Central Asian republics: a case study for medical education reform.

Social, political, and economic changes in the former Soviet Union precipitated both the collapse of a once-centralized medical education system in the region and the development of individual models in its place. In the context of rapid globalization and international concerns about health, this development of "nation-based" models for the structure, content, language, and duration of instruction generated concerns about regional accreditation; workforce planning; student qualifications; residency training; continuing education; and infrastructure, such as access to literature, an adequate cl

If a Bed Is Just a Bed, What Does That Make the Nurse? Nurses' Negotiations of Identity in a Contested Discursive Terrain-An Institutional Ethnography.

A person-centred approach in healthcare has garnered increasing global attention and is promoted in research and by the WHO as an approach that holds potential for improving the quality of healthcare, patient safety and nurses' work environment. This, in turn, supports the recruitment and retention of nurses. This institutional ethnography is situated on a Danish University hospital where a person-centred approach is central to the hospitals' visions, goals and strategy in nursing practice. We explore the connections between institutional discourses and nurses' negotiations of meaning and iden

Improving the food environment in Colorado hospitals: a case study.

Implementation of Food Service Guidelines (FSG) can improve nutritious offerings and individual health behaviors. This case study demonstrates how a state health department supported hospitals to improve their nutrition environments. The Colorado Healthy Hospital Compact (the Compact) is a statewide initiative designed to implement FSG to improve hospital nutrition environments by increasing the availability of healthier foods and beverages and reducing or eliminating unhealthy items. Developed and implemented by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), hospitals volun

Rethinking Environmentally Sustainable Chronic Care: A Canadian Case Study of Funded Small House Models.

Canada's healthcare system faces increasing strain as patients who could be managed in alternative levels of care (ALCs) occupy acute hospital beds. The small house model (SHM) offers an opportunity to alleviate the growing burden on hospitals and long-term care facilities while supporting environmentally sustainable care. This case study quantifies the greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint of two facilities in Hamilton, Ontario. Annual emissions were 1,612 kg CO2e/bed and 512 kg CO2e/bed, respectively, with travel contributing significantly to emissions. Our study provides a baseline GHG footprint o

Factors influencing national public health governance capacity: based on NCA and fsQCA.

INTRODUCTION: With the acceleration of globalization, a series of public health emergencies have not only threatened population health but also significantly impacted global economic and political stability, highlighting the urgency for effective public health governance. METHODS: This study employs the TOE framework to examine 149 countries as case studies, utilizing Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to investigate the interactive effects and pathway selections of technological, organizational, and environmental conditions on national p

Promising practices for the collaborative planning of integrated health campaigns from a synthesis of case studies.

A combination of public health campaigns and routine primary healthcare services are used in many countries to maximise the number of people reached with interventions to prevent, control, eliminate or eradicate diseases. Health campaigns have historically been organised within vertical (disease-specific) programmes, which are often funded, planned and implemented independently from one another and from routinely offered primary healthcare services. Global health agencies have voiced support for enhancing campaign effectiveness, including campaign efficiency and equity, through collaboration a

Deep learning-based labor relations prediction system with multi-source data fusion and early warning mechanisms.

Predicting workplace conflicts before they escalate into formal disputes or collective action represents a persistent challenge in organizational management, one that traditional statistical methods and expert judgment systems address inadequately due to labor relations' complex, multi-factorial nature. We present a deep learning-based early warning system that integrates heterogeneous organizational data-HR records, communication logs, performance trajectories, satisfaction surveys, and external economic indicators-through attention-based multi-modal fusion, explicitly designed to capture bot

Shaped by asymmetrical interdependence: a qualitative case study of the external influences on international non-governmental organizations' implementation of equity principles in HIV/AIDS work.

INTRODUCTION: Addressing inequities is a key role for international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) working in health and development. Yet, putting equity principles into practice can prove challenging. In-depth empirical research examining what influences INGOs' implementation of equity principles is limited. This study examined the influences on one INGO's implementation of equity principles in its HIV/AIDS programs. METHODS: This research employed a case study with nested components (an INGO operating in Kenya, with offices in North America). We used multiple data collection methods

Knowledge network for medical technology management in Mexico.

OBJECTIVES: The role of biomedical engineers (BMEs) has changed widely over the years, from managing a group of technicians to the planning of large installations and the management of medical technology countrywide. As the technology has advanced, the competence of BMEs has been challenged because it is no longer possible to be an expert in every component of the technology involved in running a hospital. Our approach has been to form a network of professionals that are experts in different fields related to medical technology, where work is coordinated to provide high quality services at the

Occupational rehabilitation services provided by a community workers health centre in Hong Kong: a case study.

BACKGROUND: In Hong Kong, the Employees' Compensation Ordinance (ECO), based on the model of the English Workmen's Compensation Act 1943, establishes a no-fault, non-contributory system for work injuries. It focuses merely on the minimum social expectation in compensating injured workers in monetary terms, but does not place much emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation and return to work policies for workers with injury. There is a need to reform an effective and comprehensive occupational rehabilitation system for workers with work injury in Hong Kong. METHODS: This paper presents a case stud

Facilitation of risk communication during the anthrax attacks of 2001: the organizational backstory.

The anthrax attacks of 2001 created risk communication problems that cannot be fully understood without appreciating the dynamics among organizations. Case studies of communication in New Jersey, consisting of interviews with a range of participants, found that existing organizational and professional networks facilitated trust among decisionmakers. This interpersonal trust improved communication among agencies and thereby risk communication with the public. For example, "white powder scares" were a problem even in places without contamination. Professionals' trust in each other was vital for

Factors contributing to successful interorganizational collaboration: the case of CS2day.

Continuing medical education's transition from an emphasis on dissemination to changing clinical practice has made it increasingly necessary for CME providers to develop effective interorganizational collaborations. Although interorganizational collaboration has become commonplace in most sectors of government, business, and academia, our review of the literature and experience as practitioners and researchers suggest that the practice is less widespread in the CME field. The absence of a rich scholarly literature on establishing and maintaining interorganizational collaborations to provide co

How Is Equity-Based Co-Creation Enacted in Health and Social Services? An Evaluation of Four Case Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Co-creation processes are part of a movement to create change in collaboration with people with lived and living experience (PWLLE); in this paper we focus on experience with health and social services. Research co-creation with PWLLE is increasing, however, processes tend to include people who are well connected in health and research environments, often excluding equity-deserving groups (EDGs) who experience barriers to engagement in research and society more broadly (e.g., people with mental health conditions, immigrants, refugees, people who are unhoused). METHODS: We conduc

Factors Influencing the Sustainability of Neglected Tropical Disease Elimination Programs: A Multi-Case Study of the Kenya National Program for Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis.

Elimination of a disease is the holy grail in global health. The pathology of several neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as lymphatic filariasis (LF) makes elimination a reality. However, successful elimination requires that NTD programs be sustainable-the ability to confirm that the disease has been eliminated and the capacity to ensure that it does not return. The WHO's guidelines on NTDs thoroughly detail how to reach elimination. Notwithstanding, comprehensive guidance regarding contextual and programmatic factors that influence sustainability is lacking. Moreover, a comprehensive NTD

Recruitment and retention of health professionals across Europe: A literature review and multiple case study research.

Many European countries are faced with health workforce shortages and the need to develop effective recruitment and retention (R&R) strategies. Yet comparative studies on R&R in Europe are scarce. This paper provides an overview of the measures in place to improve the R&R of health professionals across Europe and offers further insight into the evidence base for R&R; the interaction between policy and organisational levels in driving R&R outcomes; the facilitators and barriers throughout these process; and good practices in the R&R of health professionals across Europe. The study adopted a mul

Innovative cross-system and community approaches for the prevention of child maltreatment.

Because of the complexity and depth of problems facing children and families today, child protection can be best accomplished through a community effort--not simply through the efforts of the traditional child welfare system and other child- and family-serving agencies. Community-based initiatives supporting families and individuals are promising mechanisms through which to efficiently reach a wide range of community members consistent with a public health model. This conceptual paper describes the principles of community-based approaches for the prevention of child maltreatment and briefly de

A case study on the application of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)-based tools for vocational rehabilitation in spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVES: Vocational rehabilitation (VR) plays a key role in bringing persons with acquired disabilities back to work, while encouraging employment participation. The purpose of this case study is to illustrate the systematic application of International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF)-based documentation tools by using ICF Core Sets in VR shown with a case example of a client with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). PARTICIPANT: The client was a 26-year-old male with paraplegia (7th thoracic level), working in the past as a mover. METHODS: This case study descr

Resident education in the radiological sciences: what now?

OBJECTIVE: With the dizzying changes in the rapidly evolving profession of radiology, the structure of resident education in the associated sciences of imaging, physics, radiobiology, and radiation effects must be reevaluated continually. What roles do these basic radiologic sciences play in bolstering the neophyte radiologist on a career of patient care? How should we define the spectrum of material that should be learned? How should that spectrum be taught? Who decides these things? With the impending changes in the radiology board certification process, questions have been raised as to how
