Epidemiologic History and Genetic Diversity Origins of Chikungunya and Dengue Viruses, Paraguay.

Paraguay has been severely affected by emergent Zika and chikungunya viruses, and dengue virus is endemic. To learn more about the origins of genetic diversity and epidemiologic history of these viruses in Paraguay, we deployed portable sequencing technologies to strengthen genomic surveillance and determine the evolutionary and epidemic history of arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses). Samples stored at the Paraguay National Central Laboratory were sequenced and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. Among 33 virus genomes generated, we identified 2 genotypes of chikungunya and 2 serotypes of de

Ultrasonographic evaluation of postprandial heart variation in juvenile Paraguay anacondas (Eunectes notaeus).

OBJECTIVE: To noninvasively evaluate physiologic postprandial adaptations of the heart in snakes. ANIMALS: 6 juvenile Paraguay anacondas (Eunectes notaeus). PROCEDURES: The heart of each anaconda was echocardiographically evaluated after food was withheld for 28 days as well as 3 and 10 days after feeding. Physical measurements included body length, weight, and circumference at the level of the heart. Echocardiographic measurements included heart rate and 2-D total and internal ventricular area. From these measurements, total ventricular volume as well as the myocardial area as a surrogate o

Longitudinal study of tuberculosis outcomes among immunologically naive Aché natives of Paraguay.

This study documents the course of a tuberculosis epidemic in an immunologically naive group of South American Indians within fewer than 20 years after first sustained contact with outsiders. Groups of Northern Aché (ah-CHAY) of eastern Paraguay were contacted and settled on reservations between 1971-1979. Not surprisingly, the Aché are very susceptible to tuberculosis, and the epidemiological characteristics of the disease are quite different from those of populations that have had tuberculosis for centuries. Within 6 years of the first detected case of tuberculosis among the Aché, the preval

Leishmania major-like parasite, a pathogenic agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Paraguay.

Leishmania parasites isolated from two patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis from geographically different localities in Paraguay have been characterized by enzyme electrophoresis (zymodeme) and digestion profiles of kinetoplast DNA with restriction enzymes (schizodeme). Both Paraguayan isolates showed identical zymodeme profiles to each other using 14 enzymes (glutamic pyruvate transaminase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, enolase, fumarate hydratase, glucose phosphate isomerase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme, mannose phosphate isomerase, nucleoside

[Adherence factors to the gluten-free diet in people with celiac disease in Paraguay].

INTRODUCTION: The adherence to a gluten-free diet in people with celiac disease is a constant challenge for them and their family environment. Not everyone is able to adapt to the new eating style and may develop maladaptive behaviors. The objective was to evaluate the factors of adherence to the gluten-free diet in people with celiac disease in Paraguay in 2023. METHODOLOGY: We perform an observational, cross-sectional design in adolescent and adult subjects with celiac disease. A telematic questionnaire containing demographic and clinical data was applied. The adherence to the diet was eval

The concentration of tuberculosis within Paraguay's incarcerated and Indigenous populations, 2018-2022.

While incidence of tuberculosis (TB) has decreased globally, in Paraguay, considered a medium-incidence country by the WHO, TB incidence has increased slightly from 42 per 100,000 in 2010 to 46 per 100,000 in 2022. We conducted a retrospective study of TB cases notified to the Paraguay National Program for Tuberculosis Control (NPTC) from 2018 to 2022 and quantified trends in specific populations identified as vulnerable. Of the 13,725 TB cases notified in Paraguay from 2018 to 2022, 2,331 (17%) occurred among incarcerated individuals and 1,743 (12.7%) occurred among self-identified Indigenous

Phylogeography and transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis spanning prisons and surrounding communities in Paraguay.

Recent rises in incident tuberculosis (TB) cases in Paraguay and the increasing concentration of TB within prisons highlight the urgency of targeting strategies to interrupt transmission and prevent new infections. However, whether specific cities or carceral institutions play a disproportionate role in transmission remains unknown. We conducted prospective genomic surveillance, sequencing 471 Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex genomes, from inside and outside prisons in Paraguay's two largest urban areas, Asunción and Ciudad del Este, from 2016 to 2021. We found genomic evidence of frequent r

Risk factors associated to bovine brucellosis seroprevalence in the eastern region of Paraguay.

In Paraguay, whose main economic activity is cattle raising, bovine brucellosis is an endemic disease. Between May 2019 and October 2020, a national prevalence survey was implemented by the Paraguayan Veterinary Services. In the frame of that survey, a cross-sectional study was conducted in the eastern region of Paraguay to identify the risk factors that could be associated with brucellosis-positive farms and to estimate the bovine brucellosis seroprevalence and farmers' awareness about the disease. A questionnaire was administered to farmers to collect data on potential risk factors for bovin

A rare case of ectopic dioctophymosis in Leopardus pardalis (Carnivora, Felidae) in Paraguay.

An adult female Leopardus pardalis from Jardín Botánico y Zoológico de Asunción, Paraguay was brought in from the wild, and inspected for a parasitic structure attached to the vulva. The parasite was removed and was identified as a Dioctophyme renale female. Blood samples and ultrasound did not show abnormalities in any organ, confirming the ectopic presentation of the parasite. This is the first report of D. renale in the L. pardalis and a first time for ectopic location in vagina and spontaneous elimination in a felid.

[Intraocular involvement of Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis). Studies in Paraguay/South America].

BACKGROUND: In Central and South America, Chagas' disease is of great epidemiologic importance. The epidemiologic agent is represented by Trypanosoma cruzi, a monocellular parasite, instrumental in human infection is the presence of vectors, which are various species of hematophagous bugs. The eye is one of the most important entrance sites of the parasite, and relatively little information about the relationship between Chagas' disease and eye complications is available. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined 79 chagasic patients in order to detect changes in the retina. As a control group, we ex

New clinical and genomic insights into paracoccidioidomycosis in Paraguay: A neglected endemic area.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic fungal infection caused by Paracoccidioides spp., predominantly affecting individuals in Latin America. While extensive epidemiological and molecular studies have been conducted in Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, where PCM is a recognized public health concern, Paraguay remains largely overlooked. The scarcity of epidemiological and molecular data hinders accurate disease surveillance, early diagnosis, and effective treatment strategies. This study provides the first comprehensive epidemiological and molecular characterization of PCM in Paraguay. We

Prevalence and genetic diversity of Theileria and Anaplasma species infecting cattle in Paraguay.

Bovine theileriosis and anaplasmosis are major tick-borne diseases affecting cattle health and productivity worldwide. Although cattle farming significantly contributes to Paraguay's economy, limited epidemiological data on the causative agents hinder the formulation of disease control measures. To address this challenge, the present study investigated the prevalence, risk factors, and genetic diversity of Theileria annulata, Theileria orientalis, and Anaplasma marginale among cattle populations in Paraguay. Blood DNA samples from 326 cattle in nine departments of Paraguay were screened with t

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in south-eastern Paraguay: a study of an endemic area at Limoy.

An epidemiological study was performed on leishmaniasis in a newly established community in south-eastern Paraguay. 149 persons, of 172 inhabitants, were thoroughly examined by clinical, parasitological and immunological (leishmanin skin test) examinations. 88 of those examined (59%) were clinically positive for dermal and nasal (mucosal) lesions or dermal scars, while 74 (50%) were positive by the leishmanin test. Of the 88 persons, 66 (75%) were positive for both leishmanial (dermal and nasal) signs and skin test; these subjects were therefore considered to be leishmaniasis patients. Most of
