Multiple studies have shown that performance on behavioral decision-making tasks, such as the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), is influenced by external factors, such as mood. However, the research regarding the influence of worry is mixed, and no research has examined the effect of math or test anxiety on these tasks. The present study investigated the effects of anxiety (including math anxiety) and math performance on the IGT and BART in a sample of 137 undergraduate students. Math performance and worry were not correlated with performance on the IGT, and no va

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined social anxiety symptoms during online social interactions. We examined self-report symptoms in individuals with elevated social anxiety in online interactions in the presence/absence of virtual audience images and the presence/absence of live videos of the self.
METHOD: Participants with elevated social anxiety who were not treatment-seeking gave a short impromptu talk via an online social communication platform. Participants were randomised to present with their camera on or off, and to audience images that were visible or not. We recorded participants'

Social cognition impairments may be associated with poor functional outcomes, symptoms, and disability in social anxiety disorder (SAD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This meta-analysis aims to determine if emotion recognition and theory of mind (ToM) are impaired in SAD or GAD compared to healthy controls. A systematic review was conducted in electronic databases (PubMed, PsycNet, and Web of Science) to retrieve studies assessing emotion recognition and/or ToM in patients with SAD or GAD, compared to healthy controls, up to March 2022. Meta-analyses using random-effects models were c

Music performance anxiety (MPA) has traditionally been conceptualized as a predominantly psychological phenomenon, with limited attention paid to musicians' embodied physical experiences. The present study examined whether musculoskeletal pain is robustly associated with MPA and whether performance-related variables are statistically indirectly associated with MPA through musculoskeletal pain. Using cross-sectional survey data from a large sample of musicians (N = 343), we assessed associations between recent musculoskeletal pain, MPA, musical activity time, and performance-related stress, whi

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety influences working memory performance, but the effects on clinical neuropsychological assessments of working memory are not well known.
METHODS: We examined the effect of anxiety, induced using the 7.5% carbon dioxide model of anxiety on standardized clinical neuropsychological tests of working memory and executive function in a single-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, crossover within-subjects design.
RESULTS: The CO2-challenge reduced spatial working memory performance and verbal working memory performance accuracy when task demands were high. The CO2-challenge incr

Music performance anxiety (MPA) manifests itself at mental, physiological, and behavioral levels. The present study investigated how the experience of the three levels of symptoms changes over time, and how musicians cope with these temporal changes in MPA symptoms. To this end, we conducted a questionnaire survey in which 38 student musicians freely commented on their experiences of mental and physical changes, as well as their coping strategies for these changes. This was examined during five different time periods around public performance, extending from the beginning of the preparation fo

OBJECTIVE: By comparing the differences in pre-competition state anxiety, inter-competition heart rate variability (HRV), and shooting performance of young athletes of different grades, and revealing the correlation between these variables, it provides a potential basis for improving athletes' shooting performance.
METHODS: A total of 45 adolescent shooters were selected in Chongqing, China, and completed 40 effective shots at self-pace in real shooting scenes. The pre-competition state anxiety, inter-competition HRV, and shooting performance of the athletes were monitored and evaluated respe

Music performance anxiety (MPA) is a prevalent psychological phenomenon affecting musicians at all levels. While prior research has established that solo performance contexts typically elicit higher anxiety than ensemble settings, less attention has been paid to variations in exposure levels within orchestra environments. This cross-sectional study examined the association between exposure level and MPA among wind instrumentalists in orchestra settings, investigating the mediating role of social anxiety and the moderating role of performance experience. A total of 152 wind instrumentalists wer

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping students' expectations about learning, employability, and professional identity, but AI-related psychological responses may differ across disciplines. This cross-sectional study examined how broad AI anxiety and a vocal-performance-specific replacement appraisal were associated with employment anxiety among 392 vocal music students and early-career graduates in China. AI anxiety was assessed with a 14-item subset derived from the Chinese Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale; vocal-performance replacement perception was assessed with a four-item contex

BACKGROUND: Music performance anxiety (MPA), a common situational anxiety subtype, impairs motor execution and stress response in high-stakes violin learning, a context with rigorous technical and evaluative demands. This cross-sectional non-interventional human subject research strictly followed standardized ethical review protocols.
OBJECTIVES: This study explored the correlations of growth mindset (GM, cognitive) and psychological flexibility (PF, emotional regulatory) with MPA, examining PF's moderating effect and gender differences in their anxiety-mitigating pathways.
METHODS: A cross-

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have focused on medical students and residents' mental health impact on medical residency selection (MRS) performance. The authors evaluated the association of performance in MRS with depressive and anxiety symptoms and with a reported psychiatric diagnosis (rPD).
METHODS: The authors enrolled candidates after the second round of MRS examinations at a Brazilian Medical School. Performance was assessed by final grade. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed by the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self-Report (QIDS-SR) and the State-Trait Anxiety Invento

Regional anaesthesia is a gold standard in upper limb orthopaedic surgery. Carried out on an awake patient, it can be a source of anxiety. In recent years, hypnotic techniques have been proposed in the management of perioperative anxiety. Among them, virtual reality is increasingly used as a distraction tool during anxious or painful actions despite the scarcity of proof of its benefit in the literature. Before implementing the systematic use of virtual reality when performing regional anaesthesia in our institution, we designed a study hypothesizing that the use of a virtual reality headset w

Objective: This study evaluated the functional effects of severe mental health symptoms on speed of academic performance to assist clinicians and educators in determining whether extra time accommodations are evidence-based for students with such diagnoses. Method: Using archival data from 1476 post-secondary students, we examined the performance of students with existing mental health diagnoses who were also reporting extremely high levels of symptoms. Their performance on timed academic achievement and cognitive processing measures was compared with performance of students with learning disa

BACKGROUND: Screening instruments for mental disorders need to be short, engaging, and valid. Current screening instruments are usually questionnaire-based and may be opaque to the user. A prototype approach where individuals identify with a description of an individual with typical symptoms of depression, anxiety, social phobia or panic may be a shorter, faster and more acceptable method for screening. The aim of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of four new prototype screeners for predicting depression and anxiety disorders and to compare their performance with existing scales.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is often treated as a discrete diagnostic entity that represents a naturally occurring class, though empirical evidence largely supports a dimensional conceptualization of social fears. Further, the inclusion of a "performance only" specifier in the DSM-5 implies that individuals who experience intense social anxiety exclusively in performance situations are distinct from those with broader social fears. The purpose of the present research was to examine the latent structure of SAD and the DSM-5 "performance only" specifier in a large nonclinical sample (n = 2019)

The present research examines whether forming implementation intentions can help people with social anxiety to control their attention and make more realistic appraisals of their performance. In Experiment 1, socially anxious participants (relative to less anxious participants) exhibited an attentional bias toward social threat words in a Visual Dot Probe task. However, socially anxious participants who formed implementation intentions designed to control attention did not exhibit this bias. Using a spatial cuing task, Experiment 2 showed that forming implementation intentions also promoted ra

This study investigated the joint influence of trait social anxiety and evaluative threat on psychological and cardiovascular responses to active coping situations. Fifty-two normotensive female students characterized as either high or low in trait social anxiety performed a mental arithmetic task and a speech task requiring persuasive behavior in a context of high or low evaluative threat. Trait social anxiety exerted a substantial influence on cardiovascular reactivity. High socially anxious individuals overall exhibited greater heart rate reactivity. For systolic and diastolic blood pressur
