Concussion in para athletes with vision impairment (VI) is poorly understood. Recently published studies have suggested that athletes with VI may be more likely to sustain sport-related concussions compared to non-disabled athletes and athletes with other impairment types. There is a critical need for objective concussion incidence measures to determine concussion injury rates and risks more accurately. The aim of this review was to examine the limited available evidence of concussion incidence rates across six different para sports for athletes with VI and encourage the future collection of c

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether polymorphisms in SOD2 and SOD3 genes modulate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of Para athletes with dental caries experience. The cross-sectional study included 264 Para athletes (143 in athletics, 61 in weightlifting and 60 in swimming). A trained and calibrated team recorded the decayed, missing and filled teeth index (DMFT). The Brazilian version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was used to measure OHRQoL. Genomic DNA was extracted from the athletes' saliva, and genetic polymorphisms in the SOD2 (rs5746136 and rs10370

INTRODUCTION: Trunk muscle strength is an important performance indicator in para-athletes competing in seated sports and is commonly assessed in classification systems using manual muscle testing (MMT), together with functional and sport-specific tests. Quantitative isometric strength measures may provide complementary information about force-generating capacity. However, the relationship between isometric trunk strength and MMT-assessed trunk and hip strength is not well described in para-athletes with neuromusculoskeletal impairments. This study aimed to examine isometric trunk strength in

This study investigated the test-retest reliability of the countermovement-jump (CMJ) test using Kistler force plates to assess explosive power in top-level para-karate athletes with intellectual impairment (II) or Down syndrome (DS). Forty-four athletes (II, n = 20; DS, n = 24) were evaluated during the 2023 World Karate Championships. Each performed two CMJs with a 1-min rest between. Key parameters measured included jump height, force index, and maximal rate of force development. Results showed no significant differences between test and retest for either group. Athletes with II exhibited b

RaceRunning enables athletes with limited or no walking ability to propel themselves independently using a three-wheeled frame that has a saddle, handle bars and a chest plate. For RaceRunning to be included as a para athletics event, an evidence-based classification system is required. This study assessed the impact of trunk control and lower limb impairment measures on RaceRunning performance and evaluated whether cluster analysis of these impairment measures produces a valid classification structure for RaceRunning. The Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS), Selective Control Assessment of

In para-kayak, athletes with unilateral above knee amputation (AK) and athletes with below knee amputation (BK) compete in the same class. This has been questioned since previous research have shown that the legs are important for paddling performance. The purpose was therefore to examine differences in kinematic and kinetic performance variables between AK and BK para-kayak athletes and the amputated (A) and non-amputated (NA) sides. Eleven AK and six BK athletes on international level participated. 3D kinematic and kinetic data were collected for the body, seat, footrest and paddle during ka

This study aimed to compare neuromuscular fatigability of the elbow flexors and extensors between athletes with amputation (AMP) and athletes with spinal cord injury (SCI) for maximum voluntary force (MVF) and rate of force development (RFD). We recruited 20 para-athletes among those participating at two training camps (2022) for Italian Paralympic veterans. Ten athletes with SCI (two with tetraplegia and eight with paraplegia) were compared to 10 athletes with amputation (above the knee, N = 3; below the knee, N = 6; forearm, N = 1). We quantified MVF, RFD at 50, 100, and 150 ms, and maximal

4 girls with severe allergic contact dermatitis from a brand of athletic tape and a cobbler with allergic contact dermatitis from leather adhesive are presented. Alkylphenol resin with unknown chemical structure had been compounded in both products. One of the girls developed foot dermatitis later from the adhesive used on the inside of new sneakers. By patch testing and chemical analysis of alkylphenol resin and the products, the 5 patients were given a specific diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis from PTBP-FR.

This case report documents the multi-season development of a 38-year-old elite F12 shot putter with macular degeneration (<10% functional vision) who improved from 13.00 m to a personal best of 14.41 m between 2021 and 2023. Athletes classified as F11-F13 compete with significant visual impairment that limits spatial feedback during rotational tasks, yet longitudinal evidence describing integrated training frameworks remains scarce. A 12-month macrocycle integrated phase-dependent velocity-based resistance training using mean concentric velocity targets (0.70-1.00 m·s-1) monitored via linear p

Para athletics is a major Paralympic discipline based on a classification system that minimizes the impact of impairments on performance. This study examines sprint performance differences in ambulant para athletes with coordination impairments (spastic hypertonia, ataxia, dystonia) across 100- and 200-m events by sex, sport class (T35-T38), and competition level. Performance data from Olympic athletes were included as a control group to contextualize the magnitude of differences relevant to the identification of minimal impairment criteria. Data included 5,681 performance observations from 1,
