Assessment of barriers for people with disability to enjoy national parks.

There is increasing awareness of the importance of nature-based recreation to human wellbeing. Given its significant benefits, natural-protected area management has not always provided equitable access to all potential users. Limited research till now has been focused on how the outdoor barriers impact the equal enjoyment of people with mobility/motor disabilities (PwMDs) of nature when promoting sustainable nature-based tourism. This study intends to shed light on those aspects which constrain the PwMD's enjoyment of the great outdoors at national parks (NPs). The study was carried out in Can

Diversity and distribution of the tick-borne relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia turicatae.

Borrelia turicatae is a causative agent of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) in the subtropics and tropics of the United States and Latin America. Historically, B. turicatae was thought to be maintained in enzootic cycles in rural areas. However, there is growing evidence that suggests the pathogen has established endemic foci in densely populated regions of Texas. With the growth of homelessness in the state and human activity in city parks, it was important to implement field collection efforts to identify areas where B. turicatae and its vector circulate. Between 2017 and 2020 we collected

Repeated large-scale forest inventory data from an unmanaged European beech forest at Hainich National Park, Germany.

This dataset contains forest inventory data from four censuses (1999, 2007, 2013 and 2023) from a single ~28 ha permanent monitoring plot in a beech-dominated forest that has been unmanaged since 1965 at Hainich National Park, Thuringia, Germany. For each census, the location, species identity and diameter at breast height (dbh) of all living trees with a dbh ≥1 cm was recorded. Additional attributes for living trees include vitality, crown coverage by neighboring trees, sociological class, and observed damages. For trees that died since the previous census, information on cause of mortality,

Context dependent sensory integration modulates landscape preference in urban parks.

Rapid urbanization positions urban parks as critical sensory infrastructure for psychological restoration. However, traditional landscape planning remains constrained by a visually dominant paradigm, often overlooking the non-linear, multisensory dynamics of human perception in complex environments. This study proposes and tests a Context-Dependent Attribute-based Holistic Perception Model (Path B) to investigate how auditory perception and Audiovisual Harmony (AV-Harmony) drive landscape preferences across functionally distinct zones. Utilizing a pooled analysis of three representative park t

Investigating relationships between landscape patterns and surface runoff from a spatial distribution and intensity perspective.

Rapid urbanization changes landscape patterns and results in frequent urban waterlogging issues, which affect citizens' daily lives and cause economic loss. Understanding the spatial patterns and impact factors associated with urban waterlogging under different rainfall intensities has significant implications for mitigating this hazard. In this study, the runoff depth calculated according to the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) simulation results was used to investigate the spatial characteristics of urban waterlogging. Multiple scenario-based designs, a correlation analysis, and a stepwis

Can improving the spatial equity of urban green space mitigate the effect of urban heat islands? An empirical study.

The role of urban green space (UGS) in mitigating the urban heat island (UHI) effect has been demonstrated in a growing body of literature. However, the potential influence of the spatial equity of UGS distribution on the UHI effect has largely been overlooked. The present study aims to identify this potential influence using the spatial equity of UGS and the land surface temperature (LST) as measures of UGS spatial distribution and UHIs, respectively. A comprehensive spatial distribution map of UGS was generated by combining the UGS coverage fraction data within urban impervious pixels and th

Questing Ixodes ricinus ticks and Borrelia spp. in urban green space across Europe: A review.

For more than three decades, it has been recognized that Ixodes ricinus ticks occur in urban green space in Europe and that they harbour multiple pathogens linked to both human and animal diseases. Urban green space use for health and well-being, climate mitigation or biodiversity goals is promoted, often without consideration for the potential impact on tick encounters or tick-borne disease outcomes. This review synthesizes the results of over 100 publications on questing I. ricinus and Borrelia spp. infections in ticks in urban green space in 24 European countries. It presents data on severa

Feral dogs in Chitral gol national park, Pakistan: a potential threat to the future of threatened Kashmir Markhor (Capra falconeri cashmiriensis).

Feral dogs are well-organized hunters of ungulates in many parts of the world, causing great damage to wildlife populations and ultimately to the ecosystem. In Pakistan, the impacts of feral dogs on the wildlife have not been documented yet. In a period of fifteen years (2006-2020), feral dogs have killed hundreds of threatened markhor in Chitral gol national park (CGNP), Pakistan. Despite direct predation other impacts including disturbance and competition with other natural predators, could compromise conservation and management efforts. The population of feral dogs seems to have been increa

Identification and assessment of the driving forces for the use of urban green parks and their accessibility in Colombo, Sri Lanka, through analytical hierarchical processing.

Urban green parks perform a remarkable role for the physical, social and psychological wellbeing of the urban public by providing space for relaxation and recreation, directly influencing public health through mitigation of the urban heat impact, noise reduction and moderation of air and water pollution. An indicator-based approach on analytical hierarchical processing was used to identify and assess the driving forces for the utilization of urban green parks and their accessibility. Eight indicators: location, topography and geography, facility and services, safety and security, social and cu

Associations between park visitation and physical, mental and social health among older adults.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing is a growing public health concern. Parks can play a central role in promoting healthy ageing by offering accessible spaces for physical activity, social interaction, and mental restoration. However, little is known about how older adults use parks across seasons, what activities they engage in, and who they visit with and how this differs according to season and health status. Associations between older adults’ park visitation and health are not well explored, and little is known about reasons for non-visitation. This study among older adults aimed to (1) describ

Relationships between soil health and dynamics of soil potential pathogenic microbiota in functional domains of Xi'an urban greenspaces, China.

Soil potential pathogenic microbiota exacerbate the environment and human health through invading normal tissues of the human body, but their distributions and interactions across functional domains in urban greenspaces are poorly understood. Herein, we collected soil samples from parkland and residential land to explore the relationships between soil health and the dynamics of soil potential pathogenic microbiota. Soil organic matter-associated properties, soil multifunctionality and health were significantly about 30 % higher in parkland, but soil stoichiometry including C/N, C/P, and C/N/P

A study on analysing sociospatial distribution and equity in access to urban parks in Bengaluru, India.

BACKGROUND: Given the effect of urbanisation on land use, allocation, and implementation of urban green spaces, we attempt to analyse the sociospatial distribution and equity in access to urban parks in Bengaluru, India, also known as the garden city of India. METHODS: Geospatial method was used for mapping the park's distribution and measuring the accessibility using road network data. To understand equitable access to the parks, four socioeconomic parameters from 2011 census (ie, population density, children aged 6 years or younger, proxy wealth index, and the Scheduled Caste population) we

Housing Supply and How It Is Related to Social Inequalities-Air Pollution, Green Spaces, Crime Levels, and Poor Areas-In Catalonia.

We carried out a search of over 12,000 houses offered on the rental market in Catalonia and assessed the possibility of families below the poverty threshold being able to rent these homes. In this regard, we wanted to evaluate whether the economic situation of families is able to influence their social environment, surroundings, and safety. We observed how their economic situation can allow families the possibility of developing a life without exposure to health risks, and how economic constraints result in disadvantages in several areas of life. The results show how families at risk of povert

Ambient greenness, access to local green spaces, and subsequent mental health: a 10-year longitudinal dynamic panel study of 2·3 million adults in Wales.

BACKGROUND: Living in greener areas, or close to green and blue spaces (GBS; eg, parks, lakes, or beaches), is associated with better mental health, but longitudinal evidence when GBS exposures precede outcomes is less available. We aimed to analyse the effect of living in or moving to areas with more green space or better access to GBS on subsequent adult mental health over time, while explicitly considering health inequalities. METHODS: A cohort of the people in Wales, UK (≥16 years; n=2 341 591) was constructed from electronic health record data sources from Jan 1, 2008 to Oct 31, 2019, co

Immunological Evidence of Variation in Exposure and Immune Response to Bacillus anthracis in Herbivores of Kruger and Etosha National Parks.

Exposure and immunity to generalist pathogens differ among host species and vary across spatial scales. Anthrax, caused by a multi-host bacterial pathogen, Bacillus anthracis, is enzootic in Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa and Etosha National Park (ENP), Namibia. These parks share many of the same potential host species, yet the main anthrax host in one (greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) in KNP and plains zebra (Equus quagga) in ENP) is only a minor host in the other. We investigated species and spatial patterns in anthrax mortalities, B. anthracis exposure, and the ability to n

Diversity analysis and an updated list of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) found in Cantareira State Park, São Paulo, Brazil.

Cantareira State Park (CSP) is located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, one of the most densely populated areas on the planet. Recently, a yellow-fever epidemic practically annihilated the howler monkey population in this park, and human infections were reported in the vicinity. As simian and human plasmodia also circulate in CSP, the present study sought to provide an update on the mosquito fauna in this park, including an analysis of the diversity in areas with different degrees of conservation and a comparison of the yields achieved with different collection techniques. From October

Caridean prawn (Crustacea, Decapoda) with description of a new species and an invasive crayfish from Yuelu mountain national park, Hunan, China.

Yuelu mountain national park (5A scenic area) is a rare urban mountain scenic area. The major impacts from human activity are growing, such as largely unplanned tourist activity, urbanization, and accelerated the others responsible for environmental changes. It is unavoidable to have great pressure and influence on the diversity of fauna on the scenic area. In order to better understand the diversity of the decapod fauna in the Yuelu mountain national park, an intensive field survey has been carried out. A total of five species was collected, three species of atyid shrimps, Neocaridina palmata

DIAGNOSIS AND IMPLICATIONS OF MYCOBACTERIUM BOVIS INFECTION IN BANDED MONGOOSES (MUNGOS MUNGO) IN THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH AFRICA.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) was first diagnosed in the Kruger National Park (KNP) in 1990. Research has since focused on the maintenance host, the African buffalo ( Syncerus caffer ) and clinically affected lion ( Panthera leo ). However, little is known about the role of small predators in tuberculosis epidemiology. During 2011-12, we screened banded mongooses ( Mungos mungo ) in the bTB high-prevalence zone of the KNP for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex members. Fecal swabs, tracheal swabs, and tracheal lavages of 76 banded mongooses caught in cage traps within a 2-km radius of Skukuza Rest

Regenerating forests around Taï National Park sustain biodiversity despite constrained floristic recovery.

Extensive deforestation and disturbance have reshaped forest landscapes in West Africa, including areas surrounding Taï National Park, the largest remaining block of Upper Guinean rainforest. Although many degraded areas are currently undergoing regeneration, the capacity of these secondary forests to recover their biodiversity attributes remains insufficiently assessed within this park. This study quantifies the multidimensional restoration of biodiversity across 125 secondary forest plots and 15 primary forest plots representing 14,731 inventoried individuals in four sectors of the park. Quality of Urban Green Space for Older Adults to Promote Physical Activity: A Systematic Review.

Regular physical activity (PA) is essential for healthy aging. For older adults residing in urban areas, access to urban green space (UGS) can help increase PA levels. This systematic review examined the association between availability, accessibility, and attractiveness of the UGS on PA among older adults. PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science were searched for articles published 2016-2024 that used quantitative methods to explore associations between the qualities of UGS and measures of PA in this demographic. Findings from nine studies from Europe, China, Hong Kong, and Australia were synthesi
