Stability, survival and costs of vacuum-formed retainers versus bonded lingual braided rectangular and multistranded round wire retainers in the mandible of orthodontic patients over a two-year period.

BACKGROUND: To assess the efficacy in relation to costs of three retention techniques: vacuum-formed retainers (VFR) with lingual-bonded braided and multistranded wire retainers in the mandible. METHODS: A total of 93 participants, aged 12–21 years at the start of the retention phase (median age: 16 years; 66% females) were assessed. Analysis included retainer survival rate, costs associated with retention procedures, degree of mandibular incisor irregularity, and patient satisfaction. The cost-minimization analysis accounted for direct costs (material and production expenses, utility costs, a

A novel pre-surgical maxillary orthodontic device using β-titanium wire for wide unilateral cleft lip and palate patients: preliminary study of its efficacy and impact for the maxillary formation.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: For patients with a wide, complete, unilateral cleft lip and palate, pre-surgical maxillary orthodontic treatments have been used to reduce the alveolar gap before cheiloplasty. However, most of these treatments are complicated and laborious for patients and for medical professionals. Thus, we developed an original pre-surgical orthodontic device made with two separate acrylic resin plates connected with a spring-shaped β-titanium wire (β-TW). When the device was applied on the palate, each segment of the maxilla was automatically aligned for our target formation with the e

Comparison of Surface Roughness of Different Orthodontic Archwires: Atomic Force Microscopic Study.

BACKGROUND: Surface roughness (SR) of dental components is significant because it impacts the surface area of the contact surface, which in turn affects corrosion behavior and biological compatibility. Orthodontic archwires (OA) with SR can affect the coefficient of friction, which in turn affects how effectively sliding biomechanics work and how the orthodontic appliance works efficiently. AIM: The objectives of the present investigation were to examine the SR of five distinct kinds of OA using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and to assess the merits of using AFM to analyze orthodontic mate

Research to Improve Fixed Orthodontic Treatment of Thirty Six Angle Class II Severe Malocclusions with Premolar Extractions Using a Modified Orthodontic Scientific Simulator.

This study aimed to evaluate the new orthodontic TiNb wires in direct comparison to the gold standard in orthodontics, NiTi wires, when treating. There is limited literature on patients with severe malocclusions being treated from start to end with TiNb, and TiNb wires were mostly used in the final stages of treatment. Our protocol consisted of three orthodontic wires: 0.016, 0.016 × 0.025, and 0.019 × 0.025 for levelling and aligning the stage and 0.019 × 0.025 stainless steel for the finishing stage, in order to treat the same case reproduced on a modified scientific simulator. Surface topography of plain nickel-titanium (NiTi), as-received aesthetic (coated) NiTi, and aesthetic NiTi archwires sterilized by autoclaving or glutaraldehyde immersion: A profilometry/SEM/AFM study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Surface topography is a crucial factor in bracket sliding mechanics. Literature on surface roughness of aesthetic archwires is scarce, and there is no study on surface topography of such archwires affected by any sterilization methods. The aim of this study was to compare the surface topography of plain nickel-titanium (NiTi) versus as-received aesthetic coated NiTi wires versus aesthetic wires sterilized by autoclaving or glutaraldehyde immersion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This in vitro study was performed on 80 atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations, 160 profilometry ob

Using the Finite Element Method to Determine the Odonto-Periodontal Stress for a Patient with Angle Class II Division 1 Malocclusion.

The finite element method (FEM) is a computational method that can solve all biomechanical problems, including the field of orthodontics. The purpose of this virtual experimental study is to determine the behavior of a real orthodontic system subjected to different systems of loads. To analyze the real orthodontic system, we studied the case of a 21-year-old female patient. We used the InVesalius program, which can transform a set of DICOM-type images taken from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) into three-dimensional structures. These structures were edited, modified, completed, and analyz

Wire Syndrome: Periodontal Complications and Management.

Lingual wire retention is an internationally used modality for long-term orthodontic retention. Although generally safe, some wires become activated, leading to severe and sometimes irreversible periodontal complications. These complications are not widely known in the dental profession and have been generally described from an orthodontic perspective. The constellation of issues with activated wires has been referred to as Wire Syndrome. Although some patients are diagnosed within the first 5 years of orthodontic therapy completion, there is a subset of patients that is not diagnosed until mu

Piggyback archwires.

Commonly, clinicians' principal tool in the alignment phase of orthodontic mechanotherapy is the nickel-titanium wire. During the course of orthodontic treatment, however, there are times when some segments of the dental arch require flexible wires, while the rest would benefit from rigid wires. In this report, we describe a technique where both of these needs are satisfied simultaneously. Specifically, a segment of nickel-titanium wire is piggybacked onto a stainless steel wire in regions where flexibility is desired. This method eliminates the problems associated with the activation, de-acti

Immediate Orthodontic Repositioning of Traumatically Extruded Incisors in a Patient With Cleft Lip and Alveolus: A Case Report.

This case report describes a 15-year-old boy born with a cleft lip and alveolus who sustained severe extrusive and lateral luxation trauma to multiple incisors during the final phase of orthodontic treatment. The displacement caused incisal interference and prevented normal jaw closure. Deformed beta titanium wires were removed, loosened brackets were rebonded, and immediate orthodontic repositioning was initiated using light forces with 0.014-inch CuNiTi round wires combined with manual repositioning. This approach resolved the incisal interference and restored functional occlusion within 1 w

Oral environment temperature changes induced by cold/hot liquid intake.

The use of NiTi shape memory alloys, introduced into orthodontics because of their ability to develop light continuous forces that prove more effective than heavy intermittent forces in the teeth movement, requires the mastering of the functional properties of NiTi wires. More specifically, the recovery force acting on the teeth is a sensitive function of temperature: knowledge of oral temperature modifications is therefore required to understand the stress state modification felt during orthodontic therapy. The temperature modifications induced by cold or hot drink intake in the oral cavity w

[Early orthodontic treatment after periodontal surgery: a randomized controlled trial].

INTRODUCTION: The pathological teeth migrations require correct multidisciplinary treatment which consists of periodontal surgery associated with early or late orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to know which of the two orthodontic treatments would have a better periodontal response. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Two parameters, radiological (the height of the alveolar bone) and clinical (the depth of the periodontal pocket), were used to meet the objective of this work. Eighteen patients received early orthodontic treatment (straight wire appliance) after periodontal flap debridement su

On the relevance of "ideal" occlusion concepts for incisor inclination target definition.

INTRODUCTION: The concept of "ideal" occlusion in harmony with craniofacial structures is often proposed as an ultimate goal of orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of slight variations in posterior occlusion and the history of straight-wire orthodontic treatment on the predictability of incisor inclination and third-order angles. METHODS: Axial incisor inclinations, third-order angles, and craniofacial relationships were assessed on lateral headfilms and corresponding dental casts of 75 healthy white subjects, 16 to 26 years old, selected by the general inclu

A case of orthodontic splint ingestion misclassified as a sharp/pointed foreign body in a child: A case report.

RATIONALE: Foreign body (FB) ingestion is common, particularly among children. While most FBs pass through the gastrointestinal tract without complications, some cases can lead to morbidity or even mortality. Management strategies depend on the size, sharpness, toxicity, and location of the FB. Plain radiographs are essential for diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up, especially for radiopaque FBs. Ingestion of dental-related FBs is rare, with reported cases involving orthodontic wires, braces, retainers, and other dental materials. Composite resin-wire splints are commonly used in orth
