-severe speech impairments. METHOD: A nonverbal dynamic assessment of phoneme deletion with a systematic prompting and scoring system was developed and compared to the same measure administered using a traditional "static" format. Both versions were administered to 64 typically developing children ranging in age from 6 to 8;5. T

Noninvasive reduction of neural rigidity alters autistic behaviors in humans.

Autistic behaviors correlate with reductions in specific brain-state transitions in global neural dynamics, implying that the mitigation of such rigid brain dynamics may alter autistic traits. To examine this possibility, we investigated longitudinal behavioral effects of state-dependent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in autistic adults. We found that excitatory TMS over the right parietal lobule decreased neural rigidity, which commensurately reduced social and nonsocial autistic behaviors. Specifically, TMS-induced neural flexibility immediately decreased cognitive inflexibility and

PURPOSE: To report a successful method of communication with deaf patients during topical anesthetic refractive surgery. OBSERVATIONS: Nonverbal ways of communicating with deaf patients during cataract surgery have been reported. Here, we present a report of LASIK surgery for a deaf patient with topical anesthesia using similar communication methods. CONCLUSION AND IMPORTANCE: Creative communication methods can be effective for topical anesthetic LASIK surgery for deaf patients. Our report validates tactile communication as an alternative to general anesthesia for corneal refractive surgerie

Unusual Cause of Distress in an Intellectually Disabled Adolescent: A Reminder to Suspect Foreign Body Ingestion.

Foreign body ingestion is a common yet often underdiagnosed condition in intellectually disabled, nonverbal patients due to atypical presentations. Early recognition is essential to prevent serious complications. A 17-year-old nonverbal boy with intellectual disability presented with abnormal posturing and agitation, initially suspected to be a seizure episode. Radiological imaging revealed a large, round, radiopaque object in the esophagus, later identified as a whole lemon. The object was successfully displaced distally during endoscopic intervention. In patients with limited communication a

Vocal display rules in everyday life: when is it appropriate to laugh, sigh or scream?

The appropriateness of common nonverbal vocalizations is guided by social norms, known as display rules. This preregistered, 7-day experience-sampling study examined how perceived appropriateness varies across situations. A total of 142 adults completed three surveys per day (2670 surveys total; 3821 vocalizations), rating appropriateness alongside situational cues and psychological situation characteristics. Laughter and sighs were most often judged appropriate, whereas screams and retches were least. Appropriateness was higher at home and in social places (e.g. parties) than in work/school o

Nonverbal learning disability.

Nonverbal learning disability (NLD) is described as a subtype of specific learning disability where the source of the disability is a difficulty in processing nonverbal information. The child with NLD presents with problems in visual, spatial, and tactile perception but with strengths in rote verbal skills. Traditionally, these children were recognized by their difficulties in arithmetic which presented a stark contrast with their strengths in spelling and decoding text. They also exhibited a split between their verbal IQ (VIQ) and performance IQ (PIQ) scores with the VIQ being significantly h

Nonverbal learning disabilities: a critical review.

This article presents a critical review of the term and concept of nonverbal learning disability (NLD). After a brief historical introduction, the article focuses on the apparent rarity of NLD; the hypothesis of the frequent co-occurrence of emotional disorder, depression, and suicide in NLD; the white matter hypothesis as an explanation of the origin of NLD; and the question of NLD as part of a variety of other disorders. It is argued that NLD presents a broad hypothesis, but that there is little evidence to support its use in clinical practice.

A discussion of apraxia, aphasia, and gestural language.

It is understood that damage to the left cerebral hemisphere in adulthood may result in syndromes of language disturbances called the aphasias. The study of these syndromes sheds light on normal language processes, the relationship between language behavior and the brain, and how best to treat aphasic individuals. Aphasia, for some, is a central communication disorder affecting all symbolic behavior in all modalities (i.e., speech, writing, and gesture). Difficulty producing symbolic gestures on command is called apraxia. Others view aphasia as a manifestation of a motor-sequencing disorder af

Non-verbal vocalizations, dementia and social interaction.

In later stages of Alzheimer's disease many people will engage in noise-making (screaming and other kinds of sounds), often experienced as interruptive by others. A problem with the noise-making is the difficulty in understanding the meaning of the noise. This study addresses two questions: to what extent is noise-making responsive to the ongoing interaction and is noise-making regarded as meaningless behavior by other participants? The analysis of selective examples shows that noises may be fitted into the conversational interaction to a certain degree and in some instances is also responsive

Communication as Healing Art in Caring for Persons with Alzheimer's and Dementia.

Communication is an essential aspect of care for all patients but is especially important for individuals with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. Nurses who care for persons living with dementia (PwD), as well as family members and caregivers, need understanding of verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and approaches that are effective throughout the stages of dementia. Spiritual assessment and care also are critical. This article provides evidence-based and biblical examples for communication as a healing art in caring for PwD.

Modelling gesture use and early language development in autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Nonverbal communication abilities, including gesture use, are impaired in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known about how common gestures may influence or be influenced by other areas of development. AIMS: To examine the relationships between gesture, fine motor and language in young children with ASD compared with a comparison group using multiple measures and methods in a structural equation modelling framework. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Participants included 110 children with ASD and a non-ASD comparison group of 87 children (that included children with developm

Child- and Environment-Related Factors Influencing Daily Cochlear Implant Use: A Datalog Study.

OBJECTIVES: To understand the varying levels of daily cochlear implant (CI) use in children, previous studies have investigated factors that may be of influence. The objective of this study was to investigate the degree with which new child-related and environment-related characteristics were associated with consistent CI use. DESIGN: The design of this study was retrospective. Data were reviewed of 81 children (51% females, mean age 6.4 years with a range of 1.3 to 17.7 years) who received a CI between 2012 and 2019. Developmental status, quantified burden of comorbidity, hearing experience,

Epilepsy in early development: the lesson from surgery for early intractable seizures.

This report examines the impact on development and the problems involved in assessing development in very young children with early-onset intractable seizures, particularly infantile spasms. A review of studies on medically and surgically treated children with infantile spasms underscores the relationship between seizure control and developmental outcome. About 50% of children with markedly intractable infantile spasms attained seizure control and significant improvement in the use of nonverbal communication, a developmental measure that has been used in other populations of developmentally de

Eye examination testability in children with autism and in typical peers.

PURPOSE: To compare testability of vision and eye tests in an examination protocol of 9- to 17-year-old patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to typically developing (TD) peers. METHODS: In a prospective pilot study, 61 children and adolescents (34 with ASD and 27 who were TD) aged 9 to 17 years completed an eye examination protocol including tests of visual acuity, refraction, convergence (eye teaming), stereoacuity (depth perception), ocular motility, and ocular health. Patients who required new refractive correction were retested after wearing their updated spectacle prescription fo

Three different profiles: early socio-communicative capacities in typical Rett syndrome, the preserved speech variant and normal development.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This is the first study aiming to compare pre-diagnostic socio-communicative development of a female with typical Rett syndrome (RTT), a female with the preserved speech variant of RTT (PSV) and a control toddler. METHODS: We analysed 1275 min of family videos at the participants' age between 9 and 24 months and used the Inventory of Potential Communicative Acts (IPCA) to delineate their repertoires of communicative forms and functions. RESULTS: The results revealed different profiles for the three different conditions. The repertoire of communicative gestures and (pre)l
