BACKGROUND: Missing maxillary lateral incisors create an esthetic problem with specific orthodontic and prosthetic considerations. The purpose of this article is to describe treatment protocols and problems encountered in the management of this disorder.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The two common treatment options are orthodontic space opening for future restorations or orthodontic space closure using canines to replace the missing maxillary lateral incisors. The required amount of space opening and the various prosthetic options are discussed. The methods for reshaping canines in orthodontic space clo

RATIONALE: Orthognathic surgery cases are inherently challenging to treat with lingual appliances due to the complexities of orthodontic management and difficulties in achieving intermaxillary fixation during surgery. This challenge is further amplified in cases involving asymmetric space closure, such as those with a missing molar on one side and a premolar on the other, a scenario not yet documented in the literature. This case report presents the orthodontic-orthognathic management of an adult patient requiring space closure of asymmetric missing lower teeth.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 30-year-ol

A common dilemma in adult orthodontic treatment is deciding how best to treat missing posterior teeth. One treatment option is to orthodontically close the space. But closure can be difficult, especially if the open space is in the maxillary posterior area, because tooth movement through the maxillary sinus is limited. The increased difficulty of moving teeth in the maxillary sinus is similar to moving a tooth in the atrophic posterior mandibular ridge. If space closure is selected as a treatment method, proper mechanics and light forces should be applied. In this article, we report movement o

INTRODUCTION: This research aimed to evaluate the impact of orthodontic treatment on a young person's oral health-related quality of life, self-esteem, and esthetics concerning hypodontia.
METHODS: A prospective longitudinal hospital-based study recruited 97 participants with hypodontia, aged 11-18 years. Forty-one participants (42%) originally planned to have space closure and the remainder space opening, with subsequent prosthetic replacement. The following questionnaires were completed before and after orthodontic treatment: the child perception questionnaire, Bristol condition-specific qu

OBJECTIVES: To identify changes in orthodontic management strategies in patients with hypodontia seen in 2000, 2010, and 2017/2018 (during a 1-year period).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An assessment of the panoramic radiographs of 3701 patients from a Western Australian private practice identified 276 individuals demonstrating hypodontia. The location of missing teeth, age, sex, type of malocclusion, and the management strategies (space closure or opening) for each patient were noted.
RESULTS: Most hypodontia involved agenesis of three or fewer teeth (90%). Maxillary lateral incisors and mandibul

UNLABELLED: This paper sets out to discuss the treatment options available for the management of patients with agenesis of second premolars. These include: retention of the deciduous molar, extraction followed by space closure, extraction and utilization of the space for the correction of malocclusion and extraction followed by restoration of the edentulous space.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Congenital absence of second premolars is a common clinical problem faced by practitioners. Dentists should be aware of the treatment options when managing such cases.

The treatment of young patients with missing maxillary incisors poses a challenge to prosthodontists and orthodontists. The 2 principal treatment options are (1) the reopening or maintenance of space for future autotransplantation and/or prosthodontic restoration of the missing teeth, or (2) total orthodontic space closure, followed by prosthodontic modification of the lateral incisors to simulate the central incisors. This article discusses only the second option and describes 2 alternative methods for the modification of crown anatomy. These procedures facilitate the orthodontic closure of m

Free crown tipping can be useful when teeth do not erupt in their physiologic sequence and a real intraosseous migration and eruption of a single tooth into a distant ectopic position can be observed. This article presents a case of an ectopic mandibular lateral incisor treated early, with the light-force technique and uncontrolled forces, and finished with the bidimensional edgewise appliance. A Caucasian female patient, 10 years 10 months of age, had a mandibular left lateral incisor displacement, with the lateral incisor crown positioned mesial to left second primary molar. An early treatme

The successful treatment of congenitally missing teeth (CMT) a common dental anomaly that affects third molars and lateral incisors requires addressing multiple challenges that frequently accompany the missing teeth. The biggest concern among patients presenting with CMT usually is esthetics. In this case report, an interdisciplinary diagnostic approach is described for conservatively managing the anatomic and esthetic challenges of a 32 year old woman with this condition, whose main objective was to gain an appealing smile without compromising intact teeth. By utilizing space management techn

Tooth gemination is a dental phenomenon in which a single tooth bud attempts to divide into two, resulting in the formation of a structure that appears as two teeth but originates from the same follicle. This partial separation is often indicated clinically by a groove or depression that suggests the presence of two distinct teeth (Rajeswari M, Ananthalakshmi R. 2011. Gemination-case report and review. Indian Journal of Multidisciplinary Dentistry). The distinction between gemination and fusion plays an important role in treatment planning. If the number of teeth is one less, the tooth is fuse

Rarely is the extraction of the four first molars the ideal choice in the course of orthodontic treatment, particularly in older patients. Although this approach can offer distinct advantages in carefully selected patients, it is also associated with a number of well-recognized problems, including the extension of treatment times, anchorage management, and control of second molars during space closure. However, by careful use of contemporary materials and techniques, a high standard of treatment can be achieved, even in patients with complex malocclusions. This is illustrated in a report of a

A congenitally missing lateral incisor tooth is commonly associated with both short and long-term clinical dilemmas, particularly for a growing patient. A unilaterally missing maxillary lateral incisor tooth creates a significant dental asymmetry in the critical aesthetic zone of the smile and potentially increases the difficulty of any subsequent orthodontic and restorative treatment. Carefully planned interdisciplinary management is required to address the challenges of anterior dental asymmetry, unilateral orthodontic space closure and to alleviate the concerns that accompany restorative im

We aimed to find out whether extraction of lower premolars and subsequent closure of the space by a fixed appliance influenced the chances of mandibular third molars erupting. We compared angular and linear measurements of lower third molars on dental panoramic tomograms in 30 orthodontic patients with similar measurements from 30 patients with impacted third molars in intact arches. We found that the mesial angulation of lower third molars was reduced from 50 degrees to 43 degrees by orthodontic treatment (P< 0.001). Distance to the occlusal plane was reduced from 12 mm to 10 mm (P< 0.001). T

In our study 37 transplanted and 33 mesialized molars by orthodontics were clinically and radiologically compared. The teeth moved by orthodontics showed a better long-term prognosis. As vital teeth with functioning periodontal structures and only slightly shortened roots they were equivalent to healthy teeth. However, the disadvantage of orthodontic space closure is the requirement of a good compliance due to long treatment time. The prognosis of maintaining a transplanted tooth germ is uncertain. One third of the teeth showed an altered periodontium with resorption areas. The danger of a con

Malocclusion has been seriously endangering human oral function. The most effective and mature therapy is orthodontic treatment. But the relationship between the shape of the T-loop and the orthodontic force is unclear, and the precise mathematical model has not been established. In this article, the dynamic orthodontic force prediction model of the T-loop was established by analyzing the treatment process of the T-loop. The model was based on the dynamic resistance model of waxy dental jaw, the theory of beam deformation, and the deformation characteristics of the T-loop. In the experimental
