Biogenic amines in the nervous system of the cockroach, Periplaneta americana following envenomation by the jewel wasp, Ampulex compressa.

The emerald jewel wasp, Ampulex compressa, exploits the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, as a host for its progeny. The wasp subdues the host by stinging directly into the brain and subesophageal ganglion, inducing long-term hypokinesia. The hypokinesic host lacks normal escape behavior and motivation to walk, making it easy for subjugation by the wasp. The mechanism underlying hypokinesia induction is not known, but depletion of monoamines induces behavior resembling venom-induced hypokinesia. To test whether amine depletion occurs in stung animals, we used high-performance liquid c

Antagonistic Activity of Bacteria Isolated from the Periplaneta americana L. Gut against Some Multidrug-Resistant Human Pathogens.

The insect gut is home to a wide range of microorganisms, including several bacterial species. Such bacterial symbionts provide various benefits to their insect hosts. One of such services is providing metabolites that resist infections. Little data are available about gut-inhabiting bacteria for several insect groups. Through the present work, the gut bacteria associated with the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana L.) were isolated, identified, and studied for their potential antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) human pathogens. The cockroaches were collected from t

Development and Morphometrics of the Turkestan Cockroach (Periplaneta lateralis) Under Solitary and Cohort Rearing at 25 and 30 °C.

The Turkestan cockroach, Periplaneta lateralis (Walker), is an invasive peridomestic pest expanding across southwestern U.S. habitats, where it has been reported to replace the Oriental cockroach, Blatta orientalis L. Life-history advantages may contribute to this expansion, but its developmental parameters remain poorly characterized. We measured development at 25 and 30 °C under solitary rearing, solitary rearing with photographic monitoring, and cohort rearing. Developmental time was significantly shorter under cohort than solitary rearing. Solitary-reared males and females required 219.8 ±

Long-term exposure to extreme illumination regimes alters behavioral responses to light in the cockroach, Periplaneta americana L.

The natural lighting conditions vary depending on latitude, niche, and time of day, and animals are evolutionarily adapted to them. Artificial lighting, along with global warming, drives population ranges toward high latitudes, which creates fast-changing environments for the biota. The American cockroach Periplaneta americana L. is a synanthropic species with a nocturnal lifestyle, rarely exposed to light. Three-month-long exposure to constant light or constant darkness compared to the control 12:12 h day and night cycle, causes behavioral changes explained by two main factors: adaptation of
