Targeted Morphine Administration Training to Enhance Nurses' Knowledge and Self-Efficacy for End of Life Dyspnea.

Dyspnea is a prevalent and distressing symptom at the end of life (EOL), affecting up to 90% of dying patients and causing significant suffering for patients and families. Morphine sulfate remains the standard pharmacological treatment for refractory EOL dyspnea, effectively modulating central respiratory drive and alleviating breathlessness perception, distinct from its use in chronic stable breathlessness, where recent evidence shows limited benefit and potential harms. Many nurses, however, lack adequate knowledge and confidence in administering morphine appropriately due to misconceptions

Subcutaneous administration of isatuximab in patients with multiple myeloma by an on-body delivery system: results of a nurse survey.

IntroductionSubcutaneous (SC) administration of the anti-CD38 antibody isatuximab (Isa) by an on-body delivery system (OBDS), plus pomalidomide-dexamethasone, has demonstrated safety and efficacy comparable to intravenous (IV) administration, with no infusion reactions and excellent local tolerability in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. We report here results of a nurse survey designed to evaluate convenience of treatment with SC Isa, via OBDS, for healthcare providers and MM patients.MethodsA newly developed, expert-vetted questionnaire was used to survey nurses with experience in SC administr

Setting Standards for Chemotherapy & Biologic Administration: Organizational Clinical Nurse Specialists Led Practice Change.

PURPOSE: Because of the lack of institutional standards, variation in practice for administering chemotherapy and biologics, including clinical trial infusions, was detected. This article describes a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center's successful education and training of nurses on a new standard method for administering small-volume infusion using the circle priming technique. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: A team of clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) led a system-wide practice change to standardize the administration of chemotherapy and biologic treatments using the circle prim

Administration of Etelcalcetide for the Treatment of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Patients with CKD-MBD on Hemodialysis: A Nephrology Nursing Perspective.

The number, volume, and timing of oral medications prescribed to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism can add to the burden of disease management for both the patient and the nurse. Administering intravenous (IV) medication when possible has the potential of reducing the burden of medication management. Data on the use of IV calcimimetic etelcalcetide has shown improvement in blood calcium, phosphorus, and parathyroid hormone levels. IV administration of etelcalcetide at the end of each hemodialysis session may reduce the pill burden for patients and has the potential to help improve disease ma

Nurses' sleep quality and medication administration errors: A cross-sectional study based on the ten rights framework.

Medication errors are among the most common causes of preventable harm in healthcare, and nurses' sleep quality is a critical factor influencing these errors. Understanding how sleep quality affects adherence to the "Ten Rights" of medication administration is essential for improving patient safety. This study aimed to examine the effect of nurses' sleep quality on medication administration errors within the framework of the "Ten Rights" of medication administration. This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Türkiye. A total of 217 nurses voluntarily parti

Differences in pain assessment and decisions regarding the administration of analgesics between novices, intermediates and experts in pediatric nursing.

This article describes a study examining the influence of expertise on nurses' pain assessments and decisions regarding pharmacological interventions in children. In an experimental design, novices (n = 271), intermediates (n = 222), and experts (n = 202) in pediatric nursing, various cases were presented. Each case consisted of a combination of a vignette and a video. Subjects were asked (1) to assess the child's pain intensity, (2) to specify their confidence in the assessment, and (3) to state whether or not they would administer a non-narcotic analgesic. The results indicated that expertis

Multicenter Online Nursing Education to Improve Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis Administration: A Descriptive Post-Education Survey.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) causes preventable harm, and risk-appropriate prophylaxis administration is often suboptimal because of inconsistent practices and gaps in knowledge. The authors disseminated a validated web-based interactive nurse education module on VTE prevention and evaluated nurses' perspectives. METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional electronic post-education survey of trauma nurses was conducted at nine Level I to II centers in the Consortium of Leaders in the study Of Traumatic Thromboembolism (CLOTT) Network. The administrative tasks burden in inpatient units: an observational study to quantify the impact on nursing staff's working time.

Background Administrative tasks (ATs) are perceived by healthcare workers as something that takes up an inappropriate number of nurses' working time and limits their ability to provide an adequate amount of 'direct care' to their patients. Understanding the kind of ATs mistakenly attributed in this period of staff shortage can be significant in the analysis of the congruence between the nurse's skills and the work/organizational process. In the inpatient units there are some ATs performed by nurses, such as organizing documentation and forms, answering phone calls, planning visits and appointm

Prevalence of medication administration errors and its determinants among nurses in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite nurses being the backbone of patient care, medication administration errors (MAEs) remain a serious risk to patient safety in low-income countries, including Ethiopia. However, the previous review was outdated, included fewer than 10 studies, focused solely on tertiary hospitals, and did not pool determinants. As a result, this meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of MAEs and their determinants among nurses in Ethiopia, addressing gaps in the study setting, time, and outcomes. METHODS: The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO. Observational studies c

Nurse vs physician decision-making in the ED for short acting β2-agonist administration in pediatric asthma.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate triage nurses' clinical judgment in determining short acting β2-agonist bronchodilator therapy need for children with shortness of breath in the pediatric emergency department, without prior physician assessment. METHODS: This prospective study compared decision-making between triage nurses and physicians regarding bronchodilator inhalation therapy necessity. Trained nurses assessed children aged 2-18 with shortness of breath, including history-taking, vital signs, and lung auscultation. Nurses made short acting β2-agonist therapy decisions based on predefined criteria.

Repeat emergency department visits by nursing home residents: a cohort study using health administrative data.

BACKGROUND: Nursing home (NH) residents are frequent users of emergency departments (ED) and while prior research suggests that repeat visits are common, there is little data describing this phenomenon. Our objectives were to describe repeat ED visits over one year, identify risk factors for repeat use, and characterize "frequent" ED visitors. METHODS: Using provincial administrative data from Ontario, Canada, we identified all NH residents 65 years or older who visited an ED at least once between January 1 and March 31, 2010 and then followed them for one year to capture all additional ED vi

Evaluating the "right@home" randomized trial of nurse home visiting using linked administrative data at school transition.

INTRODUCTION: Nurse home visiting (NHV) is designed to redress child and maternal health inequities, but long-term evaluation is hampered by sample attrition. Evaluation using administrative data has the potential to overcome attrition through provision of a more complete outcome profile. Australia's "right@home" trial is the only long-running evaluation of NHV designed for a population with universal healthcare. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of the NHV program on children's health and development outcomes and service use, compared with usual care (comparator), using linked administr

3D Virtual Reality Smartphone Training for Chemotherapy Drug Administration by Non-oncology Nurses: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Chemotherapy agents are cytotoxic materials. Thus, there is a need for the operators to be familiar with the knowledge and procedures before operation. We conducted a randomized controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of an immersive 3D VR teaching of chemotherapy administration operated in a smartphone coupled with a visual and audio device. We adopted a two-arm single-blind design and recruited 83 nurses, and they were randomized using a cluster approach. The VR group learned chemotherapy administration through VR, while the controlled group learned through document reading. The Kno

CE: Original Research: Antineoplastic Drug Administration by Pregnant and Nonpregnant Nurses: An Exploration of the Use of Protective Gloves and Gowns.

UNLABELLED: : Background: Many antineoplastic (chemotherapeutic) drugs are known or probable human carcinogens, and many have been shown to be reproductive toxicants in cancer patients. Evidence from occupational exposure studies suggests that health care workers who have long-term, low-level occupational exposure to antineoplastic drugs have an increased risk of adverse reproductive outcomes. It's recommended that, at minimum, nurses who handle or administer such drugs should wear double gloves and a nonabsorbent gown to protect themselves. But it's unclear to what extent nurses do.
