Exploring the Parasite Biodiversity in Climbing Perch (Anabas testudineus) in Buriram, Thailand: Morphological-Based Characterization.

Anabas testudineus is an amphibious freshwater fish species native to Thailand, which is afflicted by protozoan and metazoan infections. This study was aimed at identifying the presence of parasites in A. testudineus from Thung Lam Natural Reservoir in Buriram Province, Thailand, between November 2022 and January 2023. The analysis of 120 climbing perches indicated a 100% prevalence of parasitic infections. Four species from three phyla and four genera were detected: Trianchoratus aecleithrium, a monogenean trematode found on gill filaments, and three intestinal parasites: Pallisentis nagpuren

Transcriptome analysis identifies potential molecular mechanisms for growth of fast muscle in Chinese perch juvenile.

Chinese perch (Siniperca chuatsi) is an important commercial fish species in China. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of growth and development of skeletal muscle is helpful for selection breeding and improving the growth rate of Chinese perch. We analyzed histological and transcriptomic differences in fast muscle of Chinese perch between 30 days post hatching (dph) and 60 dph using histological sections and high-throughput RNA-Seq. The results showed that the diameter of muscle fibers in 30 dph Chinese perch was mainly distributed in range of 30 - 40 μm, and that of 60 dph was primarily

De Novo Assembly, Characterization and Comparative Transcriptome Analysis of the Gonads of Jade Perch (Scortum barcoo).

Due to the high meat yield and rich nutritional content, jade perch (Scortum barcoo) has become an important commercial aquaculture species in China. Jade perch has a slow growth rate, taking 3-4 years to reach sexual maturity, and has almost no difference in body size between males and females. However, the study of its gonad development and reproduction regulation is still blank, which limited the yield increase. Herein, the gonad transcriptomes of juvenile males and females of S. barcoo were identified for the first time. A total of 107,060 unigenes were successfully annotated. By comparing

Dietary zinc levels affect growth, appetite, and lipid metabolism of Chinese perch (Siniperca chuatsi).

An 84-day feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary Zn (zinc) on growth performance, food intake, and lipid metabolism of Chinese perch (Siniperca chuatsi). Five isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets with differential Zn contents (67, 100, 149, 230, and 410 mg/kg) were fed to 270 fish (35.47 ± 0.49 g). Results showed that fish growth and food intake increased markedly with the dietary 149 mg/kg Zn levels. Meanwhile, the food intake of 149 mg/kg group was significantly higher than that of other treatment groups after feeding for 8 weeks (P < 0.05). The qRT-PCR results

Thyroid function and immune status in perch (Perca fluviatilis) from lakes contaminated with PFASs or PCBs.

The environment contains a multitude of man-made chemicals, some of which can act as endocrine disruptors (EDCs), while others can be immunotoxic. We evaluated thyroid disruption and immunotoxic effects in wild female perch (Perca fluviatilis) collected from two contaminated areas in Sweden; one site contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and two sites contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), with one reference site included for each area. The hepatic mRNA expression of thyroid receptors α and β, and the thyroid hormone metabolising iodothyronine deiodinases (

Mercury and selenium distribution in key tissues and early life stages of Yellow Perch (Perca flavescens).

Whereas early life stages are usually considered as particularly sensitive to both organic and inorganic contaminants, field studies assessing contaminant bioaccumulation in these stages are scarce. Selenium (Se) is thought to counteract Hg toxic effects when it is found at Se:Hg molar ratios above 1. However, the variation of this ratio in key fish tissues of different early life stages is mostly unknown. The present study therefore aimed to assess Hg and Se content in gravid female tissues (gonads, muscle, liver, gut, and brain) and different life stages (egg masses, newly hatched larvae (NH

An avirulent Micropterus salmoides rhabdovirus vaccine candidate protects Chinese perch against rhabdovirus infection.

In order to develop live vaccine against Siniperca chuatsi rhabdovirus (SCRV) disease, an avirulent virus strain, designed as Micropterus salmoides rhabdovirus Sanshui (MSRV-SS), was selected from six fish rhabdovirus isolates (SCRV-QY、SCRV-SS、SCRV-GM、CMRV-FS、OMBRV-JM、MSRV-SS) by fish challenge assay. When Chinese perch (Siniperca chuatsi) were intraperitoneally injected live virus strain MSRV-SS, they were completely protected from virulent SCRV-GM challenge with a relative percent survival (RPS) of 100% on 18th day post vaccination. Then, the wild type MSRV-SS was purified by plaque clone as

Behavioural effects of psychoactive pharmaceutical exposure on European perch (Perca fluviatilis) in a multi-stressor environment.

With the ability to resist biodegradation and exert therapeutic effects at low concentrations, pharmaceutical contaminants have become environmental stressors for wildlife. One such contaminant is the anxiolytic oxazepam, a psychoactive pharmaceutical that is frequently detected in surface waters globally. Despite growing interest in understanding how wildlife respond to anxiolytics, synergistic effects of pharmaceuticals and other abiotic (e.g. temperature) and biotic (e.g. predation risk) stressors remain unclear. Here, using a multi-stressor approach, we investigated effects of 7-day oxazep

Influence of Triaenophorus nodulosus plerocercoids (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) on the occurrence of intestinal helminths in the perch (Perca fluviatilis).

Concurrent infections of helminths in vertebrates are widespread and may demonstrate synergistic, antagonistic or negligible levels of interactions between species that share a common site. However, indirect interactions between species that occur in different organs of a host are poorly documented, particularly in fish. Plerocercoids of Triaenophorus nodulosus are common liver infections of European perch (Perca fluviatilis). These larval cestodes cause extensive liver damage, resulting in systemic pathologies that include alteration of the physiochemical environment of the intestine. Perch h

Perching mate-locating strategy in Paysandisia archon (Lepidoptera: Castniidae): behavioral and morpho-physiological investigations.

We studied Paysandisia archon (Burmeister) (Lepidoptera: Castniidae: Castniinae) courtship behavior to provide a detailed qualitative and quantitative description of male and female behaviors. Moreover, to investigate the role of antennal olfaction and visual stimuli in mate-recognition, bioassays with antennectomized adults and dummies were performed. To assess the presence of a pheromone gland in the ovipositor, morphological (using light and scanning electron microscopic techniques), electrophysiological, and chemical investigations were carried out. We observed perching mate-locating behav

Molecular cloning, expression and functional analysis of TNF13b (BAFF) in Japanese sea perch, Lateolabrax japonicus.

Members of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family play key roles in the regulation of inflammation, immune responses and tissue homeostasis. Here we describe the identification of the Japanese sea perch (Lateolabrax japonicus) homologue of mammalian B cell activating factor of the TNF family (BAFF/BLyS) (designated LjBAFF). The cDNA contains an open reading frame (ORF) of 783 nucleotides that are translated into a predicted 260 amino acid protein. Like most known BAFFs, Japanese sea perch BAFF contains three cysteine residues (Cys(123), Cys(218) and Cys(232)) which are conserved in the aligned

Pan-Continental Genomic Analysis of Eurasian Perch Uncovers Global Diversity Hotspots and Postglacial Recolonization Patterns.

The contemporary distribution of genetic diversity in widespread freshwater species reflects a complex interplay between historical processes and recent demographic events. We investigated the postglacial recolonization history of the Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) across its native range spanning Europe and Western Siberia, aiming to understand how historical and recent demographic processes have shaped contemporary genetic diversity in a widespread freshwater species. Using an integrative genomic approach, we combined whole mitochondrial genome resequencing with nuclear SNP-array geno

Protective effects of inactivated SPIV vaccine in sea perch (Lateolabrax japonicas) by intraperitoneal injection and immersion immunization.

Sea perch is one of the most important fish species farmed in China. However, the frequent outbreak of viral diseases induced by sea perch iridovirus (SPIV) always caused high mortality and heavy economic losses in sea perch aquaculture. Up to now, no effective countermeasures against SPIV infection have been established. Here, the inactivated SPIV combined with ISA 763B VG (SPIV/763B) or IMS 1312 VG (SPIV/1312) were used for injection and immersion immunization, respectively. The potential immunoprotective effects of vaccines against SPIV infection were evaluated after the safety test of vacc

Biological and anthropogenic influences on macrophage aggregates in white perch Morone americana from Chesapeake Bay, USA.

The response of macrophage aggregates in fish to a variety of environmental stressors has been useful as a biomarker of exposure to habitat degradation. Total volume of macrophage aggregates (MAV) was estimated in the liver and spleen of white perch Morone americana from Chesapeake Bay using stereological approaches. Hepatic and splenic MAV were compared between fish populations from the rural Choptank River (n = 122) and the highly urbanized Severn River (n = 131). Hepatic and splenic MAV increased with fish age, were greater in females from the Severn River only, and were significantly great

Reproductive health of yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from a biological mercury hotspot in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Methylmercury (MeHg) exposure is known to adversely affect the reproductive health of laboratory fish, but its impacts on the sexual development of wild fishes are not well studied. Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site (KNPNHS) region of Nova Scotia, Canada, has been identified as a biological mercury (Hg) hotspot. To determine whether Hg was adversely affecting the reproductive health of wild yellow perch (Perca flavescens), sexually mature male and female perch were collected from 12 lakes within KNPNHS (mean muscle total Hg: 0.28-0.54 μg/g ww).
