Phase diversity improves retinal image quality in adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy.

The quality of retinal images is compromised by aberrations that remain uncorrected even in confocal adaptive optics imaging. This study demonstrates phase diversity (PD), a computational imaging technique, to address residual aberrations and enhance image quality in adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO). By using images of the same object obtained with and without deliberately added aberrations, PD computes and compensates for the effects of existing residual aberrations beyond those corrected by a closed-loop AO system. Experimental validation demonstrates that PD improves vi

Comparing diabetic retinopathy lesions in scanning laser ophthalmoscopy and colour fundus photography.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the detection of different lesions of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) compared to colour fundus photographs within the same retinal field. METHODS: Scanning laser ophthalmoscopy and colour fundus photographs of 67 eyes taken on the same day of dilated patients with different grades of diabetic retinopathy were retrospectively examined. SLO images were then cropped to match the size and position of its 45-degree colour fundus photograph equivalent. Five independent masked graders assessed the images. Features of DR including haemorrhages, m

Congenital optic tract syndrome: magnetic resonance imaging and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy findings.

Lesions of the optic tract produce a distinctive pattern of optic atrophy and visual field loss and may be due to either congenital or acquired causes. We report a case of a congenital optic tract syndrome and correlate the magnetic resonance imaging findings with the appearance of nerve fiber layer defects found by confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy.

[Ring-like figures in the fundus oculi detected by ophthalmoscopy in transformed light].

Examinations of the fundus oculi in red-free polarized light, carried out in 19 patients (12 with albinism and 7 with the albinotic type of the fundus oculi) have revealed for the first time a peculiar ring-like figure. Since there is no evidence that this figure is formed by retinal folds, the authors suppose that it may result from light wave interference. Light waves on the fundus oculi of albinos may be reflected not only by the internal border membrane, but by Bruch's membrane or sclera as well. These waves, overlapping each other, form a figure identical to Newton's interference rings. T

Carbon disulfide effects on the visual system. I. Visual thresholds and ophthalmoscopy.

The visual effects of carbon disulfide exposure were studied in macaque monkeys with measurements of visual thresholds, fluorescein angiography and fundus photography. Five monkeys were exposed by inhalation for 6 hr a day, 5 days a week to 256 ppm carbon disulfide (CS2). The motor dysfunction observed in these monkeys appeared to be entirely reversible. All five suffered severe reductions in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity although flicker resolution was not affected. Visual loss was found to be irreversible, with degeneration of substantial numbers of retinal ganglion cells (companion

Confocal Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy to Image Retinal Ganglion Cells in Real-Time.

Real-time imaging of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) provides an opportunity for detailed investigation of retinal development, disease mechanisms, and the evaluation of interventions affecting ocular structures. Here we use a transgenic model to describe a step-by-step protocol for visualizing RGC survival in real-time by using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (cSLO).

Screening for mouse retinal degenerations. I. Correlation of indirect ophthalmoscopy, electroretinograms, and histology.

Mice with hereditary retinal degeneration have provided excellent models for human disease of the biochemical and physiological events occurring in retinal degeneration. Since a number of mouse models are available for other human conditions, more mouse retinal degenerations would be expected to be known; however, finding new models has proved difficult since the search has usually involved laborious histologic screening. We applied the clinical technique of indirect ophthalmoscopy to screen mice for retinal degeneration and then used electroretinography and histology to determine whether true

Smartphone ophthalmoscopy for assessment of hypertensive retinopathy in suspected hypertensive emergency: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Fundoscopy is of pivotal importance in patients with suspected hypertensive emergency in order to detect hypertensive retinopathy and determine the need for prompt intravenous antihypertensive treatment. However, direct fundoscopy by an ophthalmologist is time-consuming and delays treatment. In this pilot study in the emergency department (ED), we evaluated whether smartphone ophthalmoscopy is a feasible and faster alternative. METHODS: We evaluated duration of ED-treatment in patients who underwent smartphone ophthalmoscopy for suspected hypertensive emergency. Smartphone ophthal
