Microinterventional system for robot-assisted gonioscopic surgery- technical feasibility and preclinical evaluation in synthetic eye models.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical technical feasibility study of robot-assisted microinvasive glaucoma surgery using a novel ophthalmic robot-assisted surgery system. METHODS: Feasibility was assessed in synthetic eye models in two stages: Stage I, nonimplantable robot-assisted goniotomy; and Stage II, robot-assisted stent implantation using a trabecular bypass stent. Robot-assisted interventions were subsequently compared to the manual approach. RESULTS: Stage I: Two surgeons completed 10 trials each of ab-interno sectoral goniotomy with and without robotic assistance for at least 3 clock hours using

Clinical outcomes of endoscope-assisted vitrectomy for treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

SUMMARY: We evaluated the clinical outcomes for ophthalmic endoscope-assisted vitrectomy in consecutive patients with uncomplicated rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). The primary success rate was 98.4% (125/127) without performing a posterior drainage retinotomy or using perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCL) for subretinal fluid drainage. PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical outcomes of endoscope-assisted vitrectomy in patients with uncomplicated RRD. METHODS: We examined 127 eyes from consecutive patients who underwent repair of RRD by 23- or 25-gauge endoscope-assisted vitrectomy, with a mi

[Internal medicine and cardiovascular evaluation of preoperative and perioperative patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery].

Ophthalmic surgery would a surgical practice with fewer complications compared to other types of surgery. This is only true in part, because of the elderly population of reference. So, in cataract surgery we are faced with a patient with heart disease which carries the signs of aging and degenerative consequences linked to it. The interventions performed in patients with heart disease are still potentially have a greater risk, although site preparation and monitoring during and after surgery in recent years have allowed greater safety for patients and an overall reduction in morbidity and mort

Progress in central retinal artery occlusion: a narrative review.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a catastrophic ophthalmic emergency that severely impairs a patient's visual function, often reducing visual acuity to counting fingers or worse. Progress in CRAO research has provided new information regarding its epidemiological characteristics and led to useful assessments through various ophthalmic examinations. Additional insights about CRAO have been gained through studies of its pathophysiological mechanisms, improving intervention timing and enhancing patient prognosis. Treatment for CRAO has evolved, particularly with assistance from surgical

The impact of demographics and positioning on the imaging features of the optic nerve sheath and ophthalmic vessels.

BACKGROUND: There are significant discrepancies in the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) reported in the literature. We aimed to determine the ultrasonographic imaging features of ONSD and ophthalmic vessels in a healthy population, using a standardized protocol, and to estimate the effect of demographics and positioning changes on imaging measurements. METHODS: We measured the mean values of the ONSD in supine and sitting position and the Doppler imaging parameters of the ophthalmic, central retinal and short posterior ciliary arteries. Inter-observer reliability was assessed using intracla

Microsaccade Characteristics in Neurological and Ophthalmic Disease.

Microsaccade research has recently reached a critical mass of studies that allows, for the first time, a comprehensive review of how microsaccadic dynamics change in neurological and ophthalmic disease. We discuss the various pathological conditions that affect microsaccades, their impact on microsaccadic and other fixational eye movement dynamics, and the incipient studies that point to microsaccadic features as potential indicators of differential and early diagnoses of multiple clinical conditions, from movement disorders to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder to amblyopia. We propose

Examination techniques and therapeutic regimens for the ruminant and camelid eye.

A step-wise procedure and necessary equipment for examination of the ruminant and camelid eye are detailed. Restraint techniques and usage of local anesthetics to facilitate examination are described. Common examination findings and their significance are discussed. Finally, therapeutic options for keratoconjunctivitis and uveitis are explored. A complete ocular examination of ruminants is often not performed in the field because of lack of time, lack of appropriate facilities, and/or lack of equipment. Although individual ophthalmic examinations are not frequently performed as part of a herd

[Orbital apex syndrome in a child with Wegener's granulomatosis].

The authors report the case of a 10 year-old child presenting with orbital apex syndrome as the initial manifestation of Wegener's granulomatosis. Orbital apex syndrome is characterized by complete or partial paralysis of the third, fourth and sixth cranial nerves with involvement of the trigeminal nerve's ophthalmic branch. The different mechanisms responsible for ocular complications in Wegener's granulomatosis and the usefulness of computer assisted tomography in this clinical situation are discussed.

Ophthalmic manifestations of lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmic involvement in lymphoma is a relatively rare condition that can result from a primary intraocular lymphoma or an intraocular manifestation of systemic lymphoma. This report reviews the ophthalmic manifestations of lymphoma. METHODS: Review of relevant information from journal articles and Internet search. RESULTS: Almost all the structures in the orbit, adnexiae and eye can be involved in lymphoma. Lymphoma of the eye and adnexiae are most frequently of B lineage. Most of the ocular manifestations frequently masquerade as other more benign intraocular conditions includ

Ophthalmic manifestations of fronto-ethmoidal mucocoeles: a report of five cases.

Fronto-ethmoidal mucocoele is rare and will cause visual impairment and blindness when management is belated. In order to improve the awareness of its ophthalmic manifestations and problems associated with its management we retrospectively analyzed clinical, radiological and histological features in five illustrative cases. They all presented with unilateral supra-orbital swellings and proptosis, antedated by head injury in two cases. Other ophthalmic manifestations included eye lid swelling, progressive visual loss, unilateral ptosis, exotropia and diplopia. Only two patients had nasal sympto

Deep learning model using cross-sequence learning to identify orbital fractures in radiographs of patients under 20 Years.

Orbit fractures under 20 years are a medical emergency requiring urgent surgery with the gold standard modality being high-resolution CT. If radiography could be used to identify patients without fractures, the number of unnecessary CT scans could be reduced. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a deep learning-based multi-input model with a novel cross-sequence learning method, which outperforms the conventional single-input models, to detect orbital fractures on radiographs of young patients. Development datasets for this retrospective study were acquired from two hospitals

29 Production of ultra-thin decellularised dermis to treat severe ocular diseases.

INTRODUCTION: The ocular surface may be damaged by several ocular conditions such as chemical trauma, infection, neoplasia or autoimmune disease causing a loss of tissue and function leading to a painful loss of vision. Tissue regeneration is needed to re-establish homeostasis of the ocular surface and to preserve vision. Present replacement strategies have limitations ranging from availability of the same type of tissue to long-term stability. NHSBT currently produces decellularised dermis (DCD) for clinical allografting; comprising a "thin" (up to 1.0 mm) and a thick (>1.2 mm) DCD, used to t

Vision and vision loss.

To provide supportive and effective care to people who must adapt to blindness or visual impairment, nurses and other health care professionals have a responsibility to be knowledgeable about the unique effect of ophthalmic disorders on the body, spirit, and mind. It is also evident that nurses must clearly understand their own emotions and social reactions to blindness and visual loss so that they can more clearly assist their clients through adaptation.

Wearable technologies in ophthalmic care and visual science.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Wearable technologies may enable eyecare practitioners to assess visual function, behaviour, environmental exposure, and treatment needs beyond the clinic. However, most applications require stronger clinical validation, usability evaluation, and evidence of patient benefit before routine implementation. BACKGROUND: Wearable devices may extend ophthalmic assessment and support beyond episodic clinic visits by capturing visual behaviour, environmental exposure, task performance, and ocular or periocular physiological signals. METHODS: This scoping review mapped English-lan

Situation analysis on the integration of refractive error services provided by optometrists into the national health services in Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Even though the burden of uncorrected refractive error could potentially be addressed through innovative and cost-effective approaches, integration of the services into the National Health Services (NHS) is desirable. However, minimal information exists on the current situation warranting the need for evidence about the integration of refractive error service provided by optometrists into the national health services in Kenya. METHODS: A situation analysis of the Kenyan refractive error services provided by optometrists within the NHS was undertaken based on access to service de

Novel Uses and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Diagnosing and Managing Eyes with High Myopia and Pathologic Myopia.

Myopia is a global health issue, and the prevalence of high myopia has increased significantly in the past five to six decades. The high incidence of myopia and its vision-threatening course emphasize the need for automated methods to screen for high myopia and its serious form, named pathologic myopia (PM). Artificial intelligence (AI)-based applications have been extensively applied in medicine, and these applications have focused on analyzing ophthalmic images to diagnose the disease and to determine prognosis from these images. However, unlike diseases that mainly show pathologic changes i
